Are we really going to be smoking in 50 years?
Who's we? Vapor will surely increase in popularity but there's no way smoking will disappear completely in 50 years. Most people who read and post here don't smoke mj anymore, but not all. And plenty of people have no interest in vapor, whether it's mj or tobacco. Some of those types will definitely be around in 50 years. If you don't think so you're fooling yourself. Just as in the past when young people took up smoking cigs to be cool, in the future some will do it just because it's unpopular and frowned upon. There will always be rebels and those who prefer a good stiff dose of smoke vs. some smooth vapor.

I highly doubt it. I think if smoking is ever completely phased out, it'll take much longer than 50 years, but I honestly don't think it will ever be 100% gone. It's too easy and cheap. You can make a joint or a cig with scraps. You can't make a quality vaporizer the same way.

I think the minimum amount of time it would take for smoking to die out past 95% (of everyone who either smokes or vapes), would be however long until everyone who currently smokes, or is a child of smoking parents/has smoking friends, dies off. That way vapor will be what kids are raised seeing as the "norm", instead of just something new that is here to replace smoking.

It's kind of like saying "will anybody write and mail letters now that we have typewriters-->computers". There are a lot of people who are used to it, that will always prefer it over the newer, more efficient method.

As far as weed goes I think its a good possibility but is mostly because of hash becoming more widely available and it offers an even larger smack in the face than any bong rip out there can provide. Ecigs at least for me so far havent offered a better experience than smoking cigarettes like vaporizing has for weed.

I like how this thread shows how different backgrounds we have, but we have at least one common passion we can discuss like this :)

And notice how quickly the discussion moves forward. Everybody has something to offer to the conversation and seems willing to learn and share knowledge freely!
People here at FC will sooner re-evaluate their own opinions first, then say go after someone with a different opinion. Then refine their own opinion.
i already want to change my vote on this thread, Because of level of discussion. My newest conclusion. The first 10 years within this 50 year time-frame will be the tipping point or not.

If you ask me in 10 years, I can give you an almost certain yea/nea for the next 40. There are so many variables in play at the moment. However, I'd rather be entirely wrong and have everybody quit smoking. Like how I underestimated all the positives happening in Colorado. :peace:

I too believe we are in an important time for deciding the future now. And yes in another ten years this question will be alot easier to judge.
On a slightly different note. I realised something last night that smoking is better than vaping for 1 thing only. When you are very very angry, like i was last night, the vape does not remove the rage like a joint would. I smoked a joint for the first time in 3 weeks. Dam I'm dissapointed in myself now. Was going so well. A minor hiccup

Top tip if your giving up smoking like me. Them times you feel like smoking a joint or cig. Vape an elbow, wait ten minutes and see if you still want to smoke.
Works for me.

This isn't talking about cannabis. This is referring to cigarettes.

The smoking rate in the U.S. continues to fall, according to the latest data from Gallup-Healthways researchers.

The smoking rate was 19.7 percent in the U.S. in 2013, a drop from 21.1 percent in 2008, according to the data. The states that saw the largest improvement in smoking rates between 2008 and 2013 were Alaska (going from 25.2 percent to 18.7 percent), Rhode Island (going from 22.7 percent to 17.1 percent), North Dakota (going from 24.1 percent to 18.5 percent), Illinois (going from 22.5 percent to 18.1 percent) and Nevada (going from 24.7 percent to 20.3 percent).

The researchers also tracked the states with the highest and lowest smoking rates. The states with the lowest rates tended to be in the Northeast and West parts of the U.S., while the states with the highest rates tended to be in the Midwest and South.

Interesting!

Had to check the stats for my country, and in the general adult population the percentage of daily tobacco smokers went from 26% to 13% from 2004 to 2014. This actually includes the use of snus as well as smoked tobacco.

E cigs are not as big here as it seems to be many places yet, mainly because you can't buy nic juice over the counter, and have to buy it online from abroad.

It might be the cold weather... Can't smoke inside, won't smoke outside

Changing from smoking to vaping is a strong mental thing also.
After 40+ years of smoking....2 months ago, I bought a Haze 2.5.
I still go back and forth from my small pipe to the Haze.
I am on the fence as to if I get higher combusting or vaping the same amount of mj.
It seems the high is slightly different also.
I smoke Indica strains.

