Forget mangoes. New cannabis 'enhancer' kanna?

Cannabis-enhancing plant to be marketed worldwide as new drug

South African Bushmen have been chewing kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) for hundreds of years to reduce stress, relieve hunger and elevate their moods. Now there are plans to market the exotic plant worldwide as a new over-the-counter drug, according to PhysOrg.com.

Aside from its potential health benefits and mood-altering qualities, the plant is also well known for its ability to enhance the effects of other psychoactive drugs-- particularly cannabis. Thus, its role as a potentiator for more controversial drugs could lead to road blocks in getting approval by U.S. regulators. The American company working with HGH to distribute the product in the U.S. said it did not know when exactly it could be available for consumers, though they were tentatively planning a product launch sometime in 2011.

Very interesting news.

Anyone have any experience with kanna? Someone from the comments section said it's been available to anyone online for the past 10 years.

^It's available there in multiple forms for relatively cheap.

reading the article, at first I was interested, but afterreading a bit of the article I don't think it will be enjoyable to me:
When it is consumed, users are said to receive a head rush similar to the effect of smoking a cigarette, but without the risk of chemical addiction or health concerns.
and I really, really hate the feeling tobacco gives, really unpleasant feeling

IMO breathing any smoke will give you an effect similar to smoking a cigarette. That's just your lungs reacting to being suffocated by smoke. To say there's no health concern about putting smoke in your lung is disingenuous at best. It might be less harmfull but certainly not without risk. Besides , it's usually in powder form so kinda hard to smoke unless it's mixed with something else.

I've both snorted and vaped it and while it does synergize well with cannabis I would not say that the "buzz" is similar. They go well together but they are not the same in terms of effect.

I ordered 3 grams. I'll post up a review of it when it arrives or when I get back to my apartment (currently on vacation for 2 weeks).

Does anyone know whether kanna is an SSRI?

I've heard that it is an SSRI. wikipedia says "Mesembrine is a major alkaloid present in Sceletium tortuosum, which is claimed by a US patent to be a potent serotonin reuptake inhibitor"

May not want to mix with other SSRIs

BTW, what's this business about mango? I had no idea about some supposed effect besides being completely delicious.

And it works, without being an SSRI.
PLus as you mentioned, they are completely delicious.

I tried a bit of this stuff last night actually. Besides being completely obliterated by a potent brownie, I was unable to notice any affect that would be attributed to the kanna. This is by no means accurate data but I wouldn't doubt the enhancing effects; I was just too stoned to notice. :ko:

Oh shit! I'm late on the band wagon, but this stuff sounds pretty interesting. Can't wait to try it on my own.

5446ThatsMyNumber,
Ug, I'm so tempted to buy some of this online and try it out in the hopes of my stash lasting longer. I tried the mangoes twice now and had no noticeably more potent effects than without, both were nice and ripe, and of course delicious, but not mind altering. Someone give us some Kanna experiences, please!

I have tried using kanna both on its own and with some weed. On it's own, I felt that the effects were very mild. It made me more talkative and I found that there was also a slight anti-anxiety effect. I didn't feel any pronounced effects of euphoria, nothing really notable in that respect. It may have been the batch that I got though. It was not of very high quality.

The packaging said that it was "medicinal" and akin to "medical SSRI's", with a warning that said to be sure to "Do your research." It sounded impressive enough, but when I inspected it I found many woody stems and some small pebbles in the packaged leaves.

The amount of stems in the mix was not really a big deal to me as I don't smoke, but I figure that it would be for smokers. I think that mesembrine, the active alkaloid thought to be the psychoactive responsible, is found in most of its tissues so vaping it shouldn't be an issue. The fact that it had little pebbles in it, however, bothered me as I cook with my ABV. If their quality standards are low, I don't know what other things I might be inhaling or ingesting (I don't even think there is much research on kanna). I do know that if the kanna is not properly "fermented" (to destroy its oxalates), it can cause kidney stones and kidney damage. The psychoactive alkaloids may improve long term memory (the only thing I have noticed so far is an increased ability to concentrate).

The plant itself produced a calming vapor. It was not harsh, nor was the vapor distasteful. It was... somewhat woody with a dull sweet aroma. I found that it paired nicely with weed, although I find weed on its own much more tasteful.

It seemed that the highs were much more cerebral and a little different (I don't know how to exactly describe it). I found myself saying, "Wow, that's enough" more often. I had two others vape it with me and on both times we had to cut our vape sessions short because we got so high.

I had a DB wand with maybe... .08 grams in it. I had .1 grams of this kanna stuff in the bowl with it. This bowl has been able to get me lifted (quite high) on 4 separate occasions, with one other person also having vaped out of it twice. I would be surprised if my friend and I were simply experiencing a placebo effect.

I noticed that my eyes got very red. This hardly ever happens when I just vape weed (I simply get a "glossy" look to them, but no redness).

I don't know if my increased light sensitivity was due to a placebo effect or not since it was so minimal.

Oh, one last thing to add is that I think that it suppressed my urges for the munchies. Food still tasted amazing though! :)

Interesting stuff. I really tend to appreciate it distinctly separate from other substances, caffeine, hops, alcohol, etcetera.

It creates a feeling not unlike but far more subtle than the pure form of a certain substance which was popular in clubs and often adulterated by people with bad scruples. It's kind of a joy to play the bass after smoking some kanna. For whatever silly reason, I haven't yet tried vaporizing it. It's certainly an interesting thing worth investigating, available inexpensively on Ebay. It's really very pleasant, overall. I've used it very infrequently, it comes on quick and has no discernable negative effects - I know that sounds like famous last words, but you know what I mean: you have some tea, you're fine. you have some fine beer, you're kosher - That sort of thing- just subtly, pleasantly mood altering.

Just saw this for the first time. What are some clean, safe, and quality sources for such a thing? I'd love to try it out, ideally in the form of a tea. Smoking it does not interest me as I am off of combustion.
