I assume up on mine as well, at least from looking at the piece while pulled from the unit

haha, I did not look at it when I took it out. But the air comes from the top so it makes sense the open part of the inner mouthpiece would face up.

Does the mouthpiece have a 'right-side-up'? It seems the top open part needs to face up?

Yep, the opening has to be up when you insert the mouthpiece. It doesn't work otherwise. (It doesn't fit, either...there's a teeny notch on the bottom of the piece that snaps onto a little bump in the bottom of the opening. That's the bit that has to snap together to create a proper seal.)

After 2 weeks with this thing I'm loving it. I do have to say tho, I have experienced combustion 4 times now, and am wondering if anyone else has had this? The first 2 were on high, but the second 2 only medium high.

After playing with just about every possible way of hitting this thing, I'm pretty confident I can avoid combustion in the future. I have to say, what I'm settling on as my favorite technique is a bit different than what others are saying here. In my experience, packing a full bowl results in much more uneven browning, as the metal plate in the bottom gets hot from the air - just as the herb does - and bakes the bottom of your bowl through conduction. When I play with varying my draw to get the bowl as hot as possible I get very dark avb on the bottom and this is also when I've had combustion.

I find that a very loose pack produces even browning, incredible amazing flavor, and even successful stirring with the elusive "tap" method. I've mostly been using ground material, and have found that I can either fill it almost to the top, but so loose that I can see through it to some extent, or lightly pack about halfway up to create a bit of a disc that will float up off the bottom when you draw. Depends on stickiness, coarseness, and whether or not the herb had been compacted after being ground. Either way, I find that I can/have to put less force into my draw than with a full bowl, and the flavor is waaay better. I can extract the bowl to a very even, very dark brown and have great vapor for at least 6 hits - and often more as it seems to take a few more draws to really brown your material with just air. Watching through the window you can see your bowl lift up and smack against the glass - keeping it away from that hot metal. I like to keep drawing after I let off the button to clear the path and cool the the plate a bit. I still like to stir some so that I can visually inspect for bits that are over browning, but with the loose pack tapping against my palm actually seems to do the trick. I think I'm getting more bang for my buck this way as well - I seem to get the same enjoyment, and more complete and even extraction with less material.

I also think this thing is pretty damn simple to use. No matter how I was packing it, I've been able hand it to people and say "grab it by the buttons and hit it" and have them do pretty well.

Anyone using a grinder for their material with the ff2? Seems my hand tearing is fairly inconsistent and leaves some little sense nugs... Any grinder suggestions that would work consistently?

@toked23 when I "hand tear" more likely than not I get those "little nugs" too, but for me this consistency works fine. I have read that Santa Cruz coarse shredder works good if you just grind it for one small turn. I have not verified this personally. They run about $79 for larger ones. Spending that much for a grinder kind of turns me off since hand tearing is working so far for me. I would be curious if someone on this forum would use the Santa Cruz coarse shredder for their FF 2 and report back their results. So far I have only seen a couple of vape reviews online where the reviewer states that the Santa Cruz Shredder is preferred for the FF 2.

One thing I have noticed is that if I tear my buds up but leave it out for a few hours to dry my bowl burns more consistently, and I see more visible vapor.

I use a Santa Cruz 3 piece (I prefer not to separate my kief, but hate having to dump out 2 piece grinders, which also grind too fine) the 2" diameter one, and it works great. I pre grind enough for a day or two and put it in my jar (Santa Cruz also). I have had success hand tearing as well, but I find I get more even browning from the grinder. About $40-50 bucks on amazon depending on color.

Hello @TheHoF !

Excellent post, I have found the same thing about loading the FF2, I get much much better vapor when I pack very lightly so it's almost a disc that will life/levitate off the plate a bit giving more even extraction. I actually just "Flake" the weed into the bowl, then ever so lightly "tease" it into place :p

This week my LP weed is garbage, so it is getting extracted in 3 hits and they are all kinda week. I'm getting some top shelf stuff tomorrow and I expect he bowls will double in length and potency.