As we all know....the brain controls the brain.

Cigarettes are so addictive. My friends who work in medicine all have stories of people with lung cancer who have not been able to stop smoking. I have friends who are in a terrible state medically and would love to quit but cannot.

I have a lot of empathy for smokers who want to stop but find it horribly difficult.

Nobody quits anything because of people giving them a hard time about their habit. We need to educate and provide support for people, not just tell them that they're idiots who need to stop smoking. Shaming people is pretty pointless and cruel imo.

If you don't completely cut out the smoking cannabis from a little pipe you aren't going to get the best medicated state. You need to stop combusting cannabis for 2 - 3 weeks before you get the best benefit. Just an FYI, not being critical, trying to be helpful.:)

My father-in-law is dying from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).

He can't walk 10 feet without needing his inhaler and gasping like it's his last breath!

Yet, he still smokes... He's 86 and I think he's decided that smoking will kill him.

Perhaps for his generation, vaping is too late, luckily for ours, it isn't!

I completely agree. You can really appreciate vaping more if combustion is banished from your life. And once you get to that point, smoke doesn't seem appealing anymore. Lovely thick, milky, tasty vapour is all you will want.

My dad had COPD since he was in his mid 40s. He quit smoking cigarettes when he got pneumonia and coughing hurt too much. At 68 he quit smoking and died at the age of 79 gasping for each breath from COPD. That's why I quit combusting cannabis almost 3 years ago.

They are making it harder and harder for smokers to have any rights. I think eventually they will only be able to smoke in their own homes and yards.

How true that is! And I believe the convenience factor is starting to have an even greater impact for first time e-cig users combined with that point. Not having to carry a lighter and being able to vape outdoors during the rain and winter periods will have even that much more of an impact. If you see less cigarettes filters on the ground. Then that could be considered a tipping point, IMHO.
Sorry, but cigarette smokers tend to throw there butts on the ground even when there is a container provided to throw their nasty fiberglass filters into. Personal pet peeve aside, If you see less cigarettes filters on the ground per square yard. Then that can be used as a scientific statistic for measuring the 50 year question. :D
Although we FC-ers are on the far end of the curve and are aware of the technology that is out there. ;) Most cigarette smokers will make the change when the convenience of vaping exceeds the convenience of smoking. Virtue alone won't cut it. I'm afraid. Much like recycling. When it is cheaper and easier, the uninitiated and lazy will get on board. Which fortunately is gaining ground. Like some (I hope) are trading alcohol for MJ as an recreational outlet. :peace:

Years ago when I was 17 I had a part time job after school at a large office. That was in 1974 and was when they first started the restrictions on smoking. One day there was a large sign in the elevator stating No Smoking. The next day the elevator smelled like someone had been smoking in the elevator and the sign was taken down by someone. Eventually folks realized no smoking in elevators. You still could smoke in the offices though.

Probably about 10 years later smoking in most office buildings was not allowed either. Folks would be huddled with their coats on in the rain by doors smoking cigarettes on their breaks. Change usually starts in small increments.

I can't imagine now having people smoking in office building or elevators. people used to be able to smoke in restaurants and bars that's not allow any longer. It's only been about the last 8 - 10 years that you couldn't couldn't smoke in bars any longer. Bars were the last business that you could smoke in and some restaurants.

How insane is a smoking section inside? Smoke doesn't stay in one area.

Now they are talking about some area parks not allowing smoking. That's already is in effect in some areas.

I'm seeing much more Vapor than smoke nowadays, regarding E-Cigs though...
Everybody is rockin Box/Mechanical Mods here.

However, I don't think that 50 years is going to be enough time for it to completely disappear.

What really bothers me is...no dispensaries offer Vaporizers in their stores, yet they have loads of pipes and bongs. (Profiteering at it's finest)

One single dispensary sold 7th Floor Vapes, but I really think it was because 7th Floor's manufacturing sector was literally 2 buildings down.

On that note, this thread reminded me of this...

I can't believe I used to be able to smoke in McDonald's around children. Only ten years ago. It's insane now to think that kids parties were going on below a ceiling of second hand smoke.
