2.5 grams a day is way beyond the recommended medical dose for most conditions (other than conditions like cancer where the goal is to intake as much cannabis as possible). I know if I vaped more than 1.5 a day I'd start feeling sick, and get withdrawral symptoms. But that's a totally irresponsible way to use a medicine. If you're just using it to get high, sure vape as much as you want. But since you're treating insomnia, I think that using less would make your withdrawral symptoms less extreme while still treating your condition. Try vaping 3 .15 gram bowls a day. Once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and one a few hours before bed. If that doesn't help you at all, maybe cannabis isn't the best treatment for your sleep issues.
Also try watching some of Dr. Sulak's videos on youtube. He's one of the Drs that works at the place I get my mmj card from. His videos probably say a lot of stuff you've heard before, but he sums it up nicely, and sets up clear ways of following his advice. Lots of good information on sensitization to cannabis, tolerance, and getting the most out of your medicine while feeling good doing it, and with as few symptoms as possible.
You bring up the coffee example, which I agree with. I don't drink coffee because I can't control my use, and I always end up drinking more than I intend, which leads me to terrible symptoms, which makes me take a break, which leads me to even worse withdrawral symptoms. It creates a vicious cycle, which I cannot handle, so I stopped drinking coffee. Your relationship with cannabis sounds like my relationship with coffee, so maybe your best bet is to take a long break without relapsing or slipping, and see how you feel after that. If after a month without cannabis you feel good, I suggest you stop using it all together, as clearly you are not happy with the symptoms you experience.
