So I've been going to the VA for years now. Have had multiple general blood panels taken during a physical.........no problems, but I just came back from the VA today where I had my most recent physical. Had a general fasting blood test done the week prior. When i sat down with my Doc today, she was going over the results and then asked me, "So you use marijuana?". I was kinda in shock. I asked if that showed up on the blood test and she said yes. I had no idea that they tested for drugs. They never did before. She said I tested negative for cocaine and meth. She asked if I used MJ recreationally or for medical issues. I was so surprised, I said both. She smiled and said that she'll just note that I use it medically and being that it is legal in Cali, it doesn't pose a problem as far as the VA is concerned, but I did feel a bit violated. I had no idea that they were going to do that.
So, a heads up. If you're a vet and you go in for routine blood work, they very well may run a drug panel.
