Etsy Glass

This is very disappointing news as I have been chatting back and fourth with GMD about an awesome custom piece... With a deadline of March 15th looks like I'm SOL ! ! ! :( GMD has been super cool in working with me to get EXACTLY the idea I have in my head onto paper... :brow: Etsy needs to reconsider their rules and regulations seeing as number one: There is nothing illegal about buying or selling glass for "Tobacco use only" :p and with MMJ the way it is there should be no laws against a "Marijuana Smoking Device" if your doctor is willing to put his practice on the line to say you would benefit from MMJ use... Especially when, as this thread is a perfect example of, there are plenty of people LEGITIMATELY trying to get these benefits in the least detrimental way possible... I.E. VAPORIZING... And adding additional water filtration can only make this less detrimental to your body.... RIGHT??? WAKE UP AND SMELL THE GANJA ETSY ITS 2011 ! ! ! Man I need to vape one after this discovery ! ! !

I always though Etsy was a stupid name but didn't consider it a stupid site.
Etsy banning bongs is lame!
Gonna have to all my buds on Etsy join Boro Market.

BOYCOTT ESTY!

Pappy,
Real shame about Etsy going all third reich on the glass blowers... It actually personally discourages me from going back into glassblowing, Etsy seemed like such an elegant way to do business. Hopefully they'll miss the money as much as we miss the glass and go back on the decision.

Those dealing with Etsy artists about custom pieces: have no fear! The artist can list the disallowed item as anything they goddamn please and just leave it reserved for you so no one else can buy it. This means that as long as no buyer is a moron and types "Great bong, broseph!" in the feedback, it'll just look like they sold the cover item. You all might want to make friends with the Etsy artists now.

broken link, here's a new one to that article:
E-commerce site Etsy exposes users' shopping histories

By Rosa Golijan

We all make some odd purchases online occasionally actually, we probably choose to make any particularly strange purchases online because they are odd and we generally trust that no one will ever find out about them. Unfortunately e-commerce site Etsy has betrayed that trust by exposing the shopping histories of its users.

Ars Technica reports that during the rollout of its new People Search tool, Etsy a site which encourages people to buy and sell handcrafted or vintage merchandise made some changes to what private information is publicly displayed by default.

As a result, Etsy users' real names and shopping histories are now public, easily searchable via Etsy, and being indexed by search engines such as Google:

Even if users haven't entered their full names, their profiles are still searchable by username. Even better, people's Etsy profiles and their purchase histories (via the feedback they leave) are beginning to show up under Google results for their names. Even if the buyer didn't leave feedback, a seller could leave feedback for the buyer and still expose what that person purchased.

Etsy users were not notified or warned about these privacy setting changes, so we imagine that many are currently rushing to conduct some damage control and prevent scenarios such as the one described by a commenter on the Penny Arcade Forums:

I just found a woman who's [sic] Etsy profile comes up on Google as the 5th link. I was expecting 6 or 7 pages down, but it's on the very first page, right after her online resumes (four of 'em - so I guess she's looking for work and this cannot be helping). She signed up a year ago, under the old privacy policy, and hasn't logged in since 2010.

And now I know what dildo she uses. Right down to the curvature and coloring.

The way to prevent potential embarrassment or scenarios like that is to log into your Etsy account, head to your profile page and remove your real name. After that, find the "Your Account" link, click on "Settings" and make your purchase history private in the "Privacy" section.
You might be asking what the big deal about this whole privacy setting change is if you can hide your search history and name with a few clicks and the answer is simple.

It's the fact that Etsy chose to make the sharing of additional information an opt-out "feature" instead of something that users can decide to do on their own. Had the e-commerce site left it up to users to decide whether they want the world to know about the hand-knitted socks they've purchased, then there would be no privacy freakout and far fewer embarrassing Google search results.

Wow, Etsy is a complete joke. That was a sure fire way to lose any and all credibility Etsy had in the quickest amount of time possible. I hope all the artist can find a new market to sell their goods and I hope Etsy is soon forgotten by all.

Interesting to read this. I haven't used Etsy, but all of a sudden I'm seeing a ton of GotVape banner ads and Vapor N02 ads on sites having nothing to do with cannabis. Just a coincidence that these are popping up everywhere?

Nope, that's google (and others) tracking our interests by the sites we visit and advertising accordingly. So easy a caveman could do it.

Aha! I knew something had to be up. So do some of these sites just have general ad space that pulls up anything that seems would be relevant to the browser's recent history?
