Ready Made Brownie mix ABV experiment

Lefthook

VapoMiner
Hello to all my FC friends

Just wanted to share my first real cooking with abv experience.
Well after reading loads on cooking i decided to go for an easy method. What i did was , grabbed about oz of ABV ( dark brown with some lighter bits also) Crushed it up into powder form and then added enough olive oil to cover it. Left it in a dark warmish place for just over 24hours.

Next day bought some Tescos brownie mix ( Tescos is a big supermarket chain in the uk) the mix only stated it required water but i thought fuck it and dumped in ABV oil as it was and a little water.
Mixed it up and then stuck it in the oven on a low heat fo half hour.

Well thought i would try one the other night, took about an hour to kick in but felt amazing a real chilled out body high, kinda reminded me of the feeling i would get after smoking a huge Jay. The taste was not to bad either, only a slight grainy texture.

Any ways just thought i would share my experience and looking forward to building my ABV back up again in order to do a bit of cooking .

You should consider using coconut oil instead of olive oil. Much better for saturation of cannabinoids. You should also filter the ABV (cheesecloth works) from the oil. The grainy texture was you eating the ABV. Strain and it's normal brownies

If you wanna get super fancy you could also add soy lethicin

Such truth to the soy lecithin! I've used lecithin with ABV cookies in a coconut oil extraction and have had great results! 12 grams of ABV resulted in a total of 60 doses (30 Oreo stuffed sugar cookies , half a cookie is more than enough) for low-medium tolerance users. :ko:

whats up Darkedhunter? I'm curious about your use of lecithin. Specifically how you added it to your recipe and how you knew how much to use.

Almost there...
+1 for coconut oil!!

Easiest way is to simmer the ABV with the coconut oil in a crockpot/heated sauce pot for a long time.
First time i left it for about 20 hours and they were super intense!!
Also added a few nugs for a bit of an extra kick.
Drain, strain and squeeze all the oil out.

Find a browine recipe that uses at least a 3/4 cup of oil and use the coconut oil prepared earlier.
Mix and bake and ice.
Enjoy the trip!

PS: if this is your first time doing this or with edibles just try 1/2 a sqaure at a time. Allow 1 hour to pass before consuming anymore as you dont want to pass out!

This weekend I plan on making abv brownies for the first time. I'm sparing no expense, unrefined coconut oil, sunflower lecithin, mint chocolate chips, and maybe almonds or hemp seeds.. you get it lol. I'm going to do it big but I also want to do it right. I'm thinking that the crockpot method would be easiest, probably let it sit for 12+ hours.

My main concern is avoiding loss of potency. I don't want the heat to get to the point that is destroy all the cannabinoid goodness. Is there anyway to gauge temperatures that the crockpot uses? I've never used one before so this weekend should be a learning experience for me lol. Also lazylate (or anybody else knowledgeable on the subject) I have read of people mixing the water in with the oil and herb through the heating process. I believe the addition of the water helps keep the temperature well under the boiling point of the cannabinoids as well as removing some of the infamous ABV taste. Just wondering if anyone can confirm what I've heard or provide any additional info/tips to a cannabis noob chef.

I want to make sure I take all the precautions to make this a success after recently losing a quarter of some dank to a failed green dragon experiment:doh:
Any and all input is much appreciated.

To make life easier buy a thermometer for yourself.
I filled my saucepot with cocnut oil and turned it on for about 4 hours so it could reach max temp.
It maxed out at around 90 degrees Celsius, which is perfect for simmering.

I would not add water to the mix though...
What i think they are talking about is adding water to the crockpot while the oil is in another container that is heated by the water, this would make more sense with regards to temp control.

Most crockpots have 3 temp settings, low to high.
Set it up and fill with water and check the temp at each setting after letting it heat up for a few hours, this will give you a good guidline of how hot it gets.

The saucepot i have holds a full jar of coconut oil and i can place a 500ml jar of ABV in it and it is just below the rim of the pot, the perfect size!

Thank you for the response what you have said has been quite helpful :) That sauce pot sounds ideal for making edibles. When you mention saucepot and crockpot are you talking about the same thing? The crockpot I am going to use seems like it could hold quite a bit more than what I'm putting into to it. The brownie recipe only calls for 1/2 cup of oil. I know with butter and oil if you heat it on a range with herb in it you want to put more ingredient than what the recipe calls for due to some of the butter/oil burning off. Is it safe to say that the same phenomena happens while using a crockpot?

With regards to cooking, the crock has settings on high and low. After leaving it on for 4 hours to max the temp, did you leave the pot at that setting for the full time you cooked it?

The idea of testing the temp with water on the different settings is genius. I also agree that the idea of a double boiler style method makes more sense but they literally mixed the herb + water + oil all together. I might test this method in the future to see if the claims about removing the ABV taste is true.

Yeah the water would remove the water-solubles but the cannabinoids aren't water-soluble. I have a mug warmer that I can use to melt the oil and simmer the bud in. It's nice for making smaller batches.

I'm willing to bet that is the idea behind the method. While all the cannabinoids are fine, solubles possibly including the taste of the ABV stays in the water. After heating the mixture you let it cool in the fridge or outside if you live where its cold enough. The cannaoil floats to the top, cools, and forms into a disc. Then you pop the oil block off like a sheet of ice on water and presto!

Still mentally debating if I should test it this weekend or in the future...

This is the sauce pot i am talking about:

Came with the crock pot we bought.

A good way to test is to make a small batch and just try the oil after it has simmered.
We were trying the oil and the batter and by the time the brownies were cooked, so were we!

Awesome, that is very similar to the crock pot I will be using. Thanks again for the advice I feel more confident now in making the canna oil, and am very much looking forward to it.

↑ haha that is too perfect.

Just writing to make an update and express a small concern. Right now I've got the ABV cooking with some virgin unrefined coconut oil in a crockpot. I have the setting on low and there are small bubbles coming up. Its been cooking so far about 2-3 hours and the bubbles started showing recently.

I've been told that I should be able to let it simmer for 24 hours. At the rate these bubbles are popping up its making me nervous to let it go overnight because I don't wanna wake up and all the oil is evaporated. I'm almost considering placing the actual pot/container of the crockpot and into the oven and setting that on a reasonable temperature. Any help FC can provide is very welcome :)

edit 3 hours later: Oil seems to have leveled off and the presence of bubbles is gone. No doubt I have less oil than I began with but overall not that much was lost. Looks like I'm headed in a good direction.
