Definitely prefer the round, lens style button to the blocky silver one. Even a circular silver button would be preffered. I do like the look much better with no brass. As you said, the brass is more steampunk and this suits the look of the vape much better.

The silver block you see is the contact surface for the small button on the other side. ;)

I'm surprised I feel this way, considering I generally don't like the steampunk aesthetic, but I like the brass better than the silver. It really compliments the color of the wood. That said, in either color it's one of the best looking vape I've seen. Super excited to be on the waiting list!

I would tend to agree with you on that point; maybe down the road Dan might make some units from a black wood? That would look nice with the silver!

Or maybe he would consider an unfinished wood that would take a nice dark blue/green stain applied by the customer?

So the way the bottom metal piece is now, hard to imagine the bottom cap attaching by any method other than magnets. Unless it's just going to be held on by the sleeve. What's the air intake/venting situation going to look like on the bottom cap?

The sleeve and wooden bottom cap will be glued together, one piece. The friction fit of the sleeve is all that's needed to hold the bottom cap on.

Here is a slightly improved heater design. African Blackwood air inlet.

Ribbon used is Nichrome. I am currently using nichrome because it's basically the only material I can find in the size I need. This may change to SS down the road.. but I'm not sure that SS will work quite the same... We will see.

The ribbon I am using is very wide.. you can't see it, but it extends down into the heater module shell. Huge surface area.

Resistance is 0.6 ohm. Which means this will run anywhere around 20-30 Watts depending on battery voltage, and pull a max of 7 amps. I've found this to be a great middle of the road heater module. Heat up time is ~2 seconds.

This HM is still powerful enough to overpower a strong draw speed, but slow and cool enough to keep it under control and easily avoid scorching.

A slower/cooler HM is definitely possible, and would give more control to newbies in group sessions.

I had been thinking for a while about making the switch to the 20700 or 21700 battery size that's just coming to market. A kind soul has recently urged me to do so as well...

But, I am still holding on to the small size..and just can't bring myself to make the leap yet. Even though it's just a tiny size change...

Thoughts?

To frame the question easily for our members:

By increasing the cell diameter by 2mm and adding 5mm in length (going from 18650 = 18mm x 650mm to 20700 = 20mm x 700mm) it is possible to considerably increase the cell capacity.

The first manufacturer to make the move was Panasonic/Sanyo. They are currently in partnership with Tesla automobiles to develop the 21700 cell that will be used in their new cars. They also released two 20700 cells for the general public:

Sanyo NCR20700A = 3000mAh at 30A continuous discharge
Sanyo NCR20700B = 4000mAh at 15A continuous discharge

For comparison, the 18650's we use today are either 3000mAh at 18A or 1500mAh at 30A. The B cell would offer 1/3 more capacity and the A cell would allow crazy powerful heater modules with the same capacity.

And this is just the beginning, other battery manufacturers are likely to follow!

So the question is: would having more battery capacity or access to more power be worth a small increase in vape dimensions?

The only unknown so far is whether 21700's will be released to the general public or be reserved for Tesla. I.e. we don't know if the industry will standardize on 20700 or 21700 (1mm diameter difference)

Note: going 20700 could possibly still be compatible with existing 18650 provided an adapter of some kind is used.

Ok, well in that case...

Having used 1, 2 and 3 battery boxmods with my eraser, I'd vote minimal size increase for longer battery life, for sure.

If you were going to retool would you still be able to produce 18650 based models or would you only be offering the 20700/21700 version?

As someone who owns a ton of 18650's, I'd prefer the smaller size. They provide plenty of power for our purposes IMO, and are widely available for very reasonable prices.

I think it makes more sense to make a bigger version of this vape if and when the 21700's become widely available. The differences seem too minor to be worth being an early adopter for.

If this vape is currently the size of the Okin box, that's nearly perfect. Keeping in mind this thing is going to be portable, pocketable, every MM can make a difference, and even though the Milaana is my favorite portable, I take the FW4 out with me more simply because it's smaller and more pocket-able with similar-ish performance. The Okin box is right between the Mi and FW4 in terms of thickness. Personally I would prefer it to not get as thick as the Mi.

I would be interested in seeing a dual 21700 regulated vape that uses the same modular heaters as this vape though, something different going for the high-end, high-power mobile users, but that would be a whole separate project at this point.

If you do end up going with only a 21700 version, would it be possible to include a spacer so it can work with 18650's?

EDIT: Since these new batteries have the same voltage, they're not going to provide more power in an unregulated setup, so with your Wave heater they'll provide no benefit at all besides capacity, which is very minor and carrying around extra batts is always an option. Other heaters could potentially use more amps but are you really close to using the 30A discharge rate 18650's already support? Is that potentially extra 5A really going to make a big difference in performance?
