Toxic material in portable vaporizers?

I've been researching portable vaporizers for the past few hours now. The potential toxicity of the materials used is a topic that gets mentioned seldom. A few discussions are floating around here and there, but there's no definite source of info. The general gist is that you shouldn't buy cheaply made knock-offs (which is obvious IMO and not super helpful).

The safest vapes my research has turned up so far :science: :

1) Arizer Solo - Oven is ceramic (though, there were a few reports of this coating peeling)
2) Ploom Pax - Pathway is stainless steal (assume oven is as well)
3) Magic Flight Box - Their website is pretty vague about the material of each specific part, but they say they use steel and no bonding chemicals.

What do you guys think is the most non-toxic portable vaporizer?

Might I suggest you look into the Cera by Thermo-Essence Technologies. Its made almost entirely from structural ceramic, everything is medical grade. If you are looking for purity in a portable, these guys are it. I highly recommend you check out their videos :)

http://www.youtube.com/user/thermovape

You've Never Seen a Ceramic Like this Before...
The primary components of the Cera are made entirely from a cutting edge ceramic material that has exceptional purity, and outstanding durability. For example, the ceramic in the Cera has a service or operating temperature over 3500 degrees Fahrenheit. Compare this to that of a high grade boro-silicate glass, which melts at half of that temperature. The ceramic undergoes a three step forming and finishing process resulting in precise, high-toleranced parts that are consistently within tens of microns, or less than one thousandth of an inch. We understand that for many years glass was considered the gold standard for vaporizers, please note that our ceramic's melting temperature far exceeds that of glass, and it is orders of magnitude stronger. As a result we offer a device that is not only equal to glass in terms of it's purity, but vastly superior to glass in it's durability. We chose this material because it goes beyond unparalleled purity, it provides peace of mind.
This medical device grade, FDA approved, and American sourced ceramic is an amazing insulator, virtually impossible to stain, and about 10 times stronger then the average coffee cup.

that's exactly why i make my own vape. sometimes i'm a no-compromise guy -- but particularly when it is so damn easy to do it "right".

Arizer had problems with chipping ceramic and a horrible odour/taste with early models of the Solo.

The Pax pathway is all stainless steel except for the exit point, which is plastic and adds a slight taste.

Magic-Flight is quite specific about their materials. I'm not sure where you find the information on their website these days, but it's in the Vaporedia entry: What materials are used to make the Launch Box?

I don't agree at all that the potential toxicity of materials is seldom mentioned. It is almost always one of the first questions discussed about any new vapourizer mentioned here, portable or not.

I don't believe there is anything toxic about my MFLB. I don't like the change in taste from my Pax mouthpiece but I don't think it is toxic. If you want certainty, get the Ubie.

The safest... ...non-toxic portable vaporizer?

From a pool of pictures i'd pick:

Vaponic (VapBong)
The Lotus
The Supreme
In that order, with the most obvious air/vapour path on top. No batteries for me unless there's strict protection at the power delivery level...

Vapman & FlashVape are two recent additions to my collection, and both offer a clean air path.

My guess would be the cera as the safest portable. I can tell you from experience however that IMO and experience Davinici is the least safe of them all. I have 2 units from different batches 6 months apart that both off-gas.

Arizer solo bowls are not even made of ceramic anymore, there stainless steel. i feel its a prety safe design, but the brown material(forgot the name) worries me somewhat as the hot stainless stell bowl its against it. My MFLB seems pretty safe to me. Just a small wood taste, but no chemicals/plastic so im not worried about it at all. When i was checking out the flashvape thread it also look safe to me, but looks kinda odd IMO. I think i may be saving up for a Cera, but not sure yet.

the safest IMO are the all glass like vaponic, gn0me, vapocane and ubie.

Then you have the Thermovape vaporizers which also have purity of materials as one of the priorities.

the solo or the pax, compared to an all glass airpath, are a joke IMO. Even if there is only stainless steel or ceramic in the airpath, the difference in taste is small but its there.

