The Silpat is the same stuff. Probably even before that had oil slick pads. A cookie bking sheet - got at the grocery store. I can't tell difference other than the color. Think it was $22 and a nice large size.

Having short-circuit protection means the Persei is not a true mechanical mod. So it has all the benefits of a mech mod (unregulated current, high power) without the risks (overcurrent, batteries exploding due to mismatched voltage). I'd say thats a win.
But I am very interested in this DNA20, where can I find out more info? For the past year I was looking for a high powered VV vape and could not find one that went over 6v or 15w. All the ones that came up after a google search are the size of Zack Morris's cell phone.

I understand that manufacturers who sell goods in the US have insurance underwriters who demand such things as collapsible springs and safety fuses to prevent a user blowing his face off. Personally I would prefer the consumer be made aware of the differences. Safe chemistry IMR batteries don't explode, the worst they do is vent

Here you can see an IMR battery that gets shorted on purpose to see how scary and dangerous it really is. The danger is Li-ion batteries, they will explode, so DO NOT use them. How hard is that?

There is a thing for e-cig mods called 'Vape Safe 2 Cent Fuse'
1jKduto.jpg
it costs a few dollars, is not much larger than a dime, and prevents against shorts. It would be great if the persei had a TRUE mechanical button and employed the user replaceable vape safe fuse, that means only a few dollars to fix it yourself if you do end up shorting it.

that one is 6000mah.

If you want something more pocketable

Actually the 2900 loses a lot of mah to run at 20 watts, I dont have the numbers on me and its difficult to calculate with our engineer near me but to say that you still get 2900 mah is wrong.
Also to the part that 2x18350 stacked = 1600mah is wrong as well. Stacking only gives you the voltage, not the mah.

discharge time in minutes @ 3amps (7.4volt/2.6ohm) before reaching 3.2v cutoff

Panasonic NCR18650B 3400mAh = 50minutes
source: http://lygte-info.dk/review/batteries2012/Panasonic NCR18650B 3400mAh (Green) UK.html

AW IMR 18350 (700mah) = 15min

To truly measure efficiently you minimize unknowns and use the same conditions.

How do we define efficient, can we say for example that whatever provides the longest run time using IMR cells measuring no greater than 18mm x 70mm? If yes, clearly one 18650 3400mah beats 2x 18350 700mah. If no, why not, and by which parameters are you measuring efficiency?

Ok. I use all my oils with the 30% side of the coil. Does the size of the coil matter with herb?
So coil, extra mouthpiece screen, meds, top cap, then lights out right?

as far as i know its the same deal as if you were running it with just oil for the coil size. But you're gonna want to use a cut coil so that you can fit in more herb. SO 30% sounds good to me.

Amen. An more educated owner is always better than a less educated one.

I don't know about up there, but down here that's not how Tort Courts work, however.

You get an unfair advantage, you have only two languages to cover. Down here you'd need warnings in the owner's language of choice, signed and notarized before purchase....and that would only work sometimes. As soon as the 'poor vicitum's' Ambulance Chaser utters the magic words 'if only the greedy, money hungry maker hadn't been too cheap to include such a common sense protection for my client....' the jury is half off the leash. When push came to shove they'd pull a competitor's product or some 'expert' from a firm that makes springs into the party and the guys kids go to the college of their choice after all.

Here we (successfully) sue restraunts who give you hot coffee when you ask for it.

Sad state of affairs, but no corporate lawyer worth is salt would let this one pass without some serious discussion. If it's possible to put the wrong commonly available battery in and you could have protected for it but didn't the heats on you. That the other way Thermodynamics works.

all you wanted was the medical expenses covered but the jury decided to give you more" coffee :)

Thank you, you just made my point. "....and the jury decided to give you more" is well worth avoiding I think?

Fear of wild Tort rulings drives entirely too much IMO. We all pay for it. You've no doubt heard the bit where half the cost of step ladders is 'lawyer insurance'? "Deep pockets" might be good for the individual but can be bad for society. I suggest this is what causes the spring to be in the Persei?

I think there's a practical reason for the spring as well, but I bet the lawyers trumped the engineers here?

Jdee the Link you put up for the Panasonic is for a Li ion unprotected cell.

Furthermore the results arnt for testing qt 7.4v it is testing at 3.7v (4.2v).

To date I have not seen anyone take a 3.7v battery and boost it up to 7.4v and lived to tell about it.

Voltage and wattage are different if I'm not mistaken.

Well true you weren't watching me do it, but it's really not a big deal at all. I did it back when I was making battery packs for the PD. While some might differ, I think I survived.....and am telling it now? You need 12 Volts at a bit under an Amp for that. One of the ways I did it was with a 18650 and a commercial up converter like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/3-5-30V-4-0-3...&qid=1379614162&sr=1-15&keywords=up+converter

It's a common enough project that general purpose parts are made to do it. Literally hook up the wires and dial up the voltage you want. That one won't drive 5 Amps (rather about half that) but that's also just an engineering exercise away. As is putting it in a vape package.

It's just that right now that demand doesn't exist as I see it. Very few would pay extra for 1.4 Volts more they see no use for. It will take some far seeing risk taker to decide to invest the bucks in making such a product happen......which is where you come in?

PALE BLUE DOT
So I got a gram of top shelf keif. How should I go about using this in my Hercules? I melted some wax into a bit until it resembled very soft hash... but that didn't to too well when I dropped it onto my cut coil. BTW, can I just eat a ball of this wax/keif, or do I need to do something to it so I can metabolize it in my gut?
I use the HERCULES empty for HASH like materials!
Without COIL!

