Odor out of window from vape?

Hello all, I just moved into the first floor of an apartment, and since I live with non friendlies, I try to keep the odor to a minimum. I seal off the door and cover the vent, but I also blow the vapor into a bag (water bottle with the bottom cut off, and a trash bag duct taped around the bottom). My window opens out to the street, so I figure I'd leave it wide open and vape and everything would be chill. However, there was one instance where my neighbor walked pass the window and remarked "someone smoking weed?" :uhoh: Do you guys think that with my setup, I'm giving off any detectable amount of odor? It's not too big a deal, but I'd rather avoid any problems. I've read about how people were given eviction notices and so forth, but that was for smoking.

It seems very unlikely that that odor would come from you, unless you were taking huge, high heat, bong rips, of extremely dank kush, which it doesn't sound like you are. If you make a good sploof, you can basically SMOKE inside with little odor, not to mention vape. Or you can run a tube out your window to exhale through, or some combo of that with a sploof and tube. All about ingenuity!

The stinkiest part of vaping can sometimes just be your smelly buds especially if you grind them in there. Actual exhaled vapor would have no smell if exhaled into a sploof, but wouldnt be too smelly anyway. Try and keep the bud jars closed and grind and pack quick and get that put away.

I (respectfully of course) disagree with Phish. I too live in an apartment with people who aren't too herb friendly. When I used to use my SSV or Buddha I would do everything imaginable to get rid of/conceal the odor, but if someone was in the hallway or a few feet away from my door they could smell it. I suggest this: http://smokebuddy.com/ - something that has helped me a great deal. I have taken a huge lungful of vapor and exhale through that and friends couldn't smell a thing. Not sure what vape you use, but if the herb is exposed while you're vaping (for instance like an SSV) the herb will omit a lot of smell becuase you are basically baking it. I suggest you continue leaving a towel under the door, purchase a smoke buddy, and possibly look into an air purifier with a carbon filter.

Agreed. It also depends on which vape you are using at the given time.

While vaping smells a HELLUVA lot less than smoking, it still DOES have a smell. With that said - I can sit in my man cave and hit my Myrtlezap or MFLB all day long and noone in the house is the wiser.

Break out the SSV and I start getting hollered at.

An activated charcoal filter room air purifier will remove most any smell.

it will only smell if someone walks past I think, when I was once vaping on a terrace in the city the friend sitting next to me could also smell it when I blew out a cloud(with my VG)
but as soon as it dissipates I think you're pretty much safe(outside that is, inside the smell could still stay lingering a bit)

Interesting. I think I'll definitely have to invest in a MFLB and an air purifier or smoke buddy. I went cheap and bought an easy vape. Though it works well and I've found the sweet temp spot, from all I've read the MFLB sounds so much better. The insights are much appreciated!

i think a large part is also how big of a session it is. if you sit down and take a couple dozen hits off a half a gram right in a row that smells going to build up. but if you just take a hit or two now and then it shouldnt be enough for anyone but a bloodhound to smell from outside.

but the main thing is going to be temperature. i can use the wdz in the same room as someone without them smelling it, as long as i hold my hits in for a while and dont blow them at the person. But the HA stinks things up more cause i usually am running at a higher temp than what the wdz is set at.

MFLB is stealthy as hell but has the capability of creating a stink because you can scorch the herb if you're not careful and dont use it right (like leaving the battery in too long before hitting or forgetting to pull it, which is less of a problem with the pushout rings) and that WILL stink.

window's prolly better than ceiling fan, in our house i catch hell everytime the central air's on, and i'm breathing it directly up into the bath ceiling fan in a closed WC

i tried breathing tubes with scented drier sheets - didn't really work for more than the first hit,
and currently trying/using carbon fan in bath to pre-filter before exhaust doesn't seem to do it either

the smell just doesn't go away properly until i open a couple of windows, and turn on the ceiling fan

Back in my combustion days, I would use a 12 inch piece of whip tubing (vinyl, polyurethane) to exhale out a barely cracked window. I would place a small piece of wood over the rest of the window opening, making a near airtight seal around the whip-tubing. I successfully used this method for years and would recommend it as an option for exporting smell.

