hello all,
I need some help here or maybe i am just crazy. if anyone else in this thread still uses the original WeMo Switch (not the insight) and uses the WeMo app on their iPhone i need your help. here is the situation:

in late december 2013 i bought the original WeMo switch (not the insight) from Best Buy. so i only bought it a month ago or less. i installed the app on my iPhone 4S and set it up. at the time of installing the app, the icon for the WeMo app was orange (i note the color cause i did not look at the version number at the time). i set it up for my Floud (Unsupported cloud for those that don't know) and the manual on and off worked as it should. i setup one rule on the app to turn on my cloud during the week each day at 6:40am and turn off at 7:20am. that rule ran flawlessly and i had no issue with the switch or the app. i was loving life.

about a week or a week and half ago the app updated on my iPhone and now the icon is green (version 1.4.1 i looked this time). the manual on and off and my single rule still work as they should but i have now noticed throughout the day my switch turns on when it is supposed to be off randomly on its own. i really thought i was crazy so i did not post this right away... so i watched it for the next week. i would make sure it was off when i left my house in the morning and then open the app on my phone at random times during the day and the green light was on. i would turn it off and check later and sometimes it would still be off and sometimes it would be on again. this only started AFTER the update of the app.

so.... anyone else with an iPhone 4S and the original WeMo switch out there want to see if this happening to you or is it just me?? i know i am crazy (i have the paperwork to prove it) but am i that crazy???

Menz, have you tried deleting the app and re-installing it? My ipone is a 5, so I can't help troubleshoot.

I actually just got my WeMo today and I also have an iPhone 4S. I haven't had time to adjust the rules or set schedules, but I will most likely be doing these things very soon. If you're problem isn't resolved by the time I have started adjusting my settings I'll see if I have similar problems. For now I'm just amused at the on and off, but it will be very nice to be able to set schedules.

for those of us that don't require a 24/7 infinitely programmable wifi robot.

Like if we just want the evo to stay on for say a six-hour period
without the bother of checking on it, and that's it.

Because of the auto shutoff , to have the EVO stay on for 6 hours you do need a program and it cannot be just a simple timer.

You have to turn it on somehow - a simple timer would work for this.

At the end of your shift, you need to turn it off - a simple timer will work for this.

But you also have to factor in the auto shutoff, and it tends to vary a bit from unit to unit. So you need to be able to turn the device off and on every 30 to 60 minutes during your shift. A simple timer will not do for that...

Once set, the WeMo is straight up and simple. The setup is also pretty intuitive, so it honestly fits like a round peg in a round hole.

how can you NOT check it with a program or recipe?? the EVO and the CLOUD have auto shutoffs. no way around those without multiple programs

Cool, I've got one of these already, I'll have to try it.

So this work pretty well, now it's easy to run my cloud for 5+ hours at a time.
I just programmed it to go on at 7am, off at 7:44, on at 7:45, off at 8:30 etc.,
until all 8 slots were used up, it finishes at 1:30pm or thereabouts.
Then all I have to do is set the clock to 6:59am and watch the countdown!
Of course I can always use it on manual override as well

But I couldn't use the Q remote to heat up my unit from my car on my way home...or even better have it turn on the unit without me doing anything simply because it knows it's time to go or senses I'm on my way!

FWIW I used to use my q remote all the time. I never saw it as a gimmick (though I understand a lot of people do)

An IR remote control and the WeMo aren't even close to being comparable devices. A remote control is used for a wide variety of options while in direct line of sight and proximity to it's only controllable unit. The WeMo Insight acts as a user controllable wall outlet through an app that gives constant feedback of the power being used by the unit plugged into it.

Yes, you can turn the WeMo on and off and set a schedule for the WeMo from wherever you happen to be as long as you have phone service, but you can not control other functions of the unit plugged into the WeMo.

I'm looking at this right now. It has enough programs to on/off every hour so EVO will run 24/7. Looks fairly easy to operate. Its grounded but I wonder if its heavy duty enough . . .

I used one like that, it was on for seven hours or so but I only left it on for 45 minutes before reset. It worked fine for a while, then I found myself resetting the evo manually sometimes as I would find it blinking.

This thing is absolutely awesome!!!

Easy to program, no internet or recipes, I programmed it to turn on at the top (00:00) of every hour and off at the (00:59) so it power cycles once each hour and is off one minute per hour, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I am now free at last from power cycling my EVO. . .

So I just installed a WEMO for my EVO.

I'm sure I'll figure my question out after spending some time with it, but I'm impatient and all I wanna figure out is....

If I set it to turn the EVO on at 8am and then off at 8pm, will that override the EVO auto shut off?

Or do I need to set rules using intervals to turn it back on when it shuts off after an hour?

Evo auto offs every hour. Toggle the power on/off every hour if you wish.
