I was wondering what people think of the NY city government owning and operating supermarkets as Momdami wishes to do.

Please, please, no derogatory attacks or name calling. This is simply a thought provoking discussion on the topic.

Well, there's a 'supermarket', and there's the bodega. Like a corner store, jam packed with stuff. Some have deli.

NYC isn't going to be co-opting outlets of <names of NY supermarket chains here>. Nor are they going to be moving to a planned economy (communism) where you can only buy what they make, themselves.

I'm not a New Yawker, but I *do* align with Social Democracy. And from where I sit, Mamdani (sp?) at least has some new, fresh ideas. Will they all work? No. Will *any* of them work? Don't know until we try. But at least someone is trying something. Status Quo benefits status quo, and no one else.

Unless you have a VHCOL income, NY is not only uninhabitable, it's downright inaccessible (someone like myself is going to be motivated to take public transit into the congested areas, rather than pay a $6 surcharge to drive through it, while raising my BP and anger levels into the stratosphere all the while, navigating gridlock. )

Why would I have a problem with a public option for grocery stores? The Free Market has created food deserts across NYC (and in many other areas across America). Is there another solution other than, "fuck the poors, let them survive on frozen burritos from the corner mart"?

There is a trickle down societal benefit to more people having access to affordable healthy food. You're always paying for "someone else's" healthcare, because that's how insurance works. Also, as a tax payer, I'd rather people enter their Medicare eligibility years with fewer health problems:shrug:

NYC has a big, powerful government. They can use economies of scale to buy food at wholesale. Because the store doesn't need to make a profit for lazy shareholders and executives, it can run the store at-cost and deliver lower cost groceries to New Yorkers.

Will *any* of them work? Don't know until we try.

I don't think he has a single policy that hasn't been successfully implemented elsewhere. My midsize college town had free busses for everyone. Zohran's most ambitious policy is free childcare. Finland has had free or low cost childcare for years.

Pretty sure he was polling at about 0% when this came out a few months ago. Everyone's pooping their pants calling this guy a crazy radical. Meanwhile all he's saying is, "let's do a few common sense things to help make this city somewhat affordable for normal people"

I know conservatives who watched that video and admitted, "ok, this guy has 'the juice'"

I think it's an interesting idea!

I'm not a new Yorker, not even an American but I do have a lot of American family. My dad and all my siblings and their families are scattered across the States. As far as I understand there's been accusations of price gouging when it comes to the supermarkets, across the board. If a socially run supermarket with reasonable market presence was able to price products according to their cost alone it might reset competition in that market, especially when the large corpos start to lose sales. That can only be good for everyone except the corpo bosses!

I like the premise. Don't know if it would work. In many cases I'm of the opinion that government should stay out attempting to run a business. I'm afraid it wind up as another government boondoggle.

This gave me a smile. Thanks for this.

I'd like Medicare eligibility to be at zero years (birth). The healthier they start, the healthier they end up.
Meanwhile, the entire Medicare infrastructure model works, with only 3-4% overhead required to run it . Adding the non-senior / non-disabled to the rolls should not be hard (although the cons & other bought pols will do their damnedest to stop that)

SEATTLE has free public transit. I dunno how it's paid for, but you can walk right on a bus without money. Have done it.

Man, I'd love to look to the Nordic states to solve some problems. Some things would require a lot of tweaking, just bc we have 360MM people, compared to (Norway+Sweden+Finland+et al) And a dysfunctional federal gvmt, of course.

I saw very limited ads, not being in the NY area. Didn't know a damned thing about Mr. Mamdani until about 2 days before the election. But as soon as I saw the comparison to Cuomo's campaign (Clinton, Clyburn) and how fast Mamdani was closing, I had a good feeling he'd win. He's an excellent messenger.

Hey Flordah. I visited the library today to find out why the book has not arrived. After a brief discussion I was told that I requested a book written by Elan Pappe which they could not find. Even with having the book's title they were unable to help. So while I was standing there I looked the book up on Amazon and found the authors 1st name is Ilan and not Elan. They have now ordered it. Should be here next week.

You post quite a few photos and most are really good. I was wondering if you would be so kind and sharing how I may post a photo that currently resides on my cell phone. I've never posted photos here.
