Gear Vacuum pump discussion

I'm looking into getting a reasonably priced vacuum pump + chamber to move up in the world from my hand pumps.

pump:

gauge:

chamber:

can anyone with experience with these types of pumps tell me if this is a good setup? free shipping on everything for me with prime and costs around 240.

and if anyone has any tips to make the process a bit easier that'd be nice too! (mostly interested in hearing about the vac oil and proper way to release the chamber after it reaches the proper hg)

Hello MW,
It looks to me like you have a good deal for all your equip. You might try for a gauge that mounts right
to the port on the pump. However, it appears the vac. chamber will allow direct connect to it. The vac
oil should be plain ole mineral oil. Pretty harmless. To release the vac. on the chamber, simply open
the fitting to allow atmosphere to enter. The chamber is rated to hold a vacuum for 24 hrs. even if
the pump is off. That is a good sign. Best of luck with your new gear.....

Hello Craig, there is no such thing as absolute vacuum (-30 hg). The chamber you have looks
like it will fit the bill just fine. If you really want to get technical about vac. depth, a micron gauge
will give a more accurate reading. That is not needed for vac purging IMO. The idea is to lower
the atmosphere to the point that residual solvent boils off. I am not a scientist, but if you are
pulling -28 based on the gauge supplied w/ your kit, that should be plenty. A reheat after a vac.
purge is always good to re-liquify the extract and free up any residual solvent. Good luck, and
be safe....

Check out the chamber MW has in his post above, this is more technically suited to deep vacuum.
Your system is a little more caveman, but it will achieve the results you seek.....

Hey - i just recently purchased a vacuum pump, a 2stage 3cfm pump.It was guaranteed to pull -29.9HG but i can only get -28 out of it at best. Does anybody have any suggestions for increasing your vacuum pressure?

Here is the vacuum pump and chamer i own. --> http://www.ebay.ca/itm/3-Gallon-Vac.../140803249693?pt=BI_Pumps&hash=item20c887161d

thanks for any help!

I would leak check everything under pressure. That vacuum pump should be able to pull down to 29.9 fairly easily on a chamber that size barring any leaks. How long did you vaccuum for? Do you know your vac gauge is accurate I use a digital guage that measures in microns also, but I use mine for then just oil. -28 should be good for oil though

Puffers,
Thanks for your information guys. It appears to be leaking from my release valve when under pressure, so i'm going to try to find a cap for it when vacuuming.

The main reason I asked the question is because i can't seem to get all the butane out of my oils, even with purging with molten oil (turning it molten by putting it on parchment paper floating on boiling water) at -28hg for atleast 6 sessions of 30 minutes. I'm hoping it's the leak that's causing this, when i figure it out i'll repost here. Any tips are welcomed in my inbox! Thank you!

This message could be cross-posted to the purging thread, but since it does have to do with the mechanical portion of the process i'll keep it in this thread.
