Discontinued The Okin by D.M. Pipes

I had a special package waiting for me today, so I figured I'd give you guys a few tidbits of my initial thoughts. I’ll update later with more details and I’d like to get a full detailed review done sometime this weekend, and if it’s okay with Dan, post it here on the forum and/or on a personal site I’m working on.

On to the Okin...

First off, excellent work from Dan. The box looks beautiful and the card was a nice touch. The box and the Okin are wonderfully crafted and you can tell some time was put into building them (of course if you’ve been watching this thread you already knew that.) One surprising realization I did have upon holding it was how small and light it is. My brain had tricked me into thinking it was much larger than it really was from the pictures but I was pleasantly surprised. The small size and sturdy box has me thinking that in the future I wouldn’t mind tossing this in my pocket or a bag while walking around or traveling. Although, I’ll be babying it initially and for a few months to come.

Startup took a little bit, even though I had already read the instructions twice earlier in the day, and had them open while I was preparing the Okin. There is a learning curve, drilling the charcoal took some time, and I also had some trouble lighting it with a normal lighter. I was forewarned of that but didn’t have one available. It's definitely a worthwhile investment though so I’ll probably pick one up at some point. I’ll also start pre-drilling a few charcoals to speed up the process. Once lit, It did go out on me a few times, but that may have been because I was too busy admiring it and showing it off. Between relights I was able to get some pretty decent hits from this which surprised me because of it’s small size. Looking forward to mastering this bad boy. Overall not too bad, and I’m sure prep time will get faster as I get more comfortable with the Okin.

Final thoughts:
Sturdy and well built, but I won’t be tossing it around just yet.
A Torch lighter will be a good investment.
Steep learning curve, but I’m excited to see how it performs when I’m more comfortable with it.
Don’t know if it’s something I’ll be passing around a circle with friends. I did let my roommate try it, but I think it may be better as a solo vape.

That’s all I got for now, I’m sure my opinions and thoughts about it will shift around over the next couple weeks/months but these are some of my initial impressions. Feel free to ask any questions, some of them I may not be able to answer yet, but I'll be getting to know it better after some time.

@MindVape - Sweet! Thanks for sharing!

Tossing it into a pocket of bag is exactly what it's mean't for, toss away!

I am sure that you'll figure this all out in time, but I'll offer some thoughts. Keeping the ember healthy is all about keeping a rhythm I've found. And I think that to get a really good session you have to keep the ember lit.

Of course, I won't fault you for wanting to stop and admire! haha.

For groups, I always start it off, and pass it when the ember is nice and glowy. And just make sure to tell people to inhale long and very slowly, and pass it to the next person instead of holding onto it and letting the ember die.

But, yes, I too think that this is best as a solo vape.

Looking forward to more thoughts in the weeks to come! woop!

Many vapes & accessories. Always happy to help
@delloy @Walter Bishop , You both have the same place in line, your orders will be made/shipped at the same time. You can thank gmail for the mix up.

It's sorta funny to look at in my records... one person is #20.. the other is labeled, The Real #20.

Which one is the real one? I'll never tell!

Will the real Okin 20 please stand up? :D

I know i am in the last 10 orders (46 or 48 of 50? Can't remember) but i have no problem with this, in fact i embrace it. I mentioned this beforw but this vape is more of a pleasure to wait for then any other. Watching the progress and development with pictures is very cool. We can see the blood and tears of Dan, and what really goes into the process.

I mentioned before the possibility of not using this piece, leaving it out as a piece of art on a table or something. Shit... don't think i could do it. Maybe for a day or two? A week?

Just wondering, once lit has anyone just puffed away mostly hands free while walking around? I would love to be able to puff on the move, especially with the Okin hanging from my mouth and lips hands free. This is a feature i love about the VapCap, but i do have to continue to torch every 30 seconds or so. If i can puff away hands free with the Okin hanging from my lips for 3, 4, 5 minutes or longer i would be just so so happy. Cheers all.

OK so, a review so far:
As just discussed, it's definitely smaller than I thought it would be.
Overall its really, really well made, I think we knew that from the get go here though. Everything just feels really solid from the box all the way down.
I've been admiring DM's works for a long time, but only recently been able to afford one of his pieces. I haven't really smoked anything in a very long time, even then I only ever had a cigar every once and a while. I haven't ever vaped before so I wasn't sure what to expect. I knew there would be a pretty steep learning curve with the Okin, but i knew even if i didn't use it often I'd appreciate it anyway.

Last week after it came in I got myself nice lighter (blowtorch style) and some pipe tobacco, ribbons with no additives. I'm interested in hearing other suggestions for tobacco if you guys have any. I read the guide a few times and gave it a go. The first few sessions were not great. I had a lot of trouble keeping it lit, and even more trouble getting flavorful smoke out of it.

After some trial and error I was finally able to get a pretty decent session out of it today. I think my initial problems were that I was not packing it well, I was doing too loose I think, and i wasn't preparing and lighting the coal properly. I was doing 4 holes, but my spacing was not ideal - its tougher than it looks to get them all well spaced and straight through the coal, but it seems to matter a lot for getting a sustained even burn. Then, when lighting, i wasn't quite bringing it up to temp before trying to get it going, and over compensating by pulling too hard and overdoing it. You have to really blow on the coal until it heats your face up before you start puffing on it. Once its going i found that lightly exhaling on the coal helps to keep it going throughout the session. I seem to get the most pleasant results from long, steady pulls with not much force, just enough to make the coal glow evenly.

I'm really enjoying it!
