Discontinued Zion vaporizer

I don't think that it matters when the cells are in series (vs parallel) If you get a cell that sags more than the other it means its internal resistance rose up and it's permanent. So I think whatever slot you put it in it will always end with a lower voltage.

The idea to swap their position came more from the fact that one is closer to the heater and gets warmer. But in practice the heat seems to be diffuse in the Zion and both cells end equally lukewarm for me after an extended session. Don't sweat it too much, cells are relatively cheap and they will degrade whatever you do, and at least in this vape we can change them easily.

Yeah, I've been using the same 2 pairs since june and I still have never used more than a set in a day. I've been very happy with the battery life but since this is my first 18650 experience I don't have much to compare it to. As long as 2 swapped sets never leave me with no Zion, I'm good. :)

I could feel warmth on the body of mine. Going to charge the batts that came with it and see what happens. I think something is amiss with mine though. Will report back.

Bummer! Sorry to hear! Rest assured RBT will get it firing on all cylinders.
I don't anticipate people having trouble working this device.
It's a, if you think there's a problem there is, type of device.

@phattpiggie very seldom is the wait worth it in life, which puts the pressure on the source of wait.
Wait also builds expectations. So do beta teams.
So far I'd say it was worth the wait, as my expectations (that i felt were built up till now) have actually been met.
But hasn't the wait only begun for the next device with RBT heater tech?

Personally I think this is overkill. I do rotate them with each battery change, but I don't think swapping every bowl will really give you any better battery life. JMHO

I just remember reading it a few different times and thought how big of a PIA it would be. The task is simple with the magnetic lid, it's just remembering to do it.
I can see it becoming part of the ritual for me.
I'm a tinkerer of stuff, so gives me something to do.

Yeah there was a test done that showed that they fell out of balance if used for a while without flipping, so it is largely to keep the paired levely, but not a make or break thing

@Mulehead yeah its easy to do in my Zion ritual, especially with the production battery door, kinda fun too, and I guage whether I feel a given bowl lasted long enough to warrant a battery flip, I may do two if they're small and quick, and sometimes a bowl lasts a long time but I don't swap in between.

So I charged the batteries that came with the unit. Turned the dial to around 50% I'm guessing. Held the button for 3 seconds and then began a slow steady draw. Got nothing. Kept the button pushed and took a few more draws with a couple seconds rest in between. Nothing. To be honest, I'm kinda scared to push it too much as I don't want to char anything more than it could be already. Anyway, I'm waiting on a response from RBT. Will advise.

By the way, is it ok for the batteries to rattle around in the back? Also, the battery cover fits poorly. Seems the magnets and holes don't line up too well. We'll get it sorted, I'm sure. Just curious how other units compare. Love the feel of wood though.

Definitely sounds out of whack in a couple ways unfortunately, but you get to be the first warranty claim? Prob shouldn't try to use more

The battery cover on my Zion fits pretty tight, the magnets on yours could very well be slightly misaligned. The cap on my unit does not fit as well as it could but no big deal, a little wood work gave it an acceptable fit.

After a couple of days with the Zion, it continues to deliver great results. With a 5 sec preheat at 100%, bulk of my use has been between 70 and 80% power with the last couple of hits at 90%. Powerful and flexible, it easily outperforms my other vapes (except for pocketability) and is impressively stingy with my stash.

#22 came today. Batteries are charging. It actually looks pretty easy to use without the long learning curve I usually need. Hopefully not famous last words. Fooling around with it while waiting for the charge to see how everything works- the temp dial is Very difficult to turn. I turn it to 15% and it goes back a bit to 12%.

Yeah ok Mag, sounds kinda like Zig (his is due to his body and he's an OG beta), I don't use him past 75% bc its too tight to the wood and he's tuned up superduper hot anyway so no need. Anyway yeah just be careful with it and it should still work fine, the bounce back shouldn't really affect your ability to temp step or anything, tight dial like mine but still works, so you can at least use it normally for now I think

Apart from the obvious physical differences like the stash pot, stirrer and stem storage, the main difference (only real diff?) is that the Zion has a dial to regulate the power that the button delivers to the heater.
The single battery Ion or USB or whatever RBT ends up calling it, just has a button.
So power regulation is performed by the user 'feathering' the button.

I've had my first try at the Zion. Not as quick a start as some have mentioned but once I hit 50 I got some clouds. Temperature dial won't go past 50 but no clouds lower than 50. I think that's hot enough but I haven't tried it with water yet. The wood also gets pretty warm. Has that happened to others besides Madcap? At this point I don't think I need to use the warranty but I wish mine was problem free. Maybe mine feels slighted because of being nameless. Maybe Aiden will be happier.

