Random thoughts

Let me be clear: I don't think China is perfect and wonderful in every way. They could afford to take a more Liberal approach towards speech and criticizing the government. But, especially in this moment in history, I'm not going to spend much time being upset about what China is up to from deep within the American BurgerReich
Let me be clear: I don't think America is perfect and wonderful in every way. They could afford to take a more Liberal approach toward lynching black and indigenous people and criticizing communism. But, especially in this moment in history, I'm not going to spend much time being upset about what America is up to from deep within the Soviet Stalinist State.

If you saw someone say that in 1949, would you rush to the defense of America, or would you agree that one bad doesn't make another less bad and those things absolutely deserved criticism? China is just as authoritarian as we are. Centralized authority means they have much quicker reactions to global catastrophe like climate change, but it also is still a deeply hierarchical economic system with severely limited freedom for most. I would have to get my mother's permission for hormones.

I get that you hate America. Me too. This place is a hellscape and it always has been, despite the propaganda pushed about American exceptionalism. But please stop simping for a different dictator who still would throw me in jail for transitioning and who wouldn't let me live as myself unless I underwent traumatic, intensive surgery. A fascist by another name is still a fascist.

The problem with this comparison is, current day America is now doing most of the things you don't like about China. We're blackbagging dissenters and sending them to gulags. We're rolling back protections for the LGBTQ community. This is in addition to all the evil we do around the world that China does not do, like murdering a million people after 9/11 or committing genocide in Gaza. Or destroying the global economy for no perceivable reason.

We now have the bad parts of China without the high speed rail.

But please stop simping for a different dictator who still would throw me in jail for transitioning and who wouldn't let me live as myself unless I underwent traumatic, intensive surgery. A fascist by another name is still a fascist.

The simping is mostly a meme. And a ruse to get me a gaming laptop.

But, imo, Western Leftists should have a more nuanced view on America's "enemies" than Liberals do. When I praise China, I'm talking about their incredible development, social services, raising the standard of living for the rural poor... all in an astoundingly short period of time. Not their government's views on censorship or conservative Chinese peoples' views on LGBTQ rights. I think that's bad.

I support having reality-based criticisms of China! But let's be honest. The media and the Trump Administration aren't banging the war drums against China because they're upset about how trans people or Muslims are being treated over there. No, they want to destroy China because they have the audacity to try something other than Neoliberal Capitalism. Same reason we've been conducting siege warfare on Cuba for nearly a century.

This legal permanent resident was just kidnapped off the streets by the Gestapo. He will be disappeared to a cage in a different State for "antisemitism". Listen to his words here:

Meanwhile, this "fine person" was given a full pardon by the President a few weeks ago after doing January 6th:

I wasn't even thinking about your average Fox watching hog. I'm talking about the talking heads on Fox and politicians.

I watched the President of El Salvador and the President of my country both call Marylander Kilmar Abrego Garcia a "terrorist". The only evidence for this is a disgraced, fired cop saying he was a member of MS-13 in Long Island. Except Garcia has never been to NY State once. They're knowingly lying. Everyone who isn't a complete fucking moron knows they're lying.

Garcia has a US citizen wife and children, by the way. I love how the Family Values people keep breaking up American families. Mahmoud Khalil's wife is a very pregnant US Citizen.

Then they grabbed that dude from Vermont at his US Citizenship appointment. Because he's an "antisemite". Except the evidence shows he clearly isn't. Meanwhile the President personally signed a pardon for a Jan 6th terrorist who wears pro-Holocaust shirts!

I've never been a big fan of the 'horror' genre, when it comes to film.

However, I realized yesterday while watching a commercial / promo for a show featuring drug intradiction by various customs agencies...
THAT is my own 'scary' / horror genre. 😱

Yeah, pretty insane to NOT imagine that a thread about random thoughts will inevitably turn to the fact that we are in a mass extinction exacerbated by capitalism and fascism. Like, pay just a liiiiiiittle bit of attention to the background extinction rate and recognize that the Holocene will be geologically significant for eons.

Edit: I've been reading a fair bit of geology lately and we really are in an absolutely fascinating age. We are experiencing the most rapid and catastrophic climate change that our entire taxonomic order has ever seen. Primates--our taxonomic family, the step above order--came about some 60-75 million years ago, and it isn't clear cut whether any primates were around for the K-Pg event that killed the dinosaurs, which is the last time we had a level of sustained climate change that was this rapid. Hominids have only been around like 17 million years, and while we have seen minor extinction events in that time, we have seen nothing like the mass extinction and level of climate change we find ourselves in at present.

Humans have been around for some 300,000 years, and we've primarily lived in a series of glacial and interglacial periods in the Pleistocene. However, ice ages like that were relatively consistent and even snap ice ages were not as dramatic a rate of change as we are currently experiencing. Large volcanic eruptions would sometimes see temporary snap ice ages (like in the 1600s) which would decrease global temperatures by even up to a few degrees C, but many of those snap ice ages were short-lived. We are in the unique position of being at a high rate of change that is wildly consistent, and the carbon cycle on this planet is being disrupted in some unique ways. The collapse of AMOC is going to dramatically change global climate and that is only one of several critical tipping points we are either up against or have already crossed.

Preparing for a 2C future is wise, but from everything I've seen, it doesn't really make sense to try to, like climate-proof your house for anything above 2C because so many global systems will be disrupted that we can't meaningfully predict the impacts. That is where human resiliency and the capacity to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances is going to be the most crucial. Above 2C, which we might even hit before 2050, is a whole new planet akin to how the Holocene and recession of the last ice age basically left humans with a new planet 12000 years ago. Of course, since we are exiting a fairly stable climate period and entering a relatively high chaos system thanks to added greenhouse effects drastically jumping global heat and exciting molecules WAY more, I do not anticipate we will see a similar period of unbridled population growth. We are likely to peak at no more than 10 billion or so humans which the planet could easily and comfortably sustain so long as we move away from fossil fuel use and move toward sustainability in lifestyle, meaning getting rid of the people who believe they are entitled to thousands of times the resources everyone else has access to.

This is going to also be the beginning of the true space age as we work toward developing interplanetary capabilities, although that work probably won't begin until we stop focusing on the profit incentive and start arranging space exploration democratically.

A relevant verse from the Book of the Living:

"Intelligence is ongoing, individual adaptability.
Adaptations that an intelligent species may make
in a single generation, other species make over
many generations of selective breeding and
selective dying. Yet intelligence is demanding.
If it is misdirected by accident or by intent, it can
foster its own orgies of breeding and dying."

Let's hope we direct our collective intelligence well starting soon. We've been doing a piss-poor job the past few centuries.

For those of you who watch YouTube videos in Chrome: there is an extension that skips the ad as soon as the words "Skip Ad" appear. Not perfect, but helpful.
I think I have Ublock Origin set up as a free extension in Firefox and it prevents adds from appearing in the first place, so folks can look into that too!
