I don't know how many of you have heard about this, but I'll tell ya this. Jon Stewart must be kicking down the fucking walls about now. He's off the air because they're setting their show up at the Conventions, so he won't be on till then, but..............this story is soooooo much foder for him to use on the show, but he's gotta wait till it's no longer new news. It would make for a REALLY FUNNY show. He AND his writers must be going fucking bonkers.

For those that don't know about this, this guy Aikin said about the dumbest thing I have ever heard from a Senator, and both sides of the isle wanna crucify him, but for different reasons......kinda. lol

I watched the video, but don't really get the controversy... sure, he is against abortion, wich I disagree with, but I thought most americans were against abortion, this sounds like what I would expect the average US politician to sound like(or here in the netherlands, a member of the SGP, our most radical christian party)

The issue is not really abortion in this case. It has to do with his views on what constitutes rape, and the term he used, 'legitimate rape', implying that there are 'illegitimate rapes'. He also made a comment basically saying that women have a magical automated defense mechanism that keeps them from getting pregnant from rape. Something about 'having a way to shut that whole thing down'. It's staggeringly ignorant and laughably ridiculous.

And it also kind of gives an insight into how the Christian Conservative Right REALLY feel and think. While Romney and Ryan jumped on this rather quickly, I believe they did so, not because he really felt that it was wrong, but rather that it would hurt his election efforts if people believed that that's how he really felt.

And I think that this could very well do a LOT of damage to their election efforts............especially with women and it REALLY shines a light on why ANY panel exclusively made up of men should have the right to pass laws in regards to women's sexual health issues, be it abortion, birth control or anything else, either on a national or a state level.

It just further shows how "anti-science" this party has become, from this issue, to global warming to evolution. The Republican Party never used to be this way. They were hijacked many years ago, but maybe issues such as this that shines a light on a party that is behind the times and that would rather we live in the Victorian age, will finally wake up and realize that they need to change or continue down the path of become their own relic.

While I have always been a Liberal, I used to hold the Republican Party in very high regard. While I disagreed with many of their policies, I respected those differences. Sadly, they have morphed into something else. The Tea Party's chant was, "We need to take our government back". The Republican Party's chant SHOULD be, "We need to take our party back."

Yeah, but it's also about abortion, for he believes that abortion should be illegal, even in the case of rape. What's funny about this, is that Ryan felt this way as well, that is, until this issue came to light.

This is a no-win for the Romeny/Ryan ticket. They had to stand up and disagree with Akin, but in so doing, and clearly stating that they believe that abortion SHOULD be legal in the case of rape, they have just alienated, and no doubt, pissed off many on the Christian Conservative Right, which again, to my way of thinking, goes a long way in the Republicans taking their party back.............at least I hope so.

If the Republicans lose this election, it could very well cause them to do this... and exclaim, "What in the hell have we become?"

I agree, but women aren't pissed about his abortion stance so much as his ignorant remarks about rape. Saying there are "legitimate" cases, and a woman "can turn that off" in such cases is what really pisses me off. How stupid can a person be to even believe something like that?

Yeah, Ryan co-sponsored a bill with Akin regarding this very thing. Notice how he stayed silent when Romney was putting down Akin's remarks?

Because politicians believe that announcing that they oppose abortion wins votes. "Pro-choice" candidates hold the same belief, but nobody says "pro-abortion". These politicians hire expensive polling firms to tell them whether highlighting such platform positions work, so I guess they do.

While I agree that the economic issues are wayyyy more important at this point in time, for many, the social issues can have a very big impact as well.

What's also true is that the Republicans very much do NOT want to talk about these social issues, no so much because they feel that the economic issues are more important, but that they feel that they have valid issues to raise regarding the economy, and that their stance on social issues WOULD hurt their chances of garnering the Independent voters.

And of course, the Democrats are going to try and capitalize on this. It's the way the system works.

But I do think that this abortion chatter and Akin's statements will die down in a fairly short period of time.

ofcourse it's ignorant and ridiculous, but that's what I expect from christian conservative US politicians(aklso from our own dutch christian extremists, but luckily we have less of them. ours prohibited women on their electable people list for a long time untill they were forced to open it up for women, in court I believe, a few years back or so), and so it doesn't really surprise me, and I thought this kind of ignorance was so common that it wouldn't create a controversy

It is common, but thank God we haven't got complacent about it. The problem is, is that here in the US, these guys, who were once considered extremists and on the far right fringe, are now mainstream Republicans. And if the Democrats can keep these social issues in the forefront, it could become the Republicans undoing when it comes to swaying the Independent voter, which either candidate needs to have to win.

I just find it insane that a grown , educated man could not understand that sperm + egg = pregancy , regardless of the circumstance. My friends 7 year old knows how the human reproductive system works better than some of the people in office.