POLLEN PELLETS = KEIF + WAX + FINE GROUND FLOWERS (COLAS) = HERCULES

KIEF and WAX = KAX (FAX) = going to try this in a empty HERCULES SR71 (sound like a plan?)
Caligula[/USER] - one method - get a pollen press or a short brass tube (like you get at home depot for gas line) & some metal rod that just fits in the tube. Pollen press is easier and a cheap one is fine.

Load it up with hash, any type, kief and wax if you want. I use reclaim from my grain alcohol cleaning that's been purged. I also use new wax to. I layer kief , hash and the wax. I use like 4-5 grams of hash/kief. Throw the press together. Now heat it with a torch and press some more. Cool and remove.

Just cut of a piece with a knife, maybe break it up a bit and throw it in the SR-71 without the coil at all...

You can thank @ataxian - he gave me the idea... The best sleeping pill made IMHO
Likewise!

You are an inspiration!

Making a 3 gram batch today.
This is for the SR71.
I need the coils for straight wax.

It will be great for my INSOMNIA!

Voltage and wattage are different if I'm not mistaken.

If I go to this handy watts / volts / amps / ohms calc at http://www.rapidtables.com/calc/electric/watt-volt-amp-calculator.htm
I can enter the 2 variables I know, that the SR-71 cart is 2.6ohms (when warm) and that my mod is set to a power of 20 watts. The calc tells me I'm drawing around 3amps from my battery. Referring back to the test graphs, shows drawing 3amps will last me 50mins before I need to recharge. The voltage you are referring to is the actual charge the battery would display if tested with a multimeter. But if you believe these results don't count because the white rod is 7.4v, let's just apply them to the 3.7v black rod.

These DNA20 mods run off a single 18650 3.7v battery and are capable of reaching up to 8.3v without anyone dying. The info sheet can be found here
http://evolvapor.com/wp-content/uploads/dna20.pdf

The only cause for concern is if you exceed the batteries max continuous discharge rating, the 3400mah are rated to 6.8amps. That's safe up to 17v or 120watts when used with a 2.6ohm setup. But you are right that the batteries from the test are unprotected. The protection is built into the DNA20. But in the case of unregulated mechanical mods the protection comes from testing the resistance of your coil and knowing the limits of your batteries.

I have a question about the SR-71 i saw vids that people use it as a hot rod can it be also used as a dabbing set up by itsself? By that i mean does it have a slot for wax to be put in it?

Yaa see the sr 71 isn't 2.6 ohms it's more like 1.5.

Be careful of what your doing. That's all I can say.

Safety first always. Indeed from a cold start sr-71 reads 1.5-1.6ohms, as it reaches operating temperature the resistance changes to 2.6ohms, a behavior I've never observed in any other atomizer (sharply rising resistance). It takes around 20secs to get it warmed up when set to 20watts, If only I had a black rod it would heat up twice as fast.

Been running tons of oil through it, just took it apart not any leakage to the bottom chamber whatsoever. Using a 30/70 cut coil I prefer the 70 just because it holds more and it vapes fine. Flavor is really nice and clean. I like big hits, so to produce those I have to load generous amounts and preheat it well, but after that it surely delivers. Someone mentioned it goes through more material than cera, well the cera isn't really a big hitter, at least not with solid material. SR-71 has no problem with that thankfully. It will be even better when the black rod becomes available as the run times on some of the compatible batteries are quite good.

Regarding using the sr-71 cart on other mods, It's fun if you already have the gear but I wouldn't recommend it to a new user. Mostly because their all made to order/wait list type deals. The cheaper DNA20 mod I have doesn't support pass through, but the more expensive one does. So not really a money saving option.

Yes, agreed on the rod resistance change. I believe that was a design consideration to be more efficient. It takes less power to maintain the temp once its there...

My experience with such things is it's intentional to give more stable temperature over load and power changes. It allows for more power early on for faster total start ups as well. It's a traditional heater element for things like soldering irons and curling irons for women's hair where rapid start up is good, it gets to temperature faster yet idles well and is responsive to being used. I've used similar cartridge heaters in gear to do things like heat substrates, in at least one case it kept the hot part from running away when the air was pumped away in the cycle yet automatically ramped up the power when the chamber was 'let back up to air'. I suspect it's a parameter you can specify when shopping for them but have never tried.

Sorry if this is a little off topic. Yes, eat it !! I have some nepalese temple ball / oil / pollen mix (incredible stuff) and whilst I am trying to figure out the best vape method I have been eating it. Something a little smaller than a matchstick head dissolved in half a teaspoon of warm (not hot) olive oil and down the hatch. Takes about 45 to an hour on an empty stomach. Beautiful dreamy high that lasts for hours.

Back on topic - how should I go about vaping such materiel in a Persei?

well, put the wax/keif ball (maybe .2 of each?) into a spoon full (not a measuring spoon, just a soup spoon) of unsalted butter, which I then dumped into whole milk which I had been simmering. Let that simmer (not boil) for 15-20 minm which making sure t stir every few minutes. Let cool, then drank on an empty stomach. It was meh. No idea how much keif one needs to eat to have an effect though...

just make sure the material is decarbonized to get the max meds out. Normally at vape/combust temps there is some elements that convert to THC. People do that making edibles.
