What is your main use case for a dab mat?

Personally, I don't use dab mats all that much, but before I starting using dab tool/capper holders I would mostly use them as a non stick surface that would prevent my table from getting gunked upl. I also liked that they acted as a little landing pad of sorts for my rig, but I've never had a dab rig break from setting it down too hard, so it was more decorative for me. Most people seem to be using them mostly just as a cool decoration/accessory.

Are there any other use cases that I may be missing? What is your main use case for your dab mat? What would you change about it, if anything?

As a non stick surface, the silicone mats are obviously best, but the thicker rubber mats and mousepad/like mats are better for a padded surface. I was thinking it might be useful to combine the two -- so a thicker, padded mat with a silicone top. What do you guys think?

I use them to protect my glass from stone or metal surfaces.
Or vice versa to protect my wooden surfaces from scratches from metal gear or from hot things.
I use dab mats and mood mats.

Yeah the basic mood mats are actually really nice to have a soft surface to lay glass or vapes on... If you are using a coffee table or desk? I have a few different ones different sizes now for different tables or situations, because it is also a nice way to collect artwork especially if it is a cool head shop, brand, artist, or from a heady glass worker you may not be able to afford glass from lol

Some time after that I came across the 1/4" mats from dabmats.com (carried by many other retailers) and knew I needed some for the extra protection and amazong artwork. Last week I found a sale at a place in Canada called Baked Turkey, offering buy 2 get 1 free. Now I have 6 new dab mats .

I use my neoprene DAAB mat as a mouse pad and the silicone sheets for rosin collecting and stopping stuff from falling thru the cracks in my workbench vape area.

I have a sheet of cork that i use on a stone table but neither this nor the silicone stuff are easy to keep looking clean so I have taken to cutting circular cork pads for the bubblers, that I stick underneath with a few drops of silicone gel. So I can put the glass down on a glass/stone table without a mat.
Having said that, a cleanable and good looking mat is on the menu. A combo of bamboo/cork and silicone could be the ticket

They are sold as mood mats, typically the ones that feature artwork, because it sets the mood for the session... They are usually made of some recycled material, smooth on the top for the graphics, but it is not silicone non-stick coating or a cork as far as I know

I actually don't have any from VGZ, but I do have nice ones from the Curated Flame, 710 Coils, Liz Wright, and another someone sent to me with used glass I bought from them...

I use these cork disks (there are also wooden or fabric ones) that are sold in dozens to put under glasses. You can even clean them a couple times before they fall apart.

Yes, they are, if they are the smallish ones about 8 - 12 cm in diameter, that are just right for a bottle of beer. The bigger ones suitable for a bong or vase of flowers don't really have a specific name (that I know).

Dabmats- I have covered all my work surfaces with [amazon] Greenrain XL nonstick mats, they measure slightly larger than advertised at 24" x 32". They are thick and provide excellent coverage. I mainly do this to protect my wood workbenches.

But OP may be confused by insinuating dab mats or slick mats are decorative. They are usually clear or white with VERY limited design options. I do believe he may have meant mood mats, they are both decorative and provide protection for your glass. As others mentioned, these are not sticky proof- mood mats protect glass not oil.

I like mood mats for the padding and the decorative aspect.

I love Moodmats! Still have a couple Seed of Life ones around just because they are awesome. Almost want to get one by Killeracid just for the art.

Interesting. I didn't know that there was a hard distinction in terminology. I just assumed Mood Mats were a proprietary name for their specific brand and style of dab mat. Although I do realize that the materials differ quite a bit. I have seen other products other than Moodmats that were thicker, akin to a mousepad, that were being sold as dab mats.

What do you think about the concept of combining the two? In other words, something thick like a Moodmat that protects glass, as well as a silicone surface to protect against the residue.

In my experience so far, the designs were not really that limited with silicone mats. Although I've only printed a one color design so far. What makes a Moodmat able to accommodate a wider range of design options compared to silicone?

The texture of straight silicone rubber is such that it tends to grab dirt and cannot be easily cleaned as a shinier surface can. The colourless silicone eventually discolours.

I agree that mats should be heat-resistant and soft. Many here are messing around with hot coils, it seems!

The bamboo roll mats from Japanese kitchen supplies could be good but crumbs of weed would get in between the gaps...

A silicone coating can partially peel off with time and friction, and look realy ugly. The cork substrate looks promising there as it seems to soak in the silicone gel nicely.

Cork sheet treated with silicone gel seems to come out pretty good- felt like a smoother surface than silicone mats. Messy job to DIY though!

I use Silpats for dabs and moodmats for protecting my glass, as others have said. However I need to up my moodmat game because I only have crappy vendor-branded free ones. I actually remove them when I am making a function video because they are so ugly. This thread (and the moodmat thread) are a good reminder.

I use dab matsall the time just to place my glass on. Besides it increasing the aesthetic of the area, sometimes I put my glass down a little too hard, lmao. I've been using them for the last 7 years or so and even went on to create and sell my own designed dab mats cause I believe in the purpose ,lol.
