After more than a year of fierce design and development in our Colorado workshops, High Plains Research is preparing to build the very first production units of the Puffin Classic: a high quality, US-made cannabis vaporizer designed for use with shatter, wax, and other cannabis concentrates.

Puffin Classic Specifications
Dimensions: 4.5” x 7/8”
Chassis: Aluminum
Mouthpiece & cover: Glass (removable, drip tip compatible)
Atomizer: Ceramic with Inconel 28 AWG coil & SS wick, apx. 1.3 ohm
Battery: Efest 18350 3.7V 800mAh http://www.efestpower.com/Product/9285605732.html
Processor: Atmel Mega 8mHz
Charge: microUSB

Puffin Features:

>Our modular conduction atomizer is made for wax, shatter, and concentrates.

Our atomizer consists of a heavy coil and wick in a ceramic surround, which can be removed and cleaned in alcohol. The 28 gauge coil is durable, and the stainless steel wick can be removed and replaced. The atomizer is manufactured at our Colorado cottage factory.

>LED light themes, stealth option.

Puffin has two LED indicators, on the side, and on the end of the chassis; these give visual feedback that tell you what Puffin is doing— on/off, connecting, locked, etc. Through the Puffin application, the user can select from a variety of lighting themes, or a low visibility stealth setting.

>Puffin PassLock acts like a key to prevent unauthorized use.

The PassLock is a small key which inserts into the micro USB connector. The locking feature is enabled via the Puffin application during initial setup, and can be disabled in the same manner (default state is disabled). When the PassLock feature is enabled, Puffin will not function unless the key is present. This feature prevents the unauthorized use of your Puffin by minors, room mates, etc.

>Puffin Media Portal enables upload of vaping stats, gaming, and social interaction.

The Puffin Classic is an Internet-of-Things device, with a microchip that can connect the user to a wealth of features, content, and unique social and competitive experiences through our desktop or mobile application. We feel this connection is a natural outgrowth of the interactive social discussion and consumption of cannabis online.

>Open source firmware and software for Internet-of-Things development.

We feel Puffin users should be able to customize the virtual aspects of their device, so we’re opening our software and firmware to mod, change, and adapt. This will also allow developers to more easily integrate Puffin data into their own projects and create new uses and applications. Want to create a vaporizer game? We’re building your platform.

>Expandable hardware; dry herb convection tank, ceramic wick slated for development.

Puffin is designed so parts can be disassembled, maintained, and replaced when needed to prolong the life of the device. Options like a dry herbal convection tank are in initial development, and will be accompanied with additions and refinements to software, which can be uploaded via USB. The base Puffin hardware platform will be compatible with new accessories.

More About High Plains Research:

We at High Plains are part of a growing cannabis community, and we support our fellows in Colorado by building our products here. Our small company has some talented people whose skills allow us to do the vital software, electronic, and mechanical work in house, and outsource the rest to local companies or elsewhere in the US. We machined the molds for our rubber grips and hard plastic parts in our Colorado shop, where we’ve been building the chassis and metal parts for our prototypes. A concept can be rendered, 3D printed, then molds machined ready to make the actual part, all in house.

After testing and multiple rounds of design tweaks, we are currently in the process of manufacturing the first production units of the Puffin Classic. Our electronic manufacturer, based out of Minnesota, is building the flex circuits for those units, and we are working on software development as we prepare to receive the first small run of electronics.

We intend the Puffin’s novel software feature set to be supported by the community of users who adopt it; we will open the platform and firmware code to casual users, developers and modders. A framework of social and competitive cannabis content will be just the starting point. We welcome your input, suggestions, requests, rants, demands, and other content. At this stage of development, we have a chance to adapt and react, so we’re reaching out to the wider vaporizing and cannabis communities to hear their thoughts.

My Mind Is Free
Well, I think indiegogo will take your campaign down when they find out about it. Also I am not really digging that at $75... you get 2 whole t-shirts. Not very attractive.

That being said. Good luck! Like the idea of a more permanent atomizer. How would this be better than say, a tc mod with a ceramic donut or a persei with a herc?

seaofgreens,

I appreciate your input! You're spot on with the comparison to the w9tech models, which use a similar design. Our prototype performance is comparable to models like the Persei, which are made for the concentrates market. Our proto atomizer's tested lifespan is about 5 months with heavy use.

I would say that what sets us apart from most vaporizer companies in general is our focus on innovative tech, and a dedication to building our product in the USA. We have total control over the manufacture and quality of our components, because we're making them here in Colorado, not buying them from a factory in China. The majority of dollars spent on a Puffin go to support domestic jobs-- with the exception of the battery, which is the best import we could find, everything is made here in the USA. That puts us in a very small group of vape manufacturers. Features like our locking passkey, control options, and open source software raise the bar a bit farther still.

IGG hasn't objected to our perk structure, at least not yet; gifts of cannabis are completely legal in Colorado, up to an ounce, so long as all parties are over 21 years of age. We're certainly not promising to send anyone cannabis, which would be illegal.
