I just finished watching the morning news. They had footage of Tuscloosa, Alabama. Holy shit. I'm so glad these storms lost a little steam before hitting Michigan a few days ago.

Doesn't it seem like the storms, hurricanes, tsunamis, etc. are getting stronger? It's so scary.

Edited to add: Just heard the death toll is up to 198 and rising. People had advance warning and this many still died. It came on so fast. It's just chilling.

I think the real scary part about all these tornadoes lately is the fact that it is just the beginning of the season for them. This is only the start.

very scary.
mr. herbgirl and my dad just finished up repairing the tornado damage from the one that hit the house i grew up in in November. Ripped their freestanding garage roof off and damaged shingles, siding & doors trees down etc. and it was only an EF 2. Funny part is, when my dad built that garage 20 years ago, his friends teased him for using hurricane strapping on the roof. The part of Maryland we live in isn't exactly tornado country, but my Dad is a 'be prepared for anything' type fellow. It paid off - that roof was barely hanging on and likely would have been blown smack dab into the neighbor's front door had it not been well secured like it was.

There is currently a Tornado watch in my metro area until three. i understand these storms were so quick, people really had no chance. I am alert to this as I live on the water and we are also getting some coastal flooding in addition to all the rain and wind. There were whitecaps in our lagoon & creek last night and that rarely happens.

Death toll now 273 and rising. Still looking at the destruction. Some of these vids look every bit as devastating as the tsunami's in Japan.

lwien, as I looked at the pictures on line and news today, I had the same thought. I feel so badly for all the people affected by this.

i don't think i could hold it together reporting from there

saw a news guy in front of a vast field of wreckage, and just couldn't help thinking there were people dead in that field

The strong storms we get here are amazing to watch sweep over the water because we sit on the western shore of the bay. one of mr. herbgirl's hobbies is lightning photography so we are weather nerds too. We were monitoring these cells and the hook echos on these things were huge. these storms were unprecedented in the meteorological/stormchasing community.

The air seemed to be charged this morning when I went out to check the pepper plants, it was eerie, like your body's molecules were being pulled in the direction of the storm - i just stopped and felt it for a moment, i was caught of guard. I know that sounds weird, but hubby says the last time he experienced that was just before a southern tornado.

I have not watched any of the vids yet, don't know if i really want to - i'd be thinking the same thing about the victims.

I did find a cool facebook page though, a ray of sunshine through all this tragedy.

wouldn't it be cool if everything found it back to it's owner?

isn't social media awesome?

Out to lunch
We got hit by the previous storm, that started in OK and hit NC the worst. Nothing like the destruction and loss of life in Alabama the other day, but we're still without phone and cable svc. two weeks later (power was restored in 3 days), and a lot of our neighbors have had to move out of their houses, due to damage, and some homes are just waiting to be bulldozed.
