Big fan of Subscape - we even booked him a couple of times for dubstep/dnb nights over the last few years.

Personally, like others here who have been listening to dubstep for at least 3 years now, I think people like Skrillex ruined it. He may not have been the first by a long shot but he greatly contributed to that ever-growing penchant for overly-wobbly wank-step/bro-step whatever you want to call it now.

Dirty tunes used to hold more attraction when there weren't so many around and didn't sound like they are just trying so, so hard to be grimy - see Rusko's stuff from like 2008, or even Subscape's stuff from around 2009, when this style was just reaching past its peak. Nowadays, I can only really listen to the more chilled out stuff.

Mala and Phaeleh have been great over the last couple of years, and people like Ramadanman and Pangaea have been taking the scene beyond that wobbly-wanky-shite to something that's been called 'future-garage.'

Any dubstep, or for that matter any drum-n-bass / bass-heavy electronic music, that you can listen to on your laptop speakers and still think you're hearing most of the song, doesn't deserve to be called dubstep at all. Sub bass > annoying distorted synths anyday in my book

Agree with what your saying there dude...I started getting into dubstep late 2008 and mixed it for quite a while as well...Until about 12 months ago I sought out the filthiest dirtiest grime filled tracks I could then it all started getting HEAPS of attention (especially by anyone looking to make a commercial name for themselves)...I still love dirty heavy dubstep if its done well...Lots of chunky sub bass instead of half arsed synths, no cheezy leads melodies or fucking vocals, and something with a bit of originality...Lately I find myself listening to a lot glitched out chill or laid back dubstep with lots of atmosphere...It also doesn't help that every teenie bopper 18 or under LOVES the shit and you cant even go to a decent gig anymore without hanging with a bunch of chomped out teenagers on 50 million pills...But as long as my favorite producers can still get enough of the lime light to produce some intelligent music for a crowd with some taste I'm happy :p

Can't get inti dubstep for some reason. It doesn't even sound melodic or harmonious. To me it just sounds like a bunch of disorganized noise. Im a big trance/house head and I can appreciate most electronic music except this. It also seems like all these little pilled out kids love this shit. Maybe someone can enlighten me but I've heard a bunch of dubstep and I just can't dig it.

I'm mostly on the same page. I don't like electronic like I used to back when I was say in my 2nd year of college. A lot of dubstep just has a cheap feel to it and seems like anyone could make it. Maybe that's just cause I don't like it as much as other people, so I don't understand it as much, but I'm still into music and can appreciate well produced tracks even if I don't care for the music.

Try listening to some Porter Robinson to see if that can bridge the gap a bit. I have heard a few of his songs and find the production value better than some of the other stuff I hear sometimes, and he also seems more in tune with what you already like. The kid is only 19 which I find interesting.

This is the way all primarily electronic music sounds to me, ever since like 1979 at the very latest.

Aw, there are some good tunes to be found out there. I do think that maybe 99.9 percent of modern electronic music has no soul, and it doesn't help that everyone is trying to make it now. I think the large influx of garbage music recently has alot to do with modern sound production tools that have become so easy to use. You have to put in a lot of time and effort to get good original sound out of the gear but most producers only want to make a buck off their next big hit.

Agreed mate. Some friends of mine produce drum-n-bass, some even with a few releases on vinyl and mp3, and they always talk about the complexity necessary in making a good dnb tune. Layer upon layer of sub bass and snare kicks etc - all takes a long time to put together just right.

A lot of dubstep tunes, on the other hand, apparently take about 30 minutes to make... shit even Benga made his name by using the basic included samples that came free with Logic or whatever he was using.

Also, and I suppose this has been going on in other electronic genres for a while now - but dubstep definitely made it more prominent - it pisses me off when DJs just hide behind their MACs for the entire gig, clicking away on Serato etc.
As someone who used to mix a little bit, and as someone who still listens to a lot of drum-n-bass, it always has been and always will be about the vinyl for me. The skill and actual physical contact involved in vinyl decks is just so much more appealing and admirable than some guy using his mouse-pad to ensure both tunes are perfectly beat-matched, barely even needing his headphones at all.

While other genres do still use vinyl, especially if the DJ is bit of a purist, it's pretty much only dnb that's holding the line, and ever since Technics stopped making turntables the writing has well and truly been on the wall.

great bbm goin.
i enjoy progressive a lot. and njoy most electro genres. make any of them progressive and i like them more. :)

while i like skrillex, i agree on the dubstep scene blowing up because of it. and now everyone thinks they need to do it.
i understand evolving n all, but don't agree on changing just because its what the kids want, which i feel some groups are doing..

I take it you enjoy the bass on this track?

I love this song though, it's brooding but sweet at the same time.

great bbm goin.

It's a very mellow bbm but enough to get my heart going.

I don't consider 38 years of age that old, but nevertheless I didn't really know what dub step was. Checked out most of the links posted here the other day during a nightly vaping session and I really enjoyed it, keep on posting these please. I think we just called it trance back then btw.

Felt like re-living some of the tunes that made me first love dubstep years ago, before I stopped regularly following it after the course it has taken over the last year or two.

Rusko - Jahova: http://youtu.be/fJxbEwt7NhE?hd=1

As the top comment says - 'quite possibly the best dubstep tune ever made.'
Sounds simple compared to more recent stuff but it's still heavy as fuck on a proper speaker system and with genuine sub-bass rather than annoying synths splattered all over the place. Made back in 2007 when dubstep still had a lot of 'dub' in it!

Here's one of my favourite old grimey tunes as well.

Chase & Status - Mad House (instrumental): http://youtu.be/7jlm5m_ZcGY?hd=1

Quite simply an enormous tune. Enough said!

Both Rusko and Chase & Status have been slight victims of their popularity in the last year or so but they're still amazing producers at the end of the day.

Finally a very good, but still very dirty, mix from Plastician back in 2009: http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtop...postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=plastician

Enjoy!
