Does anyone know if the o-rings provided by Planet Vape are working on the new Solos?

Two friends just purchased the new Solo and I sent them an o-ring each, but they are having issues installing them.

One if them can't get the top of the Solo back on, while the other one got the top back on, but the o-ring doesn't seem to be doing it's job- his stems/GonG are still very loose.

Funny you mention this, I just received a Planet Vape stem with free bonus o-ring today and also happen to have the new solo. To me it seems to fit fine, as far as i'm aware the top can't be screwed completely on but that's how it is for everyone, my gong is not overly tight however it is a bit tighter with the o-ring.

But I was actually going to ask where does everyone hold their solo when using it with the gong?
I tend to hold it below the little grips on the gong when I pull it out.

Also OF you mentioned getting that the caps "must be fitted" how does this work exactly? I just followed the instructions that came with planetvape, seemed pretty straight forward to me.

Maybe someone in this thread can confirm but it seems like the newer designed solos (the ones I have seen and based on reports in this thread) all have thicker caps.

You guys should try the thin o-rings from PV. If the newer designs all have thicker cap, then people can probably just request the thinner o-ring when ordering from PV

My (old) Solo allows me to place the o-ring and close the top cap all the way; unfortunately some weeks ago I noticed that the top left screw in the screw plate has cracked the corner :(

ninja edit: if you want to screw the cap all the way down place the o-ring on some tape and run it over sandpaper to reduce thickness!

Do you think it'd work well if I sandpapered down an o-ring?

Yes, they fit/work the same. At least mine does. Same as before, you can't just bung one in willy nilly and expect good results. They must be fitted. My new one has a thick cap, so like all prior units with thick tops you cannot screw the cap on tight without causing problems with stem fit and breaking the tabs on the bottom. I think it's a safe assumption theirs are the same?

Yes, their Solos must have the thicker caps. The friend who screwed his cap most of the way back on (but not all the way) said that the o-ring is working properly. However, the friend that screwed the cap back all the way back on (after a struggle) said that the o-ring had shifted and was no longer centered. He's a lurker here, so I've pointed him towards this part of the thread. Hopefully, no tabs have broken. He says his Solo is working really well, so that's good. I was surprised by how fast his new Solo became very loose without the o-ring - within one day he was having to hold onto the GonG while removing it from his water tool for fear of it detatching from the Solo.

Those PV instructions still don't mention that it's much easier to insert the o-ring while the stem is inserted. ie. cap off, stem in, o-ring on, cap on. In fact, the few times I did try to do it using PV's method (as a test), the o-ring kept shifting as I screwed the top back on.

PV have thinner o-rings for the Solo? This is news to me! Thanks! *just found them

Do you mean the screw plate inside the Solo (if there is such a thing??) or the screw plate on the bottom of the Solo? The bottom of my (old) Solo has a tiny crack in the corner, right next to the screw. I wasn't sure if this was because of the o-ring or just because the metal between the screw and the edge of the Solo is really, really thin.

I love ninjas.

Actually they do mention that on the o-rings description :
PlanetVape said:
Just remove the top screw on cap from the Solo, center the O-ring over the heater port, put a straight stem in the Solo to hold the O-ring centered and screw the Solo top cap back on while allowing the stem to keep the O-ring centered. Do not overtighten.

Greetings Solo fans!

Sorry to change the subject but I'm heavily considering purchasing an Arizer Solo from Vapefiend. A bit of a weird question, but has anyone found any practical advantages between using a black or silver coloured model?

i.e. Black might be a bit more stealthy or silver makes it easier to spot spilt avb/herb in a dimly lit room? Maybe the paint flecks off I don't know?

I know it's an odd one but hope you can advise.

Cheers! :science:

How much did you sand paper yours down? My top still won't fit :( Sigh..
I didn't need to sand mine down, actually. @OF might be of help...

I think much (at least some) of the problems come from folks not understanding what's the idea here.

The idea is to keep the stem from flopping around, not to make it as tight as you might want. It's not to keep the stem from falling out if inverted (the maker considers this the right thing to happen here), let alone 'tight enough so you can lift the Solo with it' as some seem looking for. The stem is not the handle (same as with DV come to think on it).

