Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

My Black Cherry buds didn't purple hardly at all. My stuff rarely 'purples'. Not sure why.

Here's my quick recipe for carts. I think the ethanol is supposed to be done cold. I have not tried it cold. I will next time.

Makes about 2 carts.

A. 1 gram rosin. I use a 20ml beaker for mixing

B. Mix with 10ml Everclear (ethanol) I did this when the rosin was warm, actually heating on the hotplate to thin it down. I'm pretty sure I'm wrong way on this and it should be done ice cold. Either way, mix it thoroughly.

C. Filter. One time I used a small Buckner funnel and a vacuum with a coffee filter. This time I just used a .22um syringe filter. Available most anywhere online. VERY slowly. Drop by drop. Press too hard and it breaks through the filter.

D. Heat on the hotplate at about 170F. I stir often. The agitation helps with evaporation. Tiny bubbles all around the edge. As soon as the tiny bubbles turn into large bubbles, remove from heat. I believe this is the rosin starting to decarb and an indicator that the ethanol is all gone.

Reduce heat to about 120F

E. Add dilutant. I use about 1:1 rosin to dilutant so I added 34 drops, which is about 1 gram. I had some Vapeur Extract left over. It is about half PGP400 and half Veg Glycerin. Add slowly and mix well. Not above 140F

I let that sit to see how liquid or solid it gets. If it's a little too stiff, I add a tiny bit more dilutant. I like it about like thick syrup. If all is good, I heat it up and use a syringe to put it in the carts.

I also think that decarbing the rosin before doing anything will thin it down. I have heard that but not tried it. I don't like the carts so I don;t make many of them. I don;t know why we don;t just buy 'bubblegum' e-cig juice and mix it with rosin. I may try that next.

Enjoy. Please feel free to ask questions.

Because it tastes awful and gives a headache that the rosin doesn't?
I tested a small couple aromatised and clean e-juices. They all gave me headaches and made me cough. It did not inspire me to spend money to test more. But I would love to find a tolerable diluent or e-juice.
At least you can test them before you mix them with your rosin.
Can you get clean (preferably cannabis derived) terpenes to dilute? That is what I probably would try.

Between steps B and C. do you let cool down your solution or even freeze it? Is it perfectly translucent or slightly opaque, before you filter?

Agreed. I am NOT a cart person. One friend I make them for does it because he hides from his girlfriend and another is super paranoid about smell. LOL What a waste, I agree. But, to each their own.
OK, so the e-juice tastes like shit? LOL I tried putting peppermint and some other Loriann (sp) flavors in some carts I made years ago and it was even worse than plain. LOL @Sick Vape , yes you can buy pure terps for dilutant. Stay away from True Terpenes but some others have good terps. Verify your source, is all I can say. With people like True Terpenes selling mineral oil and the idiot Drew Jones selling E-acetate, you really need to trust your dilutant supplier.

@emmdeemo I verified my plate temp with a contact thermometer and they were within 1 degree.

I used to press in a freezing cold garage and the rosin often came out in almost solid pieces (very nice appeal)

And i do think that higher terpene content will equate to more runny oil,
Which is also why all the growing factors affect the result so much, since that is what determines the final terp % (at least a big part of it)

@Hackerman what is your grow method organic or salts? If organic, no till?

I just hate carts, am I alone here?

I read and just think that is a waste of perfectly good rosin... Like taking a gloriously aged whiskey and mixing it with Coca Cola.

I really like a good cart, I Actually find them more efficient than dabbing when used microdose style. We get some really good ones here in SoCal. They have the tek pretty dialed in now where it's literally just live resin sauce, or co2 sauce, or rosin. With a nice live resin sauce cart it's like a direct inject of terps!

I eperiment with pg, vg, peg400 (wax liquidizer) and cbd distilate....

Experiment with pg: only heated rosin (temp under boiling point) then mixed with pg truth syringe filter ->
pg and rosin seperates with time... (vg is more useless does not mix good with rosin)

Experiment with peg400 (wax liquidizer): heat rosin and wax liquidizer fill in cart (without any filtering) did not seperate, darkned or so after 2 months... but I am not a fan of mixing peg400 with rosin (because of health reasons)

Experiment cbd distilate: warm up rosin and distilate mix fill in carts (without filterin) after one month stable no seperation or darkening -> this is until now my best solution... but I am not sure if cbd have effects on my high... Heared cbd can counteract thc or so...

I would like to find a way to put only rosin in the carts...

my motivation for carts is: I am still smoking js (because of ritual and convinience) and vaping, dabbing is not as convinient for me... I thought carts are similar like smoking js and I can transist from smoking totaly (easier)...

