Refilling smaller torch lighters

This isn't really a vaporizing question but I don't know any better place to ask it.

I have some of those small butane torches you can get at any convenience store and one Zico lighter I bought filled up. Usually when they run out i just toss one and i get a new one.

I have two empty ones sitting here and some butane. I can use the butane to fill my big torches like the Blazer Big Shot no problem. But with the small ones butane just sprays all over the place around the can nozzle and nothing makes it into the lighter. Same with the Zico but it's made of metal so I can't see if there's anything in it. I just know it is always spraying back at me.

I know it's going to be simple but what am I doing wrong here? I wasted so much butane spraying it all over the room but I know there must be a way to re-fill these correctly, or people would'nt do it!

I have made sure the flame size is set about half way on all my lighters when filling. I know this because it was made clear to me when I got my dab torch to not fill them with the valve completely closed.

it's also a good idea to make sure there isn't butane in the tank. depress the nozzle tip to let out any pressure before you refill. this way when you depress the tip with your can of butane, there isn't any butane or air forcing its way out creating an impediment for the butane trying to go in. basically - bleed it out before you refill