That said, the market nowadays has very safe options without the need to get to caught up in purity obsessions.

So would you by the same token dismiss the (IMO obviously superior) taste of the cloud or vriptech simply because it has ss? I don't think ss or ceramic really give off flavor. Maybe what you are tasting is coming from somewhere else in the airpath.

Euh...

Hasn't there been any set of pictures posted already which shows in detail what's immediately UNDER the Arizer Solo "bowl", EXACTLY???

What would a Solo owner find if not high-temperature GLUE, right there, in contact with the air/vapour path!?... I wonder.

Well, actually some people have reported some taste from the ELBs. Not sure about VRIP because i don't know where is the metal in that vaporizer.. i don't think there is any.

And SS gives off flavour, that much i know. Ceramic i don't know but i heard people here at FC saying they can tell the difference between an exposed ceramic element+glass VS an all glass airpath, if im not mistaken it was stonemonkey55 so i take his word for it.

Plus, from all my vapes, the gn0me gives the best taste IMO. And i have tried my buddha without the whip which is glass+ceramic.

I would not dismiss them though.. the OP was asking about safe materials in the airpath. I would get a Cloud or a VRIP right now if i had the funds to spare.

Ya i should have said dismiss the taste as not superior. The vrip actually does have a ss screen in the bowl unless you have a custom blazemaster or something like it. My main point is that I don't notice any taste from the ss that is actually metallic or anything. The only way I see a ss screen messing with the flavor is by letting little pieces stick to it and get hotter. Perhaps there is some difference between an exposed ceramic and all glass(besides ss). That's all I've tried tho besides when I was duped into buying an essentialvape because it said it worked with herbs. That didn't taste very good, it was all glass tho.

Just so you know the ceramic is long gone on the solo. You might still come across that "robot fart" smell everyone talks about. It's the same smell I get when I open any electronic device that was package very quickly after production. Guitar pedals, computer hardware.. ya know its that plastic smell. I never had that issue with either of my solo's but it is mentioned fairly often around here.

If you have a link to those pictures i would love to see it, i've taken a solo apart quite far, but i have never taken the bowl out I've head once you knock your heater-sensors out of place, its imposible to get them back?

Lets suppose there's some sort of ciment sealing, my guess is you'd need some amount of that very same material to perform a proper repair under the suitable conditions, eventually.

Just search the Solo thread, IIRC it was in the first 50 pages but don't take my word for it. Maybe someone in the thread remembers it though.

What i recall is that, bellow the bowl, there is a pcb and on one of the sides there's the battery. There was also some kind of glue to keep some stuff in place but the final conclusion was that the air did not go in contact with the electric parts.

It just followed the path of least resistance, through the air vents in the top cap and then it entered the bowl where it heated and then down the stem. Pretty much uneventfull.

I still notice the SS taste though, very faintly, and after the flavours dissipate. The ceramic bowl had no smell according to the ones who tried both.

I can't really tell the difference in my WW or my buddha for example.. like i do in the Solo, but i do feel the superior taste of the gn0me. When we compare these three, we are pretty much splitting hairs at this point.
I can taste the whip in my buddha after the terpenes dissipate as well, but i can bypass that if i use only the wand.

Glass and ceramic seem the most inert materials when it comes to smell, then Stainless steel. I don't know where to put plastics because it depends on it's type and quality but usually it is bellow SS imo.

The simpler designs usually mean cleaner airpaths, e.g. 7th floor products. If you want something as clean as the gn0me or the vapocane but with better temperature control, you immediately go to something like the Cloud, VHW or MiniVap.

Unless you have the funds for such investments (the VHW is not as expensive but due to its fragility it will eventually be. ), i suggest you reach a compromise option like an LSV or a log vape which have excelent flavour profile and complement that with a gn0me or a vapocane.
