The Nomad From Morwood

@Dan Morrison ...maybe the default order should be the PEEK material, unless the customer chooses otherwise and notifies you?

FF

I think this is a good way to go, It's what I was thinking as well... PEEK is a great default option, but for those who would rather have no plastic, wood can be had. The PEEK, because of it's ease of manufacture, would be available for a lower cost.

A side note about cleaning the A. Blackwood. The alcohol boil/soak definitely depleted the wood of it's natural resins/oils, and this will make the wood more likely to soak up future resins/oils. So, it may be more likely to be tainted with aromas after being deep cleaned. I'd recommend applying a neutral oil to replenish the wood after a deep cleaning, something like mineral oil would work well.

I can see Dan working on assembly of our heater cores from all the way out here near Seattle. I don’t have much of an imagination, so I think it’s some kind of esp thing. Must’ve formed a connection from constantly checking this thread.

I finally broke my reset button.

I am still floating, in and out of space and time, only to be called back to this thread and now the whole Instagram thing.

Reliving broken dreams, remembering those four seconds between : the list is now open. And : your button will have to wait... I keep vortexing in and out, fantasy, or are these buttons really real?

Do they really exist? Do we really exist?

I mean, you must be a wizard of some kind, playing your tricks on our simple minds.

I just want to press a button now, can I please?

Alright @Dan Morrison, so now officially I have to make another choice? Ah indecision my old friend...

So is the officially recommended material going to be the PEEK in the end? For cleaning purposes, but also stability reasons?

If used in a location that always remains cool, even if the trigger is held down for a minute or two, then I believe I would not be too concerned despite being a anti-plastic purist (I've always been an advocate for the use of DELRIN though, for mouthpieces at least, which PEEK sounds similar to?) and I feel like it has potential to be more neutral tasting than wood, plus more resistant to oils etc... And cleaning an entire heater like that sounds pretty damn nice to preserve said pure flavors...

I am slightly curious to try both of course, as I'm sure many are, but it probably wouldn't make sense to get one module with each material, since I do not yet know which heater tuning I will prefer (nor which material...) so it probably does seem to make more sense to pick one material for both modules.

And so, I am inclined to go with PEEK for mine now, unless anyone can tell me a reason not to? :peace:

SO CLOSE! Homestretch Dan!

@Shit Snacks , PEEK is what Delrin wishes it could be.

The official recommendation is for PEEK. For all the reasons you stated.

Also, you can hold the button down indefinitely, the PEEK would never get hotter than it's safe operating temperature. I've tested it way beyond the limits of the device.

I used to be completely against plastic, both as functional parts and aesthetics. Back when I made pipes, and everyone else in the trade was using delrin and ebonite for mouthpieces and stems... I always used wood/bamboo alternatives.

But over the years I've changed my views. Plastic is just another material available to makers...and if you can take advantage of it's unique properties...well.. sometimes there is no better substitute.

And oddly enough... I've come to like its aesthetics, if done right. I've shifted more towards having an eye for futurist...things.. and a nice hand finished high quality plastic totally fits in.

It's just a shame that plastic, in general, is so overused, abused, and thrown away.

Since the design of the heater will be open source, can anyone give me insight on how this type of heater module geometry and material would perform if attached to a 510 mod using the mytubo or arcticfox firmware? :)

While my initial gut reaction is against PEEK, you've done enough to convince me.

If it's good enough for you and the various tests you've given it, I'll gladly give PEEK a try when I get my chance for a Nomad.

And hang on a minute, I feel like this PEEK discussion distracted from something really important: That blue coral button looks absolutely BREATHTAKING! It seems like you can't make a variation on the Nomad that isn't stunning!

Haha yeah I was totally :drool::drool: over that blue coral button too, if that had been an option I dono how I could choose! My abalone is gonna be great though... Anyway I am feeling inclined to go with PEEK now then as well, sounds like the perfect material for this application to me, I did always feel like the ABwood in the heater module seemed out of place for some reason

I understand the aversion to plastic, especially in such a beautifully handcrafted vaporizer. However, those beautiful buttons we have all been drooling over are, in fact, plastic. Cheap plastic is plentiful and has given the material a bad name. High quality plastics can have a very pleasant aesthetic.

