Radishes. What is the draw here?

To me, saying radishes are hot is like saying onions or garlic is hot.

Although, I once knew an old lady who thought bell-peppers were hot. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why.

Radishes are low in Saturated Fat, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Magnesium, Copper and Manganese, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C,Folate and Potassium.

And they add a little spice to any salad.

Yes..^^^ Radishes are spicy. They add a bite to whatever you are them to. They are great raw in salads and great roasted with other veggies. Sometimes I add them to soups. Super low carbs and essential IMO to a good Kim Chi. Big ones, small ones. Long or round. Red, white or black. Embrace the humble radish.

I like garden radishes as part of an alfresco platter with cucumber and tomato, maybe a green onion and some salt to dip them in. Radishes make potato salad great. Every 3 months or so when I make a batch of kimchi I use a big daikon. It's quite a hot kimchi, but that's coming from a few different sources of chili and the grated ginger. Daikon is probably the only variety I've ever cooked (in Korean pork soup).

I find them to be more of a bitter taste than hot and spicy.

To me, the absolute key for radishes is that they MUST be really fresh. I like to buy the ones that still have the leaves on the bunch. Fresh, I find radishes (with a bit of salt on them) to be delicious.

Must they be good for something? Can't they be ends in themselves?

This sweet, mild watermelon radish can simply be sliced or eaten like an apple.

That is a beautiful radish, @Accept. I'm going to the garden center this afternoon for more strawberry starts, and I think I'm going to grab a pack of watermelon radish seeds. I've been looking forward to Summer and perking up my salads, and a nice radish sounds like just the thing. Thank you for the lovely picture.

Got my strawberries, some watermelon plants, and watermelon radish seeds. Should fit in well with the rest of the garden. Yay for fruits and vegetables! Not everyone needs to enjoy radishes, and they seem easy enough to avoid if you don't, but I'm glad to have the option. I've read that in the Middle Ages, the rich would put up to 35 ingredients in salads. I keep a list of salad ingredients so I can use as many as possible in mine, or else it's like, lettuce.

Glad to inspire horticultural creativity! Miss the watermelon radishes. At the end, they were as big as grapefruits.

Now, we have these French breakfast radishes, which are quite hot but have little flavor otherwise. The texture is oddly light and spongy. Not a favorite. Might have to switch to boring old daikon.

If you plant radish and carrots in the same row, the radish come up early and mark the row. As you finish the radishes the carrots begin. Great space saver!
Thank You! I have carrot seeds, so now I know where to plant them in relation to radishes. I've got a colorful blend, so some carrots should be purple, yellow, orange.
@2 Cycle, my rabbits love radish greens. The produce manager saves them for me, along with other vegetable trimmings. They don't actually like carrots as much as the carrot tops. They even enjoy my horse radish leaves. Cartoons have given us an odd idea of what rabbits like to eat. This year they will get some of my own radish leaves, so I'm excited. I wasn't even thinking radishes, so I'm psyched I saw this thread! More radishes for people and pets that like them. I certainly don't mind if you avoid radishes. Not everyone enjoys the same foods is all. Fine either way.

Yeah. I put as many things in my salads as I can. Salads can also get pricey this way.

But yeah, that's why I rarely order a salad at a restaurant unless it's from a salad bar with plenty of available ingredients where I can make my own salad...because otherwise, what often comes out of the kitchen is a plate of mostly iceberg lettuce, with a slice/wedge or two of tomato, a few strips of shredded carrot, and 6-8 pieces of shredded cheese...So, it's basically just iceberg lettuce with accents.

Agreed. I like a blend of greens, vegetables, beans, seeds, fruit. It does get pricey, so I particularly enjoy Summer when I can grow much of my salad vegetables. Just having an herb garden is a treat. We had water rationing during the drought years, so I want to take advantage of the rains this Spring, and the ability to water daily in the Summer. We're already getting cherries in, and peaches are next. Radishes will be a nice addition.

Nice. I don't currently live in a place where I can have a garden

I wish I could share with you Ramah. When I bought my house, I thought it would be nice if the house and yard could pitch in a bit. I wanted a bit of paradise, and dreamed of being able to go into the yard year round and pick fruit, and grow vegetables in the Summer. It's been fits and starts, but we keep it going. We donate surplus to a food bank and a Senior Center. Right now we have ripe oranges (Valencia, Blood orange, Cara Cara) grapefruit, lemons, cherries. Next week we should have a different type of cherry, as well as the first of the peaches. I am no way a great gardener, but I do it anyway, and love giving people fresh food as well as eating it. I know I am fortunate in being able to grow a garden. More fortunate even, is having a son willing to dig and do the heavy lifting.
My son just picked up some Rudolph Radish Seeds at the market. Now we get two kinds. Yay!