Cleanfiend, when you blew out thru the tube, what about the other smells in the room tho?

there should be a "window-crack pot-exhaust" where you can direct where it's collecting air from with flexible ducting hose

Vapor honestly dissipates very fast. If you are concerned about the smell I would recommend a stealthy vape like the MFLB. I can literally vape right next to someone and they would barely know that I am doing anything.

VWFringe -- I would usually use a bong, and take measures to make sure that no smoke would enter the air. Smoke goes straight from bowl->Bong->Lungs->Whip Tubing->Outside. Think of it as a closed system.

With good shit it always stinks up my room. Most vapes can be used as an aromatherapy device also which is a viable option for you. Otherwise I would try a activated carbon sploof or a spray can of ozone

Tips: Pre-grind your material in the bathroom, make sure fresh bud and ground bud is sealed in airtight containers. I found contact lens containers work well to seal and contain the smell. For my fresh bud I use mason jars.

Then when you load your vape, keep the container open for as short of a time as possible. Then blow the vapor into a shirt, not into the air. This will decrease the odor that is released.

I know these are pretty "common sense" but hope it helps!

when my gf came home yesterday, i had company over and we had a really good vape session going, anyways when she came in she said she could smell it all the way downstairs (we live on the top floor of an old 2 story house.)

so to a trained nose it is still totally detectable. and also ive been vaping purple kush a lot as of recent. really awesome grow and super stinky. i think that is what she is smelling. in the vape though i get a hint of raspberry taste in the back of the throat. it's really lovely pot.

If you're worried about it vape outdoors, or if you have a window and a box fan open the window and put the fan so it's facing outward and then vape. Apparently you're not supposed to be exhaling any vapor and you should hold it in unlike with smoking. Or if your bathroom has a fan in the ceiling just go in there and turn it on and vape in there.

IME smoke from candles and incense lingers a lot longer than vapor does but smoke is heavier and more dense than vapor is.

I don't think that you'd need to use a spoof-a soda bottle with holes burned in it that's stuffed with dryer sheets that you exhale your hits into-like people do with smoking but if it makes you feel more secure go for it. Maybe spray some ozium or lysol, and let the room air out some?

GreenLeaf,
I've lived in many, many weed-unfriendly places (including supervised youth hostels), and before I could afford a vape, too. Never been caught from smell after I started these two:

1) THis concept of a sploof (had to put it in Urban Dictionary!)... it may well work - never heard of it and I imagine it would work well. But... dryer sheets are hardcore not very good for you. Don't be sucking on it. We always found a *damp* teatowel clears up *all* smell instantly. Wad it up neatly, blow smoke/vape through. ZERO smell. You can tell it's picking up more as you get these distinctive lip-shaped tarmarks where you blow it through. These get much darker much faster if the filter (teatowel) is damp. H2O is the secret ingredient. To us, and having never tried a sploof, a damp teatowel is the nuclear option. I and friends smoked up hardcore many times in my tiny room connected to my supervisor's via a two-foot vent and she was bitching at us to keep the noise down. Lovely story. Damp teatowel.

2) Even if you're not smoking next to a window, set up an ordinary pedestal fan to blow directly out (like, right in front of it like an exhaust fan). It seems so obvious and hokey you'd not bother, but experience has taught me this simple expedient is very effective in clearing those lingering odours your damp teatowel somehow missed. It's also very stealth - nobody sees a fan near a window and thinks 'hippies'.

An added extra point is always have some music going (like you wouldn't anyway!). We get so hung up on smell we forget weed smokers make distinctive noises. Bubbling with bongs, giggling, lighters clicking... it all adds up and non-smokers have some kinda radar the rest of us have beaten down with THC.

I've just ordered an iolite and a MFLB as I'm moving into a weed-unfriendly house in the next few days. Vapes, teatowels and fans for me! :)
