What's your favorite torch or lighter to use with the Vapcap?

Infinite realities, infinite possibilities
If you hold it upside down you can release air trough the valve, and fill it easier as the pressure is lower than the can. If you hold it normal and then release pressure you empty the butane. In every can of butane you have the butane and pressure gas. The pressure gas is lighter, floating on top of the butane, pushing it in as you fill it. That is why you hold it upside down and do not shake the can before using. With this in mind I can fill my lighters till the very top.

so how do you burp a half-full lighter? just let out air and stop if fuel starts escaping?

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Hold it upside down (fill side up) for half minute or so. Press the valve with a small screwdriver or tweezers tip. Air will escape and you should hear a difference, smell more butane and see some frosty condensation when air is gone and butane starts coming out.

Necessity to burp is very lighter dependent - and not even necessarily model dependent IME. Some models are worse than others, but can be very different from lighter to lighter. I've got some that I've burped once when I used to do it every time, and they are fine. Others will only work right if you run them all the way out, and burp before filling. Some do fine with no burping. Even if I don't burp, I usually take the lighter outside and push the regular lighter button for a few seconds without igniting the spark to do a little purge.

These days I usually only burp if they get temperamental. Issues usually show up on a less full tank, and often won't use nearly all the butane. So, you'll know to burp before refill. But, sometimes issues will show up after a fill. If this happens, do the upside down burp purge, and try to use it. I find this will usually work, and if it doesn't I have to purge the whole tank and start over. A waste of butane and kind of scary, even outside.

If you have a lighter where you can see the butane inside, keep in mind it won't fill all the way. You want a little airspace in there for it to work right. Not a good idea to fill, purge, fill purge, fill to squeeze all you can in there.

Thanks - you answered my followup questions too.

@QuittingVegas this post is for you, sorry for being such late at replying to you!

Here is my look at the stratosphere lighter, from Xikar (there is a stratosphere II replacing the model I have, with an improved lid and some fancy useless rubber design)
You can found it on Amazon or somewhere else for 20$.
Stratosphere.jpg

This lighter is a single torch, completely windproof that works at high altitude and wich come in a rubber shock proof case, with a water resistant lid, a fuel window and the flame is adjustable with an easy wheel of the bottom. There's also a rope to fix it when you're climbing a rock ah ah.

The flame is wide at his base, covering 1/3 of the cap's heating zone, resulting in less movement while heating (the back and forth movement) and I found it easier than my other single tight flame. If you set the Ti bowl to the first or second position you don't even have to move while spinning the vapcap!

The altitude feature advertised is true, I had it tested at high altitude (3200 meters) with wind and by - 15°c and I can say that it works perfectly at all times, even if it takes one minutes to heat the vapcap in that conditions, you achieve it and you can say fuck to the weather!
At this height, almost all lighters will fails, and this lighter's lid is also water resistant, awesome on the slopes!

The windproof feature is achieved with a little coil in the flame path, the coil is getting red hot but the flame stays blue, and for now there is no degradation or residue produced by this coil on my cap.
This little glowing coil also produce a little bit of light (about half of a match), wich is enough to aim correctly and heat the vapcap in a total darkness. Personally, I found this awesome!

This lighter was offered to me, in order to follow me during a hike, or on the winter on the slopes. And he's serving his purpose very well as stated before in the vapcap thread!!
All I can say is that I love this lighter and I will buy another one if this one's dead, because heating a vapcap on the roof of the world as no price)

And in this trip the best friend of my Omnivap was my special hiking torch.
Here is a little family picture on the slopes, and as you can see, even my skii are aware of the power of the vapcap!

IMG_20170112_131922_01.jpg

(sorry for the picture quality, didn't take the time to take a better one as times on the slopes are pricey ahah!)

This lighter is a beast, it works up to 3600 meters height (can confirm that it works at 3200m where my cheap torch can't), it lights up directly out of my pockets at - 15°c, and it's completely windproof thanks to a little resistive wire that keep the flame alive without changing his color, and it's even emiting some light (about half of a match) allowing you to heat the vapcap in a complete darkness.
He takes some times to heat the vapcap with it but it's windproof, the case seems sufficiently waterproof, and it works even on the top of the world, great for the slopes or for hiking in high mountains, almost made for the indestructible Omnivap!

Funny things, when you ignite this lighter, the flame produce a softer sound than a traditional torch lighter, wich sound to me like a rocket engine but quiet. Really surprising sound!

I am sold, will buy 5. Seriously, I need cold-proof lighters .

Ask here again. Does anyone have experiences with lighters from Vector? Are they worth the higher price?

I love my Vector Pyramid. Good quality. I have had several Vectors. Still have them, still working. One has been carried and used so much, (14 years), the finish is about gone, but it still works like it was new. Vectors are not disposable. Doc

Thanks a lot for this review! Do you have experiences with the lifetime warranty too? Does it work without issues?

They have some really interesting lighters in their collection. Mainly I'm interested in the quadflame insert with bigger reservoir for butane but there are some nice portables too.

