What would you change on the Iolite and why?

I realize that this is an old thread, but seeing how I just purchased my iolite last week...

1) Lockable bowl. Even if it is just a J type latch that you swivel around or something. I've accidentally emptied out an entire bowl.

2) I don't have the metal tipped mouth piece yet, but I broke both my mouthpieces within 24 hours of buying it. So if the metal isn't durable enough, then a redesign of how the mouthpieces attach.

3) Black mouth piece tips. Using the white tip at a concert made me more uncomfortable than I would have been if it was black.

I still totally agree. A non-locking bowl truly reduces portability and sharing ability. A simple solution I've found is to use my girlfriend's hair tie and loop it around the stem then wrap the iOlite vertically. It works greatz@

I'm sure both the company and all owners can imagine it (except for you I guess). We all want products that last. I'm still driving a car I bought new 20 years ago, and using a microwave that's 27 years old.
I'm not sure what the point of your rebuttal is... I know this is old -- so this may be totally irrelevant now. My comment was just a side note. I own a car that I've had for 8 years now. With regular maintenance, I expect it to last longer still. I have a 10 year old microwave which still works fantastic, and I certainly expect it to last longer. No offense, but your response just sounds like "oh, you young whipper snapper, don't you know some stuff lasts a long time". Of course, we all want products that last. I don't believe the iOlite is any way high quality enough to last over 5 years, and I seriously doubt I'm the only one.

A ghetto solution for locking the bowl and adding a lanyard - pick up one of these detachable lanyard clips. Feed a loop of metal wire (looking for stainless or something equally safe) through the topmost heatsink fin and leave enough length so the clip can sit past the mouthpiece stem. Solved!

The exhaust is between fins 5 and 11, so there's a good distance from it and the wire - and it's tucked out of the way when in lock mode. Just unscrew the mouthpiece stem to unlock. Also works great to keep the iolite balanced when using a lanyard - need a lanyard mounting hole in the middle top of the unit.

YMMV but works for me. Love to hear any recommendations on a medical grade wire, even a metal alternative to the clip if one exists?

EDIT: Okeydokey a little update and some better pics

I've switched to stainless steel wire and stainless crimps. You should be able to find these at a good fishing tackle shop:

It's a bit fiddly, you'll need a steady hand and some plyers to squeeze the crimp shut. Optimal length is about 11cm ~ 4,1/4". The crimp itself is 3x2x7mm but each crimp makes two as I'm chopping them in half so the connection is small enough to fit in the lanyard clip without causing problems opening/closing it.

The only remaining issue is the lanyard clip itself is plastic - it's a good distance from the exhaust vents but close to the mouthpiece and bowl intake so I'm going to investigate a fun alternative and will post back with the results in a few days

do you need to unscrew the stem from the herb chamber to open it?
I usually need to warm mine up before i can separate those two pieces.

My point was just as I stated. Not only can I imagine an iolite lasting 5 years, I fully expect mine to do so. Of course, I often go a week without using it at all, so obviously time isn't the only factor, but it's only one you stated. It could also quit working the next time I use it, but that doesn't affect my estimation of the use I expect to get out of it. Any estimate of life span for this unit by a consumer is just a guess. My guess is based on the fact that O&B has many years of experience in producing gas powered portable tools. As for how my response sounds to you, feel free to imagine whatever you like.

Lost in Thought
I think the ONE thing I would change about the Iolite would be putting an authorized service center(s) here in the states. It makes me sad to know that it has to travel across the pond to get repairs - and thats within the warranty.

Otherwise, this is/was a tasty unit!

Yep that's the point - to lock the bowl and prevent accidental opening by newbies. I always unscrew the mouthpiece when I'm done vaping, but sounds like the stainless ones don't have this sticking issue.

While I realize this is old. I would like to request some form of reasonably priced paid repair services. I have had a few die on me after the warranty ended and was told there was nothing I could do.

I would like the ability to spark it up from an external source so if it won't spark I can force it to.
1-button "clear out all gas chambers"
I would also change Iolite's apparent treatment on warranty. IF Iolite limits warranty to "authorized" dealers, then Iolite should only sell to "authorized" dealers. Are they having tons of product stolen/sold on Ebay? Are there "imposters" out there? If not, step up and support your product regardless of the intermediary.
Possibly a slider/swich/hook to prevent inadvertent separation of main body from tube/chamber part.
