I walk in spite of my pain.

A quote from that article about those 99 and 92 year old runners:

"While training for his 61st triathlon at age 74, a car stuck him during a bike ride. He suffered a collapsed lung and broke several ribs and his pelvis, spending 41 nights in the hospital. He recovered and returned to running, not stopping for the past 18 years except for a brief period after hip replacement surgery in 2008."

No doubt that he also ran in spite of his pain.

Pain is kinda tricky. On one hand, it could be your body telling you, "STOP, you are doing me damage." On the other hand, it could be your body telling you, "This hurts but DON'T stop. I need this." Very important to know the difference.

I recently went through a month and a half of physical therapy for an arthritic shoulder that was freezing up on me that was originally triggered by a rotator cuff tear that I got at the gym 30 years ago when doing flys on the pullys. I couldn't reach behind my back to comb my hair or to put a belt on. Had a hard time tucking in a shirt. Really hurt and the more it hurt, the less I used it.

Physical therapy consisted mainly of stretching those muscles and tendons so that I could regain movement again. Fuck..........those sessions along with the exercises that I had to do at home hurt like a motherfucker. And don't get me started on the myofacial realease therapy that the therapist put me through. That brought tears to my eyes, but 6 weeks later now and I have full movement with no pain.

In my case, trying to escape the pain by not using my shoulder when it hurt actually made it worse.

In your case, that pain may never go away but ya got to ask yourself if walking is doing you more good than bad. It seems like you've already answered that question, eh?

I used to run through pain, which caused more problems because it was my body saying chill out. The pain I have now is usually saying I'm stiff and old, don't do it please.

It's important to know the type of pain I'm having so I don't do my harm... But walking had never caused me harm. If I cannot walk fast, I walk slow. My secund year in town I had crippling pain when I woke up. If I gave in I don't know if I would be walking now. Halfway to work the pain was bearable and I could walk more normal. It was seriously like glass was in my joints.

I should stretch a lot more. But I get lots of movement all week playing with toddlers at work.

This is my case, too. My pain is in my knees, ankles, feet, back, and chronic iritis in my left eye. A desk job would kill me. Lol

I have had brief periods where I didn't work out but never more that a few weeks. Mental issues are more of a problem than physical for me. I sometimes have a WTF?!? moment meeting people 20 years younger that are in worse shape than I'v ever been in.
