Discontinued The Okin by D.M. Pipes

Here's a quick video showing the loading and charcoal burn. I wish the shot was longer, but the vaporist featured in the video started drooling all over the table because they had to maintain exhaling while facing down, hahaha. In any case, it's a decent teaser. Please refrain from sharing outside of the forum, thanks!

.

This video is beyond cool. 2 quick questions. How many draws do you think you can get on one chamber load? And at the 1:30 mark of the video it looks like the Okin spits fire, what happened there?

Thank you so much for sharing this.

I thought this was supposed to be a portable vape, with a torch that size it sure going to make it a bitch to carry around.

Actually, that is just for this prototype, for the production model you will unfortunately need one of these...

Thanks!

The number of draws depends on inhale rate/strength and how much you load into the chamber. Haul on it hard, and you'll make the charcoal burn hot and fast. By rotating the vaporizer between your fingers and tumbling the herbs with the inhale you can fully vaporize a chamber load in 2-3 long draws, with the first being noticeably thicker and richer in flavour. A good technique for smaller chamber loads and thick flavourful vapor. This is the technique used in the video.

If you draw slower, the ember will burn slower, cooler, and more evenly. You can tumble the herbs much slower now. This can stretch it out to 7-10 smaller draws of more even vapor quality. This is better for larger chamber loads since it will give the herbs time to tumble around evenly.

Ideally you want to match the chamber load, and draw technique, to the charcoal burn life. If all goes well, you should end up with even vaporization throughout the chamber just before the ember is spent, using either technique.

Charcoals are a one-time use.

If you want more draws just dump, reload and light! HA! That could be a slogan right there.

The 1:30 mark in the video showcases my favourite part of the ember lighting. Before the very first draw, you should exhale through the okin to clear any loose carbon that may be on the inner walls of the bamboo charcoal. When this loose carbon is blown out of the hot ember, it ignites and burns up in the air. Apart from looking super awesome, it also feeds oxygen to the ember to ensure it is burning even and well for the first draw.

In the video, you can see the sudden moment shortly after the fire spit where the ember glows very bright, this is the start of the actual inhale.

And if you listen closely you can hear the ember crackle like a campfire.

What's this like on a water pipe? Is there a point where the draw is hard enough to combust? I think a funnel (metal ones for icing work) would be a lot sturdier for loading than the paper :) This is awesome!

No idea how it would react to a water pipe. Combustion is possible with a combination of very heavy draw, healthy ember, and not agitating the chamber load. Though, you really have to try, it doesn't ever happen by accident.

And there are probably a ton of things better than the paper funnel, hahah. Don't worry, that won't come with it!

every time i read the updates, i am so glad, i found this thread. i'm also greatful for being able to follow the evolution of the design of the okin and to read the motivation behind the little features that form this, most probably, great piece of art. it also seems to me, your design decisions, to make it simpler, help with the price point as a bonus. the video finally puts things into perspective and like the rest of us here, i freaking love it. can't wait to see the test results. the cigar vibe definitely adds a badass coolness most plastic vapes lack of. Clint Eastwood would probably have used an Okin in his early westerns. :)

After watching the video i have to say this will be a great vape... and it is really classy... if its efficient with your herb, tastes good and produces nice vapor clouds and does not combust this will be defintly a winner....

but what i don t understand is... aren t you inhaling fumes from the burning charcoal.. and if yes is that not bad for your health lungs... i know about this jamaican charcoal vape and have r2ad that the used charcoal (bbamboo?) Is save and no concerns... but i don t understand why exactly...

By the way i want a okin... if there will be a order list put me on it please.... this thing can revolutonize the vapor market...
good luck @Dan Morrison

That's fantastic vapor production!

The charcoal's center bore is because it's from bamboo, yes? I'm really interested in the home made charcoal you mentioned earlier since my neighbor has it growing between our homes. I guess you need to get the right diameter to start with when you cut the bamboo...go for the small ones.

@Quetzalcoatl - I run everything through water, but won't do it with this thing. Although I'm sure someone on this forum will make it happen!

Thank you!

And, I often think about doing a vaporizer in the mushroom-pipe style... I think it would be so neat! I will definitely be making some one of a kind bamboo charcoal powered vaporizers in the future. So many possibilities.
Would love to see the ABV after a session! Great vapor production! Thanks!

Here is an earlier post discussing this, The Okin by D.M. Pipes

I believe the vaporizer you're referring to uses coconut husk charcoal.

The bamboo I used is called Tonkin bamboo. This strain has thick walls and straight cane. You want a nice thick wall for the charcoal so it burns at the proper temperature for the right amount of time.

When converting dry cane to charcoal, it shrinks. So you have to start with cane that is a bit larger than your desired length and diameter. It will shrink even more if you are starting with fresh green cane.

A full guide will be posted to my website about converting bamboo to charcoal, and what diameters work best, etc... To give you a rough idea, you want to shoot for a charcoal with a diameter of 8.5mm-11mm, which means starting with dry cane in the 10-13mm range.

Would love to see the ABV after a session! Great vapor production! Thanks!

Soon soon!

I'm already brainstorming an adapter with bearings, just in case you need to turn the Okin like we saw the user on the video.

Ha, yep! I thought about that as well, It wouldn't be hard to make. For now I am just focused on getting this out there... then we will see about possible accessories!

I am pumped about this little guy.
Definitely a "glass of bourbon" type of vape...at least for me. Puff on this beauty in front of the fire...on the porch at night...oh yes, it will be a divine experience im sure. Flavor has got to be something unique and special. Especially with tasty tasty shatter...mmmmmmm
I totally agree. I recently been eyeing the vapman and Daisy, but the looks on this is on a different level aesthetically. Like Dan said, I could take this around the golf course and it looks like a cigar.

I think it would have a hard time beating the Vapman as an all round portable vape, but as a chilling at home or at a friend's with some fine herb and some wine kinda vape maybe?

This is a very intriguing vape, and also @Dan Morrison's thoughts on the future of vaping (see own thread) makes me feel like this is made by someone who cares :)

Hi norvape,

I am currently trying to find the best price for vapman, since this is currently unavailable to purchase..I'm talking with Rene from vapman and randy from piu. Randy gives the best prices I know, but want everything sent in one package. I want the original vapman lighter and concentrate screen too, but I could by separately. I like everything shipped at one time. Sorry for diverging from this thread.

I am opening up a mailing list for those interested in a pre-order. PM me your email address and I will add you.

When pre-orders open, I will notify the mailing list first.

The future pre-order list will, perhaps, require a deposit of $5, so that I can weed out the not-so-serious buyers and have a more accurate list.

Here's the newest prototype. I made some changes to the internals. This is just a rough model that I will be keeping, as it's missing the second set of brass screws that I will be adding to the final design.

I didn't bother putting a patina on the metal tip, but now that I see it finished, I really like the dull silver finish... Perhaps I will just play around with different patinas with each batch of vaporizers.

As you can see, I've used red sewing thread for my "o-rings". I switched out the metal screen for a cotton screen. This lets you use whatever cotton fabric you like, customizing the mesh size without having to order new screens. It also has better contact with the walls of the chamber and allows for a larger filter area opposed to fitting a metal screen on the inside diameter.

You can plunge the filter all the way into the chamber, right up into the vaporization zone. So you could experiment with coating the cotton filter with concentrates.

Also, I mentioned that it would be neat to customize the stems with paint or drawings of some sort... here's an idea of what that might look like with some painted stripes!