Of course, it is important to note the possible safety concerns when used in the heater module/airpath. It seems like PEEK is safe for this application, but we can’t really know for sure.

It’s also important to note the same could be said about wood. Natural materials aren’t always safe. There are a few species of wood that are actually toxic, and many species including A. Blackwood can produce allergic reactions or irritation. It’s possible that using wood in the heater module could cause issues for some individuals.

It’s a non-issue since both options are available, I just wanted to provide some perspective.

Dan, did you work on ebonite yourself?

Would be nice to get a 510 adapter for the nomad with ebonite driptips. It would give the nomad a more stealthy appeal when used in public.
A nice wooden 510 driptip would also work but I love haptic of ebonite.

I feel that this device is stealthy enough as is. The nomad to me looks no more suspicious or dodgy than any other vape in public use. The amount of people who use vapes nowadays and with all the box mod vapes available, are people really gonna notice or even bother to take notice. I dont think they do. Im in the UK and never get a second glance in public when using portable vapes out and about. Yes these are mainly tobacco based in public use here, (mine isn't) but honestly who notices any difference. So many people vape now in the UK you hardly see people smoking a cigarette anymore. It has become a rarity. I have no qualms about using mine openly. Its only possibly the smell to be wary of....perhaps. And even that to me is a bit of a non issue.

I wasn't speaking about general appeal of "vapes". Most of them ARE suspicious. And a protruding glass stem makes a notable visual diffference to "regular" e-cig mods for sure which makes it questionable.
I think the suggested optical mod would let appeal the Nomad a big step more discrete.

@Fat Freddy I know exactely what you mean and you are absolutely right. Designwise it would be a shame. But I intended this mod (not protruding glass stem + 501 adapter + drip tip) just for camouflage on the go.

@Hogni nor me. Nothing to do with appeal. I really just think people dont generally take notice of any type of vaping in public now and I personally cant visually see alot of difference in vape design, especially with some of the box type vapes. I have seen plenty of “tobacco” vapes with glass stems akin to the nomad

I’m of the opinion. If you make your actions look suspicious or try to cover it up in anyway, thats when it becomes suspicious and people do notice. Act like everyone else does vaping, legal or not and noones bothered. They are only suspicious if you make them suspicious

When held in the hand is this really visually that much different to a Nomad? It still has a protruding stem and when held in the palm not much different in my eyes. (Apart from the tacky design of course as opposed to @Dan Morrison beautiful wood creations )

Apologies for messing up the visual treat this thread has become with the above monstrosity.

@Hogni, I think you'll find the Nomad to be tiny. It's easily concealed fully in your hand. The protruding stem is out such a small distance, I don't think it matters.

To adapt any part of the design to 510 would completely change the entire design, you might as well design a new vape from scratch. IMO it defeats the purpose of this vape, which is to put the heater at the very bottom of the device, with most of the stem inside the body. And a super minimal, tiny, heater module with no unecessary mass or heat sinks.

If you had to shift the heater and stem up ontop of a box, you basically have a device twice as tall. A heater + stem combo as tall as your typical drip tip would burn the shit outcha mouth!

Like 10 years ago I built a pipe and lighting system that was fully contained inside of a regular McDonalds drink cup. The smoke came out the straw. It was designed with one thing in mind, stealth. It was a stupid pipe. haha.

@Dan Morrison, when can we see a pic of the Nomad in hand to see the size?
Hey @Summer here is what we have been given so far to judge the size of The Nomad.

fumbyT8.jpg

Exact dimensions of production unit are:
3.36" High, 1.77" Wide, 0.89" Thick.
Or in metric, 85mm x 45mm x 22.6mm
Relatively tiny I think! I'd have no issues carrying this in a pants pocket.

Pencil for scale. The glass stem shown here is a tad long, I am going to shorten it a bit.
