using concentrates in your mflb.

So I have seen one of our local concentrate enthusiasts talking about using our beloved mflb to vaporize concentrates.

Now I have always heard from mf that the box was not designed for concentrates and they did not recommend it. I happen to have a spare box and I decided I might as well try this out!

He described the process as this:
place a small dab of oil in the back corner of the box. this part of the screen will clog up from the oil. When you heat it up it seems to keep on vapin regardless.

I used the glass stem as per stro's recommendation so that you can reclaim more easily.

So i tried it and by George it works a treat! 2 small dabs and I am flying right now! it wasn't messy either. quite tasty also i might add!

This thread is really a tribute to the discovery that stroh has made!

*edit, I would also like to point out that mflb has said that they have plans to release a concentrate pad type innovation so that we can vape our concentrates the MF approved way too!

i have been reluctant in the past to truly recommend my "launch pad" method since many box enthusiasts have yet to experience the wonderful world of concentrates, those that have are usually weary to risk dirtying up their beloved box which is completely understandable, and also that magic-flight themselves do not recommend using concentrates in the launch box.

that being said, the LB is truly an amazing concentrate vaporizing machine! the famed efficiency of the launch box is perfectly suited for getting the most effect out of your concentrates, a couple dabs will have me flying , pair this with the incredible taste delivered and you have yourself a serious contender for vaping oils and waxes (i feel that hash other than full melt bubble should be avoided, as should ISO oils and second and third run BHO, as this leaves behind more residue that just BHO).

i simply use a little ISO every once in awhile to wipe away any excess residues and to keep the trench neat, and the ability to vape flowers is not affected much or at all(i personally cannot notice a difference), though you may wanna wipe it down with ISO in between transitions from flowers to oils, as the launch pad can remain a bit sticky afterwards.

anyways, for those interested in this method, simply designate a back corner of your trench to be used for vaping oils, and try and keep it neat and within the confines. When the oil melts and bubbles up, it will usually stick within the confines of the residued area unless you really plop a fat dab in there. Use a very slow draw, you want as much heat as possible to quickly start vaporizing the oil, don't even worry about combusting it, its pretty difficult to do. The oil will first start to melt and bubble, and then you will see a bunch of vapor start forming, keep drawing until it stops, though this can be awhile. also subsequent "dry hits" of the box will actually yield more vapor, as some of the oil remains unvaped on the screen (this is the residue) and can be hit a few more times before the vapor becomes insignificant. As long as you are neat and don't over do it, your "launch pad" will not increase in circumference.

as you can see the overall clogged area is directly under the air intake, reducing any chance of it affecting the draw, and is quite minimal compared to the overall size of the trench

remember if you use this method that this WILL CLOG PART OF YOUR SCREEN PERMANENTLY, so do not attempt if you can't stand dirtying up your precious box. i on the other hand feel that the benefits far outweigh any negatives, and until Magic-Flight releases it's concentrate pad, this IMO is a perfectly viable way to get concentrated at home or on the go.

so far not significantly other than when i am trying to vape the very last of the oil with my PA on full blast and my draw rate at a crawl, though i think cleaning with ISO every so often helps in that aspect.

I have vaped concentrates in my MFLB several times and dont notice any off flavors as a result. I often do try to at least lie down a bed of bud/abv when vaping concentrates so that way it kind of mixes with the herb and not entirely into the screen.

this is the way i used to smoke my oil, on top of a fat trench of flowers so it can soak in. this lessens the chance of any smudging on your screen, but i love the pure oil hits for the exquisite taste and powerful punch

I smoke concentrates out of my LB from time to time... i make a "boat" to hold my concentrates... boat can be used for just about anything your launch box cant be... here's how i make the boat...

1. Take 1/4 (orange zig-zag)paper

2. Fold in half long ways like a hot dog bun

3. Fold Side edges up to Top edges

4. Pinch and Twist the tips of the top corners

5. Open Boat and tuck Twists out of the way

6. Boat usually fits perfectly w/ little room
7. Put Dab in boat and heat level...Enjoy...

Note: Dab conservatively, leave room for expansion... Also the boat can be reused until flavor is an issue... as long as it doesn't break... it gets brittle very fast...

I haven't tried any oil dabs out of my LB yet, but I do vape straight kief(a natural concentrate) in it all the time. And is actually what I prefer my LB for. I save the kief from my sift box and dump a trench load in whenever insomnia strikes me. I've found this really helps to put me down for the night, which some nights I need or else I will stay up for a day or day and a half, and my job just can't allow my body to do that. Feel like I've seen the cotton & oil method used with the LB, and I'm pretty sure I tried that at one point, but even for a guy who's not big on cleaning my LB, I never wanted to risk/try putting straight oil on the screen. Thanks for sharing your technique!

Kief works out awesome... i never herd of the cotton method for the LB but i heard something similar for the iolite and E liquid(glycerin??) type stuff... how did that work out, from what you saw?
I'm not willing to put my oil on the screen either, but i do keep my LB pretty clean, even if i didn't though...
i learned to use papers this way in the bong... originally to smoke resin haha.. years ago a friend taught me... he might have heard about it somewhere but i think he just tried it and realized it worked out... just wrap up in a paper and burn, the bottom of the paper won't burn and it will keep it (mostly) from running through the bowl. I hope you can get use out of this.. i like it...

ive smoked some hash out of my mflb before. i break it up into tiny pieces (as atiny as possible) and mix it up with flowers.

you mite need to use half a zig zag and double up if little bits soak through... usually if it does its very minimal and clean because it was filtered through the paper first... even when it does its not a big deal at all.. also about the size of a BB is max id say... usually use about that or half of that

ALSO i would recommend not using batteries... they work they just take too long and get too weak too fast... use the PA... if you don't vape it hot enough it will soak through the paper a little bit... the only time that has ever happened to me was w/ batteries that were too weak and used longer than a couple mins... W/ the PA i have never had to double up... i usually use it at ~70%... if you have some of the new batteries those work much better.. the lower the power the further the oil goes in the LB.. too low of power for too long though and it will soak through. i usually use a half BB size or less at a time... pretty much needs to b hot enough that its vaping fast enough to not soak through the paper... and if not then it needs to b small enough amounts to finish in a short amount of time w/ that low of heat...