Makes sense. You're much more likely to get pyrolysis, or outright combustion, with a dense pack. It's also why it's easier to get thick vapor with a denser pack....less oxygen gives you tighter airflow. But it also increases the risk of charring. Great to hear you get good results with a looser pack.

I also think this thing is pretty damn simple to use. No matter how I was packing it, I've been able hand it to people and say "grab it by the buttons and hit it" and have them do pretty well.

Great to read this! This was my first impression of the 2....that it's dead easy to use and you can hand it to virtually anyone and they can get great vapor. It's been a little mystifying to see some folks become so frustrated by and with it.

It's definitely not him as im experiencing the same thing

I too experience the buzz. I have something similar happening to one of my box mods for vaping ejuice that buzzes as well. From another forum they discuss battery interfacing with circuitry.

'MODs deliver Quick / Short pulses of DC voltage to the atomizer, and "sometimes" can be heard as a slight Buzzing sound ... Its because PWM (Pulse-width modulation) technique on this particularly circuitry."

It's a tempeture control mod but wouldn't one think the the same applies to the FF2?

Now, this is just an assumption but sounds logical. My other box mods buzz or hum because of the same thing and when I look up reasons for them the answers are similar ... the pulsating DC voltage.

If someone else has another idea we'd love for you to share.

FWIW, in the grasshopper thread they had mentioned a buzzing sound as well remember when I read it. Similar situation? Would someone with a Hopper care to confirm?

Thanks and hope some of my info is correct and helps.

I got mine on Friday, and my experience is very similar to most others I think. Some notes:

- I did have chemical taste for first couple loads, even after first cleaning with ISO and letting it air out until I could get home to try it out. This has gone away now after about the 4th load.

- Taste is excellent!

- Draw restriction isn't that bad when compared to my previous Solo.

- Stirring is a bit of a pain, though tapping does work if loaded loosely.

- Definitely keep the brush handy for cleaning.

- Smell is SO much less than my Alfa. Yay convection!

I using a Nexus 6 with the latest n preview(beta?)

It's working fine for me. Make sure you have your location/GPS on, and permissions set to allow location. Dou le check that stuff and then freshly start the app. It should connect...

It does seem odd though that the firefly blinks... I think normally if the location isn't on and the permission's aren't granted it just doesn't show in the app at all...

I assume you have the Motorola made Nexus 6. Perhaps the issue is specific to the Huawei made 6P. Double checked everything and still nothing. FF app tells me there is no device to connect to. When trying to pair it like any other BT device the blue light on the FF2 blinks twice and the pair fails. I'll email the app dev and report back if I get a response.

Happy to report firefly has great customer service and will be sending me a new device. My warranty issue they said was a common thread among early problems. Button malfunctions. Anywho, thankful they are honoring the warranty.

That's Awesome! I love this vape. I hope you too have a much better experience with your new unit!

Just ordered a ff2 in white from vapeworld. I'll update when I get shipping confirmation. Someone in this thread said they ordered white from vapeworld and it shipped same day. Fingers crossed that it ships quick!

So besides buzzing, this is a solid device ?

Mine's not solid, it's fucking amazing.

I've got strong magnets, completely airtight lid seal, no buzzing, and it hits like a champ.

It's looking like the FF2 is gonna be my daily driver for concentrates for a long time to come. Any of the issues that affect dry herb do not occur when using concentrate. I don't stir at all and I get huge clouds at will.

The vapor quality on this is incredible, and I don't just mean taste. The way the vapor feels is great, it's cool and I can really tell that it's all vapor and not any smoke from a coil or a nail for example.

As others have said and I can confirm, the potency of effect from the Firefly 2 is extraordinary. I've never gotten so medicated using such small amounts of concentrate, the efficiency is as good as it gets on any concentrate device.

The ease of use on this thing is extremely underrated and is my favorite part by far.

I put in some concentrate, I put the lid on, I press the button and take amazing draws. That's it. It's just so easy and so good.

When it gets dirty I can easily recover some reclaim from the lid and have it looking brand new in 30 seconds - 1 minute.

As a portable concentrate vaporizer I'd give the FF2 a 9.5/10. It's nearly perfect and I prefer it over pretty much any other device out there right now