I read that the preferred blend is 1/2 pgp400 and 1/2 vegetable glycerin. One helps keep it mixed and one helps something else. Anyway, I read a couple places that 50/50 is the preferred mix and then add your rosin and/or flavoring. Have you tried half of each mixed together?

Undiluted Rosin carts are still the most difficult to produce as you have to use mechanical separation to control the wax/lipid content, which is the main issue getting rosin in a cart. With solvents, there's more control over the extraction parameters, but regardless, making great cartridges at home is still pretty difficult. This is why Blue River has the most unique extraction process in the entire industry is they have the tek to remove those plant waxes without any petrochemicals. Others ways to make solventless carts include repressing rosin to isolate THCA, decarbing that, and then vapor distilling the rest of the plant for pure terpenes, which are then combined with the THC oil made from the isolation. This can even be done with flower rosin.

Otherwise starting with incredible quality hash rosin and using jar tek is pretty tried and true, this method is certainly being done commercially but you have to use incredible hash to minimize the waxes and fats from the get-go.

no as far as I know vg is not recommended it does not mix well with rosin and seperates with time...

wax liquidizer contains pg, peg 200 and peg 400... I think best is peg 200 or peg 400 for mixing and staying stable...

I think if I remember correctly I used 50/50 rosin/waxliquidizer... as said no filtering required and stays stable if you keep it also in a dark place it should not darken after time...

mecahnical fractioning is not efficient for private use I think...

jar tek sounds interessting but people do not like to give away knowledge... and there are too much different informations... @invertedisdead

think blueriver is also starting with full melt (then maybe a tech like mechanical fractioning or jar tech) and then ultrafiltration (forcing rosin trough filtermembran with high pressure...)

Blue River uses proprietary technology/equipment to isolate trichome heads by size, it's then pressed into rosin and mechanically separated into THCA and sauce. They seem to use cannabis terpenes extracted from the strain to remove the plant waxes, possibly similar to winterization.

There's really just no way to efficiently make undiluted rosin cartridges, that's why they are the most expensive cannabis product in my state. Around $80 for a half gram :ko:

Whats the method for pressing wet buds?
Or 2-3 days dry but still moist, def over 62% ?

I usually get all them plant juices / water out in the rosin when i try to make it this "live" ,

I'd let it dry for at least 4 more days if you can. If you want live rosin you need to make hash, though realistically, average press temps probably destroy a lot of the delicate live terpenes anyways, especially with flower since the terp profile is not as concentrated as hash rosin.

Yea this short dry suck, ive been having issues getting enough ready fast enough since that damn raid.

Such a waste of perfectly fine flowers lol...

Its like there is a small amount of water in the final oil, A slight szizzle on the quartz when it hits the surface
and explodes a little in the banger too, leaving residue up the side walls.

And the taste is just next level bad, kinda like smoking ruined wet bubble

I fucking love my pot like I love my rosin- NATURAL. No additives.

Please let me lean on your experience. I’m willing to explore.

I’ll be in San Diego At the end of April. What brand carts should I be seeking??

I believe that may not be correct. CO2 carts and even the distilled BHO carts in our legal med program have no thinners or cutters. Yes, terpenes are added back, but I see that as putting back in what the extraction process removed rather than be a dilutant or adulterant.

You'll note I said rosin cartridges. Undiluted carts made with solvent extracts are much easier and more cost effective to produce. Larger batch processing and using the solvent to control the plant fat solubility allows this.

Some of my favorites are Outco Co2 Sauce, Buddies Liquid Live Resin, and if you can find Blue River that would be a real treat!

Outco does a very unique unwinterized co2 sauce (terpene percentage is on the box which is very nice!) Buddies liquid live is just live sauce (BHO - note they also do a cheaper distilled version, I recommend the liquid live resin) and Blue River of course has an extremely unique solventless extraction process. If you get to March and Ash they have probably the best selection of live resin cartridges in SD, even smaller craft companies like Suprize Suprize live resin carts. :leaf:

I would love to try blue river terps. I only heard of one other real cannabis terp seller over here, but cannot remember the name just now.
Happy I could make you laugh with my experience.

Blue River actually stopped selling pure terpenes, IIRC the Feds were giving them a hard time over them since they come from a schedule 1 plant.

Have you heard of microwave distillation? Pretty interesting stuff :science:
Too bad most of these lab toys are cost prohibitive for the home presser to experiment with.
not high tech microwave distilation...and you have to use water (so not totaly solventless like real microwave distilation as far as I understand... let s say you would use bud instead of orange peel what would you get out of it only terpenes or also thc, cbd ... what would happen with waxes and lipids?
