I had the pleasure of beating the ever living snot out of this 1994 Defender 90 that I bought new. Most of these things were owned by your typical doctor/lawyer who considered "off road" and "valet parking" to be the same thing.
It was buried in mud, sunk in a river, rolled over on it's side, and generally abused as it was meant to be. Never once washed except to pressure wash mud and grime from the frame and mechanicals to delay the inevitable corrosion (It's British, you can't "prevent corrosion")
Eventually, after 15 years and 150k miles, it became a maintenance nightmare (although it never once left me stranded) and I sold it to some typical doctor/lawyer who was going to have it all fixed up like new and have golf bag holders installed in the back. Somewhere I guess it is living the life of luxury in retirement that I never gave it.
I replaced it with one of those fancy 4 door Jeep Wranglers in 2008. While the Wrangler is by far the much more advanced and capable vehicle due to about 50 years worth of improved technology (and a climate control system that doesn't require bags of ice in the footwells during the summer or wearing animal furs in the winter), I will always miss driving that rough old British gal.
Edit: That's a former Camel Trophy vehicle in the background that I had to pull out of this ditch since it was not set up well enough to handle the conditions that day. I did get a huge confidence boost rescuing a Camel Trophy competitor.
