Debt Ceiling Talk by Obama - Anyone Gonna Do What He Asked Us to Do?

"This isn't a Republican or Democrat thing."

How can you possibly square that with what I quoted in my post?

If you honestly weren't saying what I've quoted right here my apologies. And my additional apologies regardless for holding you accountable for this nonsense; as you're not American you can't share in the shame I'm afraid.

Still I think if you take a look at your original post and then your subsequent efforts I don't know how you can't acknowledge that your argument is shifting under pressure.

Next election, I'd like to make a write in candidate, "None of the Above!"

I've made my feelings know to the appropriate people, but they really couldn't give a rats ass about hurting people by not paying military pay. I wish the military could go on strike! Hurting the elderly and disabled by not paying them. They only care about helping themselves, and they never really care what the American people have to say. If they say they do, they are lying.

@Vicki; I don't know how this thing is going to swing out, but yeah, disabled, eldelry and other fixed income individuals could get very hard by this debt ceiling/budget/tax/entitlement kerfluffle. Because I rely so heavily on the Canadian health care system, I shudder at Medicare/aid getting hit in the US.

And you can bet the politicians will get paid.....

I'll stay out of the political discussions on this site, that's for sure. Though I would suggest many of you venture outside the Puffington Post, DU, Daily KOS and MSDNC. As I always say... I used to be a liberal democrat, then I grew up.

So you think that now, for the first time ever in American history we should NOT raise the debt ceiling? I mean, it was raised 7 time during the W. Bush administration and he certainly wasn't a liberal. Nor would I call him grown up but that's another discussion.

Have you guys heard what John McCain said on the floor about the newly elected freshman teabaggers? He calls them Hobbits! He even goes so far as to call out the GOP's horrible plan to regain power by making America weak so Obama will fail. He has been around to know this is just unprecedented and outrageous.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xt5OE3_3zvM is C-SPAN a liberal source too? Because John McCain certainly isn't.. or is this just a common sense issue?

I hear a lot of older folks saying how they used to be liberal until they "grew up."

Personally, I struggle to maintain my liberal leanings due to a large dose of internal skepticism and having studied History for many years (try and look at the History of humanity and NOT get depressed!), but I can honestly say I hope I hold on to them for as long as I live.
Liberals have always been the forward thinkers in every government (see 17th Century England, the direct precursor for many of the fine ideas espoused after the American War of Independence - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levellers ), conservatives usually try to maintain the status quo or harp on about some bygone golden age when everything was just hunky-dory! (See the abolition of slavery)

Anyway the only reason I came into this thread was to post this rather funny story that the BBC is reporting:
'Apple holding more cash than USA: Apple now has more cash to spend than the United States government' - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14340470

Quite an inappropriate comparison perhaps, but I thought it was a tad hilarious nonetheless. :D
(Edit: Apologies if the Americans among us don't find it so amusing... We have plenty of silly shit to be laughed at for on this side of the pond too!)

You won't hear that from me and I'm the oldest active member here.

No, my argument hasn't budged. I see what's wrong, you've misunderstood my statement. You interpreted it to be a reference to the current debt ceiling fiasco, but I meant it as a statement about the behaviour of politicians. Sorry for the confusion.

I challenge any "reformed" liberal to follow the news from the Left for two months, while at the same time following their normal network television news, and try to square difference afterwards. No matter how, "frothing at the mouth," the Left is, the words coming out of their mouths are researched and true, for the most part. How they at times seem like Chicken Little doesn't change the fact that we are being led around by the noses by network television, plain and simple.

It's no wonder the House GOP tea-partiers have lost their way, from nobly trying to inject some fiscal responsibility to becoming the hench-men and women of the Far Right.

I've heard they won't default right away, even if they don't take extreme measures, they have nine months of funding available, and up to a year and a half to actually default, so I've been warey of the Democrats statements, as far as they seem to also be taking advantage of the story with their spin.

Pakalolo, I really got a laugh when you wrote, "they even feel obliged to," very funny, sir.
