The Tempest by Mad Heaters & Phatpiggie

Well here's something a little different. Anyone who has used a Sticky Brick can attest to them having excellent cooling properties. I think it's because of all the right angles. Surprised to find the BB3 fits natively into the wood and doesn't even need the oring. This is a Nova btw. I preferred the experience to my J-hook as it stands by itself and doesn't easily fall over and smash like my last two J-hooks :D EDIT - Just incase it's not spotted by some users I'm using the NOVA as a j-hook for the Tempest.

I’m considering making a cheaper IH instead ( below 125 usd) without proper temp control or just keep the wand for now if most ppl are happy with it as is. TBD after the release

Yeah just want to say I agree this would be appealing for me, don't need specific temp control, I just would like something that is much nicer than the wand (even though it is cheap, that is a big part of why I have held off on it)

Agree. I think the chance to have a smaller/ergonomic heater than the wand for on the go or so would be more important than the features like specific temp control.

But all depends on how the sales will go and the (IH) market

@VapingYogi You mentioned earlier that Tempest is a top 2 device for you right now. What's the other vape in the top 2? Do you see the tempest moving into a clear top 1 after more use? Or are your top 2 devices for different uses?

If this is too much of a comparison question, feel free to move into the other thread.
When you said "is it because they have different uses?" I realized yes, its because they have different uses.

Technically its 3 main devices, but I don't really think of Puffco products as vaporizers as such... & I haven't used it since I got the Tempest because I have been enjoying using my Tempest in a WPA and throwing my concentrates in that instead.

I have to admit, I find that I am using my other devices less often as the Tempest is able to deliver an experience that means I don't need to use my heavy hitters as often, I still tend to macro dose on my desktop ball vapes first and the Tempest fills in the gaps.

I get about half at best the number of heat ups from cold that you are with the stock batteries and stock zirconia balls. I mean, I'm not completely depleting the batteries, but when I put them in an external charger (Nitecore) there is only one bar left. Don't get me wrong, it's not a big deal since I have extra Molicel batteries, but just saying......
I haven't ever counted it, but the Aspire don't last a day/evening, I always end up swapping them out before the night ends if I put them in the same day, the P28 last a whole day and into the next easily and the Samsung batteries have lasted 2 days at the most.

Also we have to remember the Vestratto Forge is in final testing as well, its like a wand on steroids.

I'm not really understanding all the dislike for the Wand. I'm not one to let aesthetics get in the way of function. The Wand is really good at what it does, it's rugged and I've never had problems with it. I find the batteries last quite a while and I'm glad it uses 2x18650s.

I bought it for dynavaps (for which it's great) but unexpectedly it's worked for the Dani, the Convector, the Stunner and soon I trust it'll work for the Tempest when I get one. It's surprised me at how versatile it is.

Honestly, for it's price and how well it functions, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the most owned induction heater by dry herb vapers. I also like the fact that it's designed in a way that you can put objects straight through the coil.

Having never use a IH before the Wand I don't really understand peoples dislike for it, I only got it out of the box to use with the Tempest as it didn't add value over a torch for the Anvil or a Dynavap, but for the Tempest I am really liking it. The only thing for me is that I need a noise on timeout (or click discs in my Tempest) as I have walked away and come back to a cold device and had to start again (its not as bad as my ball vapes, I have come back to smoke a few times)

I'm a bit surprised you think the Wand doesn't add value over a torch. I'm not a torch guy so maybe I'm missing something torches can do that the Wand can't but I'm not seeing it. Well, aside from being able to heat glass and other things I guess...

You can position your vape at different distances within the Wand, just like using a torch to heat higher or lower along the cap. But for me the killer feature of the Wand is using it like you're lighting a cigar and drawing on the vape while heating it. You can experience way more tasty terps this way and you get to test the vapor production at the same time before removing the heat so in theory you don't need to wait for a click (if the device has one).

I don't think you could try this with a torch that easily with a flame really close to your face and hair. I guess smaller double or triple flame torches could work? Anyhow, I guess I like the quiet and the lack of an open flame in the house.

Edit: Also forgot, IHs aren't affected by weather, they always heat evenly (no spinning required) and little risk of burning yourself or lighting something on fire accidently.

I'm also sorta confused why ergonomics is a concern with the wand. Every other worthwhile IH on the market is a square block, they're like the least ergonomic thing possible if you need to hold it over a water piece or something. At least the wand is shaped like a remote and it fits easily in all of my storage bags.

I love my Wand, I never once thought "this is awkward to operate" while using it. The tempest "future proofing" is icing on the cake. I would have been real sad if I had gotten the YLL2.0 instead haha.

