You can see the size and material difference between your average atomizer and the splinter+stem right? The splinter looks nearly twice as thick as most atomizers I've seen and is at least twice as long w/ the stem.

The average box-mod fits easily in the pocket, the splinter looks too big to comfortably pocket even without the stem, then you also have to transport and load the stem. I couldn't see myself using it anywhere but at home. Certainly not out in public.

I've held the prototype. I took it to an e-cig store when I went to buy a box mod. It did not look particularly different from some of the configurations they had. The stem does make it taller but in my opinion, still not terribly unusual. I agree that it's not particularly pocket-friendly. That's mostly due to the stem, which has other issues as well. To carry it in a pocket, you need a stem that you can cap somehow and there's still the issue of assembly before use. All of these issues can be remedied but the Splinter will never be a stealth device along the lines of, say, the MFLB.

The e-cig store guy was enthusiastic about it. He said that he gets inquiries about such a device all the time. He didn't seem to think the form factor or size mattered much.

Looks/fits better on this larger, dual battery Tesla 160TC mod in my opinion.

I also asked for a shorter mouthpiece (shorter than this one) so I'll test it out and be back with some thoughts.

Did they already start sending out production versions of the Splinter or is that a Beta version you're playing with?

Have you (or @KeroZen) ever done a Google image search for "box mod"? At least a third of them share the same "a[k]ward silly form factor".

Well, since last year or a tad more, there has been a new development in the e-cig world, the so-called "side by side" design trend (SBS for short)

I've already a made a quick "tour of the horizon" post in the Divine Tribe and Project threads, so instead of cross-posting again I will just link to it:

http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/the-project-diy-herbal-vaporizer.21055/page-43#post-1129674

For those curious enough you can even read the original ECF forum thread and see how it evolved. But the idea is to gain height by having the attachment lower "inside" the mod (L shaped vs box shaped) and it's in my opinion so much better.

The drawback is that currently these devices can only accept 22mm to 23.5mm MAX attachment diameters. It should be also noted that the same applies for the Eleaf Pico which is by far the most popular device of past year, and the Splinter will not be compatible with it (it's not SBS but the battery cap is right next to the atty and limits the space)

Another trend in the e-cig world was the move from long and thin mouthpieces to the so-called "wide bore drip tips". This again reduced the overall height of their devices, unfortunately it's something we can't really afford as we need a decent amount of cooling, our vapors being way hotter than theirs. But this brings me to my first question(s): how hot is the vapor with the stock stem? Same as Milaana? Better?

Bonus question: seeing I find my Milaana stock stem at the very edge of what my throat can support in terms of heat and comfort (cooling with the stock stem is just barely adequate but clearly not more and for some users it's already too harsh) are you sure @Other Side that it's a good idea to ask for an even shorter one?!!

Then ultimate (yet deal-breaker for now) question that nobody but Ryan will be able to answer: I might want to order one at some point, why no international shipping? It's not even an electronic device per se, it has no battery and is not stand-alone... If the box says clearly that it should not be used with tobacco products, then there's practically nothing to certify, just slap the CE mark and the garbage bin logo somewhere on it (the 510 base?) and keep your source materials certificates at hand (for RoHS compliance) Should be good enough for the EU market.

I'll check with Ryan on the international shipping.

As for the short stem, well I want to try it. I and sure this won't be for everyone have a pretty good tolerance for heat and I know how to draw to avoid the brunt of it on my throat. I'll keep you posted.

Spoke to Ryan about international shipping. He said he would be open to it after the beta testing is done and pre-orders are out.

Edit:. Ok did a couple loads. Used both stems. You can tell the difference and I feel most would be more comfortable with the longer stem, but you can easily get away with the shorty.

I'm not going to say much more about the performance until I get a bit more time with it but I will say this........

I can appreciate the folks looking to make this super stealth and blend it in with the ecig products currently out there. After all it is being powered by an ultra cheap and easy accessible battery that has gained mainstream acceptance.

Personally I'm looking at it a little different. I look at this as a relatively inexpensive way to get into a regulated "Zion like" device. I paid under $37 for that Tesla mod on FastTech so with the Splinter being $109 you are under $150 total! I haven't used this enough to compare it deeply to anything else in my collection but I have used enough after only a couple sessions to know that this is feeling like an excellent value (I too paid for mine if you were wondering).

I use the Milaana daily while out of the house and this didn't feel much different in overall size (I'll get some comparison pics up later) so I don't think I'll have any reservations using the Splinter while out. However this is regulated and that in itself is a significant advantage over the Milaana so I'm interested to see if this overtakes my out of the house vape or will I stick with ny old standby?

More later.....

Hey all!

Here is a video using the splinter with the stock stem and a small piece of silicone for a DIY WPA through a stereo matrix with an ABV shot at the end.

Nice video @Vape Dr. Really nice multitasking half way through that vid also. It's looking like that splinter is really doing a great job at evenly extracting the material also. I'm liking the looks of this thing more and more.

cui bono?
I pulled the trigger on a pre-order Splinter the other day. I'm thinking it will be the perfect 'home portable' for when I don't feel like using the logs but want a lung-busting amount of mindless (regulated) on-demand vapor. This could be my dinner prep sidekick. I don't like using the FW4 with wet/dirty hands (too pretty!) but a Box Mod I don't really mind fucking up.

Really looking forward to receiving this one!!

Yes and I think 60W is overkill when in VW mode (compared to TC) The Tubo can afford to run at 70W+ only because it is in TC mode and automatically throttles the power down to match the demand, so it's seeing 70W only during the ramp-up phase.

With 60W you must be pulsing the trigger way more than the Milaana and it's putting un-necessary strain on the cells (I made at least 3 different posts about the matter, it's I think for instance too much for the HG2/30Q/VTC6 as the drain on the cell with rise with dropping voltage and you will exceed the 18A continuous discharge rate)

The idea with VW is to find your sweet spot, and Dan nailed it perfectly in the Nomad by providing lower power heaters. If you find the right power setting that matches your draw style (i.e. flow rate) then you can reach equilibrium: temperature will stay constant and you won't have to pulse the trigger it's always on (= way easier to use, nothing to count or think about, just hit and draw)

Anyways, as @Other Side said above, the cell is the bottleneck not the mod. If your mod can output 80W it doesn't mean your cell can (despite the builtin protections in the mod to try to prevent such user errors)

Well...after about a week of beta testing i have concluded the Splinter kicks ass. Vape Dr has been doing such a good job putting out some videos i haven't got around to shooting any myself yet.

All the power you could ever want, pure convection, regulated, great battery life, discrete forum factor, and made in the US.

For anyone on the fence i think this vape is almost ready for primetime and if you already have a mod it is a flat out steal at just over $100
