Post the film you are watching today... old and new, good and bad, it doesn't matter, but say why you like or don't like it

I'll start:

Contact - 1997

I like the film it's a great story even if it is a bit cheesy in places, and well... Jodie Foster

Alas, those summer days seem to be behind us already here; grey and miserable this evening...

So tonight's film is:

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 1977

Yes, there's a theme here hehe, but w00000t ... 1977?? I mean come on - get outta here!!

Brilliant film, really stands up to the test of time, cracking story, the special effects are actually quite good in places and of course the sound track is ace - who knew John Williams had a top 20 hit in 1978 with the theme tune?

Anyway, here's the trailer - just awesome!!

I only saw the movie when it first came out. It did inspire me to visit Devil’s Tower in 2014 though.

Gone Girl is such a disturbing film, in many ways, if only it was total fantasy... Alas, they walk among us!

is this thing on?
Funny, Gone Girl is the next movie on our list, last one was rewatching Panic Room. Fincher has some great skills!

"When you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you".

Yep, continuing the theme of 'first contact', tonights film is... The Abyss.

It is pretty much 'Close Encounters' but underwater - I love underwater films, anything with submarines is cool right? All those control panels, the intense pressure, the ping of the sonar... all that *and* aliens? What's not to love?

The special effects are really very good, and so many of them paved the way for so many films that came later... it's stunning - even now 30+ years later in 2021!

No film for me today, spent the evening drinking home brew with a friend, sat in the porch, listening to tunes, vaping some cbd, eating home baked pizza and talking shit

edit: just seen it's after 2am haha what a great evening 😂

Today's film is another 'first contact' film, but a very different take:

In space no one can hear you scream.

Yep - it's Alien :whoa:

1979 - over 40 years old and still absolutely untouchable!

I don't think I need to say any more, it's an incredible film and Sigourney Weaver is amazing

The penultimate 'first contact' film in this little series and one of my absolute favourites...

Tonight's film is Arrival - 2016

Not just a great story, fantastic special effects and a stunning film score by Jóhann Jóhannsson, may he rest in peace, but a wonderful exploration of the nature of linearity and non-linearity in language and how we relate to time.

Brilliant film - highly recommended!

p.s., can anyone guess what the final 'first contact' film will be?

I just started watching the new The Suicide Squad (2021) movie with my dinner tonight.
Hopefully this new version is better than the last one from a few years ago. We'll see...

Dave,

the last film in this little 'first contact' series will be...

2001 - 1968

Almost every frame is a work of art!

It's stunning, a great story, seriously creepy sound track, it is just super weird and also a great philosophical conundrum! What's not to like?

"Open the pod bay doors Hal" 🙄

The Nanny - Bette Davis, 1965. From England's "Hammer Collection". I 1st saw it when it came out. This film came after Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? and Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. Not as good as the earlier two films. I ordered it from Amazon as an import from England..

“Hell yeah!” or “I don’t think so”
my best stoner guess

I'd say on a 1-10, I'd give it somewhere around a 6.

It's definitely worth a watch if you enjoy action/comedy superhero stuff that has been becoming more popular lately. I know I do.

They did a bettor job with it than the Suicide Squad movie that came out several years ago.

It had enough cheese, but also had action-porn that was fun. It also had better character development than I was expecting for this type of film. The movie was in the realm of the absurd, but it did a pretty good job of making sure that you were aware that it intended to be absurd that you could more easily suspend reality enough to enjoy the action and comedy for what it was.

All in all, It's a fun run for when you're looking for comic book action and comedy, without wanting something too serious. I'd recommend it.

And the CGI was actually really good!

Today's selection from me is "Dougal and the Blue Cat"

This is a film you have to watch at least three times... Once drunk, once stoned, and once sober. It makes no difference which order you watch it in, because the first two times you'll always wonder if it'll make more sense if you're in the "state of being" you haven't yet chosen...

Originally French (their dog is named Pollux), the English script was written by Eric Thompson (yes, Emma Thompson's dad). He also narrates and voices all of the characters, except for the "Blue voice", which is voiced by the fabulous Fenella Fielding. (Most people know her from "Carry on Screaming").

Synopsis: Dougal the dog must defend the Beautiful Wood against an evil infiltrator, who has a seemingly charming disguise but plans to take over everything.

Watch it, it's insane!

And remember, "Blue is beautiful, blue is best. I'm blue, I'm beautiful, I'm best!"