You need to be giving it some serious power - I'm generally set at 70% plus - to get those instant & tasty, first hit clouds.

And yes, the wood body does give off a slightly glowing feeling of warmth - particularly if sessioning - but in my experience it never gets really hot, or uncomfortable to handle.

Your dial won't go past 50%? :hmm:

Where do you think 50% is on the dial?

This is Vyv with the dial set to minimum power . . .

. . . At roughly 50% . . .

. . . And shown here, set to maximum . . .

ZION POWER!

:borg:

Personally, I would get dry, even low temp hits dialed in before taking it to water :2c:

But I'm sure Aiden will grow to be very happy.

KeepOn.

@little maggie if it were me I would have had an allen key in the grub screw on the knob, loosened it off and removed it. The potentiometer spindle should have a flat on it so it can only come off and go back on the same way. If the spindle turns thru the full sweep then it is the knob that is fouling the wood. The knob may just need raising slightly or the pot moving slightly to one side. I would not expect anyone not fully confident to do this. If in doubt then send it back. I can fully understand you may be reluctant to return your new toy just as it's arrived.
@VegNVape great fotos as always. Fan of old floorboards as you know.
Perhaps RBT could put one small mark at the minimum and 2 at the max setting just so everyone who receives a new Zion is in no doubt where the power is set.

Markings around the dial?!:worms:

;)

Really?

Believe me, it HAS been discussed extensively.

But providing that the Zion is functioning as it should, you can turn the dial in one direction until it stops, & then turn it the other way, until it stops. Min & max. Simples.

And as long as you know that it does not spin a full 360°, you should be not be tempted to force it further.

So, if you feel no heat, you are at the lowest end - but if you feel heat & get vapor - you at the opposite end.

Once you know where the beginning & end is, it really is not difficult to get used to, imo.

Personally, I like the bare innocence that my Zion exudes when sitting around, cap on. Markings around the dial would detract from this and imo, only really be useful in the first instance.

I believe these current Zions have gone out without any guide or manual in the box - future production will include a quick-start guide which will contain information for reference such as the power dial positioning.

Anyway, Vyvyan is perfectly happy as nature intended.

Fair enough, I'm too new to have been party to those discussions, and despite my efforts to read from the beginning, the thread is gargantuan, and there's only so many hours in the day! (why did my auto-correct change 'hours' to hoes?, not cool :uhoh:)

Besides which, your Zion competition is becoming a full time job!

I guess there would be nothing difficult about making our own marks (once we've determined where min and max are for ourselves, which might vary from Zion to Zion), maybe torching the tip of a small flat screwdriver?

I attempted to remove the knob by loosening the set screw. No deals. At least not with the force I'm comfortable applying to it. Also, my knob's range of motion is about a quarter of what is shown in the pictures shown a few posts back.

Shame @little maggie, good you can still use it a bit, 50% is at least a nice sweet spot for clouds and flavor (will just take a few hits or preheats to really get going with big clouds there though). Absolutely start a ticket to get in touch with RBT, maybe he can talk you through it instead of sending it back even, but either way he should be made aware asap.

Thanks for photos @VegNVape thats how my Zenon the Zequel is too, though she's tuned super cool so I mostly use her in overdrive now (if noon is 0, I think of 6 o clock as 100% and past that is bonus up to 11, but my betas are both obviously tuned different)

@Madcap79 yeah definitely off, I see your magnet, that may be misplaced but I don't know how it can be fixed really (or if its covered or not?), but yeah the knob is not right...

So, I did a little troubleshooting and found that one of the metal contact springs for the batteries was bent too much and the battery wasn't making proper contact. I bent the springs out a bit and installed the batteries. Much better contact and fit and they don't rattle around as much as I had mentioned in an earlier post. It's producing heat now at least. I will ops check it with some herb later. I have to go do some checks on an APU soon and want to be able to think. Haha. The temp knob is still fucked I believe but I'd like to at least get a decent session out of it before I send it back. Also, the reason my battery door fits like shit is because one of the magnets pulled out of the lid and is stuck to the body. That's my next project tonight, fixing that. Anyway, there is my update for know, if anyone cares. :)

Pretty interesting looking heater as well, from what I can see. I may ask if I can try to repair/replace the potentiometer on site........:borg::science:

I had this issue, and it was significantly worse after I tried fitting my XTAR batteries in; they're slightly longer, somehow, and compressed the contact springs WAY too much.

Both my sets of batteries were loose fitting prior to bending the prongs. Two separate brands and one set is straight from RBT. We are going to look at the potentiometer next and do some phone troubleshooting to possibly fix it.
