Discontinued Purple-Days Vaporizer

after a couple of weeks of research, i'm ready to pull the trigger on my first vaporizer and have decided on the pd for reasons of quality, craftsmanship, durability, aesthetics, sustainability and reports of efficiency.

i was sad to see that tom no longer ships himself. does anyone have any idea when vapenow will be taking orders?

Hi there, slip. Welcome to the forum.

They will put the buy button up when the have them. We will be shipping units once a week as they are finished. No set day, and impossible to predict an ETA with the Postal folks.

By the time you hear about it via the forum, they're likely to be sold out again. In fact, if someone posts (every week?) 'Vapenow has PDs in stock!', we're likely to just delete the post. We don't want the thread filled with posts about product availibility. The policy/procedure has been stated, and we'll have enough to deal with informing new members who have jumped into the thread recently and missed the announcement. Just ordered my Purple Days internationally, been in contact with Pam/Tom for a few weeks while all the changes have been going though.

I can't wait! I pretty much ordered a SSV at the same time, with these 2 vapes I'll be unstoppable.

While 7th floor seems like a great company, it feels like talking to a brick wall in terms of customer service.

For the PD, all emails have been answered from either Tom or Pam close to instantly (all the same day) and all my questions have been answered thoroughly.

Tried finding a local power adapter, but they were all out. It was that specific 12VDC 1A which didnt exist. On my way home, stopped by a music shop, and to my luck, he pulled a boxed adapter that read exactly what I needed, and the 2.1x5.5 dimensions were even perfect, told me it was used on the yamaha keyboards, and I can have it. Thing is back working like a beast. Thanks Pam and Tom!

A note on power supplies. We recommend a 1000mA or 1 Amp supply. The unit draws about 700mA , so we say 1A as a nice round figure with adequate 'headroom', but 900mA will work, and 1200mA and 1500mA. It doesn't have to be exactly 1A.

I went searching around for a power supply today (want to be ready), but the most I found was 12V DC @ 0.7A.

I have zero understanding of power, is there any vaporizing temperature difference between the ratings (900/1000/1200/1500)? Or once you supply adequate (above 700) power it's at a constant temperature?

Hi Chubba, Don't try running it on .7A. That is the actual draw and you xhould use a power supply with a bit more 'room' than required by the device.

Simplest way I can think to explain. Think of the power supply Amp rating like a fuse or breaker rating. You wouldn't want a device drawing 15 amps on a circuit with a 15 amp breaker. So you use a circuit with a higher rating such as 20 amps. While I know of a fellow using a 900mA supply it's not what we suggest (mostly out of the simplicity of the number and availability of the 1A supplies).

There will be no temperature difference between a 12V rated at 1000mA and one rated at 1500mA. Temperature is controlled by voltage and resistance. Since resistance is set, voltage controls. Back to the breaker analogy ,plugging a toaster into a 20 Amp circuit will not make darker toast than a 15 Amp circuit, the voltage and resistance remain the same. Only the capacity of the circuits have changed.

That explains why my multi voltage regulated DC adapter was working. The only problem is that, with more voltage, the current seemed to decrease. Like this nifty adapter can pull a 1.5A only if 3V is chosen, and goes down to 12V DC current giving out 0.7A, which is 700mA. Even at 12V, the unit was pretty hot and working just fine. But I don't really know why I am having like a placebo thinking I'm pulling out thicker vape with 1 whole amp.

While the power supply may be 'rated' at 700mA on 12V possibly it was performing under that rating? I used an under rated supply a couple of weeks ago. We were moving and I was setting up Pammy's keyboard. I forget the specs but I had a power supply by the same mfg, same voltage, but way under-rated. Keyboard worked, but the supply got hot as hell. Not a good idea. Found the right supply, I had even tied a label on it, errr. Keyboard fine, under rated supply not tested yet.

Get the 1A supply as we suggest to avoid problems. It's part of why we use a common voltage and plug. The 1A part is usually pretty easy too.

So will all of the PDs vapenow receives next week not have the stamp on the bottom?

The Purple-Days has not had a stamp on the bottom (underside) for quite a while.

VapeNow will be getting the Original Purple-Days with a dark purple leather bottom (no stamped url) and our trademark 'purple sun' logo wood-burned, opposite the power jack, by Pammy. They will also be receiving a few of our Paisley-Days. Same American Cherry hardwood body but no wood-burned logo and a very deep brown leather bottom with Paisley embossing.

hey tom, what ever happened to that batch of pink ivory pd's that you made? those were my favorite.

Pink Ivory was extremely dense. About like Ebony. Very heavy in the hand, not so comfortable. The denser woods also transmit too much heat and don't provide the insulation values we need to sustain the temperature most people want and expect. Lower temps, lighter vapor, too heavy, difficult to work, non-sustainable wood, very expensive too. I think there is one lurking in a box somewhere. Not for sale though, just doesn't come up to our requirements. Had a very interesting odor when worked, but none after finishing.Neato for pool cue wood.

Tom, did your new lathe produce a PD that's a bit smaller than the originals circumference wise, or do they just vary a bit unit to unit?

Same lathe. Just replaced a busted part.

Every one (PD) is just a bit different. I have a set of calipers and can turn a pretty consistent dowel with them. Do it pretty often to fill that bottom 2" hole (the plug). But find turning a perfect cylinder the same size and shape a bit boring.

Even tried to do that a bit at first (the very beginning of prototyping). Precisely x diameter. Turned sticks several PDs long even. Chopped to length after. Then they came off the lathe to be shaped on the top by a router (3/8" round-over bit) then back on the lathe to sand and refine the shape a bit. very uniform, precisely boring.

If you look at furniture legs (mostly) a slight taper is pleasing, so the hardness of a routered shape on a straight cylinder made for a less appealing look.

Each PD is cut to length before going on the lathe (as both your units were and all have been for a very long while). Each block then is shaped on the lathe. Roughing gouge first to a cylinder (with a slight taper) the then an oval skew chisel to do the top round over and planing of the body. At that point it's pretty close, a sanding belt (or two) in hand refines the shape while it is spinning. That's about it. Each one is eye-balled. Some thinner, some more taper, some more round over. Then, all the other stuff we do, before the leather goes on and final hand sanding is done, that is the final shape refinement.

Yes, hand sanding, first to get the leather flush with the wood then to get the wood-burned logo nice and the last with the fine papers and steel wool before hand rubbed Buzz-Butter and buffing. BTW I own belt and orbital sanders, but they are not used on the PDs.

I just like it this way.Not an assembly line with strick parameters. It's the one area of freedom. Things like wiring and tubing length and such are set in stone (by jigs) for repeatability. Shaping wood is the real fun for a woodworker.

Buttered up my PD last night. Second time in about 2 weeks. Getting much darker and lookin' REALLY nice.

well sad sad day... i was 300 miles away from my purple days, and my roommate got caught smoking... so i lost everything....

I feel for you.

i had all my perif locked up in a safe and told them they needed a warrent to search it, well they got one so i ended up getting a perif charge. fingerprinted and let go. the pd was setting out on the table, and i guess the cops didnt know what it was, just said it smelt like weed so they took it.

now looks like i will be back in line to get a new pd. this one i think my roommate will be buying me since i wasnt even here when he got busted

What a drag. Just out of curiousity why wasn't the window of opportunity seized before they returned with a warrant to move your peripherals out of your place?