A torch has a ritual I enjoy, I recently added a Blazer Firefox and I really enjoy using it with Tempest. And for me personally, dialing in a torch ritual becomes a perfect-able manual interaction you just can’t get from a drop in heater. Sort of like a 6 speed versus an automatic, even today when I know for absolute fact the DSG version of my car is faster, I prefer the manual.

That said I like the wand and am glad I have it. I travel a lot and a wand travels much better than a torch and a can of butane. Plus it’s a far better dab rig than I think most people realize. Probably wouldn’t surprise you that I like a big torch on quartz for dabs; but I’d put a wand dab above any other electric dab I’ve had.

I'll explain myself a little better and say that the ritual of the torch is something I have always really enjoyed. So while the Wand is good, I like the ritual and would choose the ritual over any benefits of using and IH. I don't know why I have turned a corner with IH/the Wand with the Tempest.

For me the ritual was everything that made a dynavap good.

I haven't actually given it any thought, I'm just using the old triple cyclone that comes as a default in the old dynavap starter kits lol... I'm now curious what lighter/torches people are using that have a test kit (if they are using torches).

@RedZep which torch do you use for reheats?

I have a single flame mid sized torch called Vertigo. I have a triple flame now, but it just arrived yesterday. Haven't used it enough to say if it's reliable. The Vertigo has functioned for almost 2 years at this point though.

EDIT- with regards to torch ritual and preference, I still prefer using IH for initial heat up. My torch is just as fast, but 38 seconds with torch makes me feel like I'm going through a lot of butane. This is silly as my torch has a large tank and rarely needs refilling, but it's just an OCD feeling. I much prefer the 18-20 second torch reheats for chained bowls.

Put simply, if I could only afford a Tempest right now, and had to only use torch, I would still be in love with the Tempest. However, the wand undeniably improves experience, and gives options, which I feel more and more is what the Tempest experience is about, sheer options and versatility.

Just finished the count again and it's 15 for me, battery voltage is 3.38V at the end of the test.

I personally love the wand , im never using a torch again....the wand gives me a perfect roast everytime so why would I want the hassle of firing a torch at my Tempest and making lthe cap look burnt to shit 🤔
Yeah see that’s my problem, I love using the torch but it’s so pretty.

I doubt I’ll use the wand with a dynvap but it’s my preference with the Tempest.

I got my Tempest yesterday. I haven't used it enough to formulate a proper opinion yet. But one thing that immediately impresses me is how strongly it is attracted to a magnet. Its really quite unbelievably strong of a connection. I was worried about actually being able spin the bowl off on the reload, it does this no problem. You practically have to tip the thing sideways to get it off the magnet.

I have had a wand for ages and I think I had one of the earlier ones that came out., used it with a DV as my main way of vaping outside of a moderately priced electric unit. I like the functionality of it, but it is large for when I am out and about. It is not a bad unit by any means but I would love a IH that has a timeout feature I can set easily (like the wand) but is smaller and boxier, think the size of a pack of smokes in length. I am not saying for a minute that is possible. I don't know if it is... but that is my dream IH!

Wand works fine for me, but I'd upgrade for the smaller one if it worked like I said! I love the ritual of rolling a blunt or whatever but never liked using a torch on a vape, always felt weird and slightly embaressed to do it around others.. Probably just past experiences and that probably is just a me issue.

I do wonder about vapes that take 18650s like the Angus or AVLP if that same kind of unit could be made work with a ih or similar? Same size, controller and just a IH with glass insert up top so we could see the temp gauge?

I've been using the underside of the reload 2 lid, still strong enough to unscrew no problem and not as hard to remove!

but the forge is bigger than the wand and I expect it to be expensive (300-400$). It can be powerful but the tempest needs more time, even if a ih habe more power than the wand. (If it can heat faster the anvil is because vestratto made a new tip for it…or it seems like that)

The wand is great. And have a good ergonomics for bong use and normal ergonomics for home. But not for the go.
And, about devices, it is great for the DV, DV+armored and tempest. I don’t like it for the convector (The yllih works better with it). And i see a waste of time to use it with the stunner, Dani and anvil…you get really long heating times and the heat disipates to the stem while you heat the device on the IH…

Anyway this is the tempest thread. The wand works really well, but if you want to go outside is better to go with a torch. If there is wind, game over (at least in my zone)

And the chance to have a real modular ecosystem would be wonderful. By now, the wand rocks (i wish i didnt use a torch on mine seeing the cool bronze looking on all your tempest haha :D)

Wouldn’t the wand be better outside? I at least personally have better experience with it over torches outside. Torch outside I have to find the right light to actually see it, and if there is wind, makes my torch heating unreliable. This is at least my experience with wand vs torch in Dynavaps and would assume the same for tempest.