The goal is two fold. First, the ring grips the stem. It has to do this 'outside', that is on it's own. Mostly a function of the material (you need traction, so it wants to be soft) and the correct size (in the ID). The grip (outside the Solo) has to be tight enough so the ring doesn't slip.

Second, the cap has to grip the ring firmly enough so it doesn't turn, but no more. You don't want it compressing the ring at all since this makes insetting the stem harder (the ring shifts with no stem) and puts strain on the screw tabs on the bottom that was never intended. We discussed this a fair bit in the past, I think the general opinion is you want at most 1/4 a turn on the cap past the point if first makes contact wtih the ring. No more. You need to be careful here, if the top 'wants to screw on more' either stop it (I used some tape on the threads on one) or sand it thinner. You can also carefully shave it down some with a razor blade. I've done both and recommend sanding. I ended up with two flats, one top the other bottom, maybe 1/4 the minor diameter of the ring? How much you might need depends on your Solo, simply copying what I or anyone else did blindly isn't going to cut it.

Correctly fitted how you assemble it shouldn't matter since the ring isn't supposed to be that tightly clamped. I've used my finger tip (always handy.....) to center them with success.

If you're compressing the ring at all with the cap and 'tightening it up' still more you've gone too far. That's not what the modification is intended to do.

misanthrope I really do think it's just personal preference I can't see a real benefit to my Black solo other then I like it better then silver and don't understand How someone would prefer silver even though a Ol' GF of mine has one and wouldn't buy a black she says.

Whatever color the wife desires should be your answer!

Words to live by indeed. "Whatever you prefer" is an important survival reflex for modern guys to develop I think. Fixes lots of problems even before they happen.

In this case it opens up the 'hey, maybe we'd like the black one better?' later on as well..... Never hurts to have a plan for the future you know.

Thanks. I haven't tried to use it while charging yet. I should do that to see if it works. :)

That's the definitive test for sure.

OTOH if you bought a new Solo through a normal dealer in the last few months and it's not the new model I think you'll be the first/only one to do so? It seems the volume of sales is so high that all the older style ones were 'flushed out' months ago.

Not that we have any choice in the matter, of course. In fact, to be honest, I'd personally prefer the older version I think. I'm still using my new model, but I think soon it's going to get it's screws put back in (I'm leaving them out right now to make it easier to get inside) and put away.

BTW, on the cracked tabs issue? My new one came with one of them cracked for me (saves me the trouble I guess?), but in a strange way. The crack runs 2/3 of the way up the baseplate to the large hole nearest the charge port....... I saw the crack (or at least a 'funny line') on the bottom before charging, testing or touching the screws. It was even easier to see on the inside. Works fine, of course.

Hey all...new Solo owner here. Getting the feel for this vape and really liking it. One flaw is the 12-minute shut-off. I typically vape alone and will milk a stem for upwards of 30-40 minutes, starting at 4 and working my way to 6. Apparently it doesn't matter if I change the heat settings during that 12 minutes; it's still going to time out? Not a huge problem, but there has been a couple times when I'm playing music and don't hear the beep to let me know the unit has timed out. I don't suppose anybody has discovered a way around this short of keeping a sharp eye/ear on the unit to reset it manually when it times out?

I'll do a test this afternoon after my Orthopedic surgeon appointment. I'll definitely report back and let everyone know if it worked.

Yes, the timer is independent of changes, same thing happens in PA mode (for the older ones). If you wait 5 minutes to start your session you get a seven minute session. We've talked about this a fair bit I think.

I'm not sure we've ever discussed 'dealing with it'? The obvious one (if it's not giving vapor as expected, gone dark.....) not withstanding you can do what I do when 'shifting gears': Shut it off and restart. That only takes a few extra seconds and resets the timer. I get how running it until it stops you becomes a habit and all, but you can expand the 12 minutes and can actually shut it off when you've had enough......abstract as that concept is to some?

Sounds good to me, good luck on both.

However, not to second guess you, but you might be missing an opportunity here? Bring it along and test it there? IMO it'd be interesting to get the Doctor's opinion (a surgeon no less!)..........