I try to use it as much as possible and give it a rough treatment and if I'm happy in the end I'll do the same.

As for the cold proof side, I have to say that the lighter was in my my backpack, I don't now if the lighter can work if I let it alone outside by - 15°. In this case I think he wouldn't, because of the gas temperture.
I prefer to add that, but if you keep the lighter in your pocket or bag, it will definitely work under the snow by - 15°, and your vapcap will warm your hand for a few seconds ah ah!

Good choice @grokit. Cheap, simple & highly effective. I own three but just managed to kill two of them performing unneeded surgery on them. The only real issue I have is they are a PITA to adjust compared to "big bottom" torches but are cheap enough to replace easily. Waiting on a couple of these to land but I am hoping for the same kind of performance with easy flow adjustment.

I'm just getting the hang of using my new VapCap OG and am loving it. I bought a quad-jet Maxim torch lighter and IMO this is the weakest link in the experience. It often doesn't fire although I think it is full. How long do they typically run for on a full tank? Also, I'm not used to using fire and it can be dangerous. The other night I was already high and when it failed a couple of times I decided to sniff to check if there was still gas. I pointed the torch lighter towards my nose and pulled the trigger!!! Luckily, it didn't fire up, but imagine if it had. :mental: Hopefully I've learned my lesson but I think I need a better lighter...

There are plenty of good suggestions here in this thread. I prefer a 2 jet, but any decent jet lighter will work fine once you get the finesse of it. If you haven't yet, check this video too.

I got a triple jet flame after having used my Omnivap with a single flame honest for the first month. It is also my first "good" torch after several cheap lighters from aliexpress and cigar shops.
It is a Firebird Illume and I got it from ebay for around 40€ shipped.

colibri-firebird-illume-triple-jet-flame-lighter-wind-proof-cigar-3688-p.jpg

I really like the wide triple flame compared to the single as it seems to spread heat evenly and doesn't cause red hotspots on the cap from rotating the Omni too slowly (some friends seems unable to grasp the concept of twirling between your fingers). It's obviously quicker than the single torch but the first clicks still requires 6-7 seconds to happen.
The lighter seems well made, the tank is pretty large and the big adjustment wheel is very useful. The built in carabiner thing on the bottom is also a nice touch, I use it to clip the torch at the rim of my winter jacket inner pocket. It lights at the first try probably 95% of the times. I also bought a can of Colibrì butane to fill it instead of using the usual ultra cheap gas I feed my honests with. I'm curious to see how it will perform over time.

That looks like a really nice one. I debate on whether to get a really good one, and will have to check it out.

A tip for triple jet that gives me more even heating. Think this is another one from @Squiby , but think I've only seen it once - and it works great! Align so the two jets of the triangle of flame are oriented towards the end of the tip while heating. For me, those two are usually right at the seam of the clicky end. I like my temp right around 185C - 195C, and this method gets me there quickly.

For those of you who are cheapskates like me, the orange triple jets from China that have a similar shape have been good to me for years. Have a few and have given as gifts with VCs. Still no failures. They are everywhere, but here's where I got last batch on Amazon.

Ive got a couple of nice ones on the way. One is a Vector and the other a different Vertigo model from the one Dynavap sells. Both are triple flame which definitely seems most effect with my Omnivong so far. Will report once I get them.

I havent posted in the Vapcap forum yet since receiving mine but let me say I fucking love it!:D

I know this thread is for the vapcap. Do any of you have another butane vaporizer in addition to the vapcap and do you use the same lighter? Thinking of the bricks or in my case the daisy and lily.

And for those who have posted laying the vapcap on the lighter could you post a picture of that?

Nope. Not My idea. I have read about using the triple at a 45° angle to the cap but I don't know where it originated.

I need to try this myself. My lighters are all singles, doubles and quads. The next new lighter will be a triple.

Quads are a bit too much for me. I really like the doubles, and triples if I'm in a hurry or is windy out.

Which ones have you found easiest to fill and requiring less pressure? I have a couple that seem to require a screwdriver to open for butane and others that hurt when I press the lever.
And not a 4 flame.

I am using the 3 flame (in a line) currently being sold by dynavap. Seems good but I think my butane filling skills aren't all that yet so I can't really judge.
But is there anything (single or focused flames) that seasoned users feel are either more durable or might use less butane for only heating a vapcap. The tri-torch works quick enough but I feel like the lateral jets are kind of wasted heat as I just spin my OG with it focused in the middle of the cap. Any closer to the tip and I get combustion. I wouldn't mind an extra second or two heating if a single flame is fitting or quicker if like a quad or tri-torch would save gas by focusing.
BTW I am heating at the outer blue flame of the torch as any closer and I would definitely combust. Is that where you all heat it? Click comes a little too quick if anything for me.
I really like it so I will probably go some kind of unbreakable cap if VAS ever strikes again.
Portability and 100% on demand are unbeatable.
TIA
