Wood and log encyclopedia

With my ever growing interest in exotic woods used for log vapes and stems, I thought it would be beneficial for myself and others to have a thread devoted to species of wood and what they look like. I hope to have simply pictures of wood with the name of the species. Since we have other threads to discuss the actual vaporizer this one is focused on the wood.

I ask anyone interested to share pictures of what wood they have and help build this community encyclopedia.

This is my Nano replacement. I originally had a Koa Nano which cracked after a few months. I like the looks of this one better. I don't think it is Koa Burl, if someone knows, please advise? Thanks

I'm working on two things right now in the shop which have just been milled and run through the planer. I'll post follow up pics when any of these reach a finish stage. All of this was cut down on our property and put in the kiln for approximately a year.

The pictures are not really the best, but I was anxious to weigh in a little something on this awesome thread (nice1 @Philreal187 ), so while out on a walk yesterday, I managed to snap these few pics rather hurridly in the last few streaming rays of sunlight.

Props to Triihouse's @TriiKLe and @matte green for doing such lovely things with some of Mother Natures finest (which in turn, allows me to do some pretty damn fine things myself with even more of Mother Natures good stuff!).

Quick follow up to my osage orange post above. These trees are rarely big so I find I get 5/4 planks moreso then thick, 8/4 and above pieces. This last one gave me some nice thick pieces though so instead of accent pieces I'm getting to use it for base material. This will be turned for the bottom of a segmented bowl.

A piece of English Walnut which I've carried around with me since forever. I've had it longer than I've had my little one. 10+ years. I've never had anything in mind for it. And still don't really. Borrowed a chainsaw and split it down today. Hopefully looking at a wooden blank will give me some inspiration. I know at least one bit will be getting put aside for if/when @RastaBuddhaTao starts selling kits and another will be getting turned into a stem for another little project.
So all 'before' fotos.
Inside and out.

I may just sand and polish this piece, a quick wax has brought the grain up nicely.

Possibly a stem for this one but possibly not, who knows.

Saw cut is giving the impression of a wavy grain pattern.
Love this but don't think my skill levels are there yet.

This is not exactly vapor related, but some of the osage and walnut planks from above were used in the top of this piece and I thought people might be interested to see how I use colored wood as accents.

Excellent @Bongologist looks like a lot of hours gone into that.
I turned up some Sumac that a spoon carving friend had taken down.

I cut it at an angle and then set to. My skills are a long way off yet and it's a pig for tearing. It bit the dust along with a piece of walnut I was doing today. Both went in the burner.
On the colored wood front I've been trying out ebonizing.

Tea bags soaked in water and then vinegar with wire wool in it.
LHS picture the darker piece was coated a few times and then shellac applied. RHS shows how dark it can go. All apple wood again.

I've tried wire wool soaks, never with tea bags, that's a good one! That sumac is really beautiful too bad it's tearing. I've tried spoons a few times and the handle flying around just scares me. I have a bad tendency to lean way in when I'm working and it doesn't bode well working spoons and such. Thanks my friend!

He's hand carving. Really nice, very sharp axe and knife with home carved handles of course. Hopefully he's going to bring me back some apricot his mother has in Bulgaria when he goes over next.
Great bloke. 30 odd year old Glaswegian with ADHD helping a mutual friend out. He leaves a trail of tiny wood chips every where he goes.
Tea bags build up the tannic acid in the wood. I soaked 4 bags in hot water in one jar and then did the vinegar wire wool thing in another. Didn't follow any instructions on the net about times for soaks and how many. Just kept brushing it on. I was worried it wouldn't penetrate enough but after a really light sand with emery paper it didn't come out as bad as I thought.
To be fair I haven't really turned much so my technique needs work and chisels need sharpening. It's all a learning curve but nothing I can't cope with and I'm willing to put in the hours I need to catch up with the rest of you wood butchers on here.
