Primus - Green Naugahyde

As an old school Primus fan, I am rather excited about this new CD (I just picked it up today) Thus far, I have only dhelved into the first few tracks and I must say I am impressed.

Being an old school fan, one of my FAVORITE musicians in their lineup was Tim (Herb) Alexander (when it came to his style for their older material)

Suck on this - Brilliant but raw.

Frizzle Fry - Brilliant and much more polished.

(Misc Debris) - Brilliant interpretation of others material.

Sailing the Seas of Cheese - Inching towards mainstream commercialism. I think this is where the Herb/Primus disconnect started.

Pork Soda - More commercial/Radio friendly than all other albums previously. Still good.

Tales From the Punchbowl - Felt like they were experimenting too much to get that 'old spark' back. (Last album with Herb)

Brown Album - First effort with Brain. And while he could play Tim's parts to a T, he lacked the creative finesse that Herb brought to the table.

Antipop - Another effort with a puzzle piece that didnt quite fit right. (Sorry Brain - You are much better suited for GnR)

Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People - Primus should not try to act like musicians. This was (IMO) by far the worst effort from them I have heard to date. The creative spark with Tim Alexander had beyond fizzled, a valiant effort that fell way short. (Thank goodness it was only 5 tracks)

Green Naugahyde introduces (once again) Jay Lane and that familiar backbeat that compliments the already complex bass patterns Les is hashing out, and the out in left field guitar that Ler provides (but still so fits)
I feel that their creative juices are flowing again and the right players are in place to 'make it happen' again. Just in the first few tracks, it has that "old school" Primus feel to it, but in a much more mature and refined package.

At first, I was rather skeptical of whether Jay was the right person to fill the shoes of Alexander. But his creativity and style more than compliment the sound that many a fans have come to know and love.

AGBeer,
That released today?

Going to go download that right now!

Claypool won't hate me, he's only gotten a couple hundred of my dollars through concert tickets!

Anyone who hasn't listened to Primus should give them a try! They're literally just about the only modern act I like since Nirvana, whom I wasn't even crazy about. It's an amazing marriage of funk and rock and godknowswhat that is just very singular and creative.

Oysterhead (Primus + Phish) is one of my favorite collaborations ever...Neil Young/crazy horse + pearl jam, Band, Audioslave, anything Maynard/Tool collaborate on...so many good ones...

Thanks for the heads up on the new LP. DLing ASAP!

Cheers! Primus SUCKS! I've been a fan since I won tickets for a "punchbowl" tour show. I only knew My Name is Mud, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver, and Jerry was a Race Car Driver. I was floored! Bought all the cd's soon after and saw them 3 more times.

Downloaded the new album today and it gets 2 thumbs up. It's got a good mix of all the Primus sounds/styles. I wonder if Les only stopped smoking pot and just vapes it now.

Yeah, It almost reminds me of what Tales from the Punchbowl was supposed to sound like. Heavy experimentation because the 3 of you are in the pocket and the musical energy is flowing. It is a bit more out there than some of their other stuff, but it is still damned good.

The new album is pretty good. Primus sucks for sure.

Oysterhead isn't Primus and Phish. It is one member of Primus, one member of Phish, and one member (former) of The Police.

You can download (legally) some of their shows, including the first full show which was in my hometown, here:

I remember having the HBO Reverb performance with Oysterhead, North Mississippi All Stars (I believe) and The Brand New Immortals.

Other bands aside, I nearly jizzed all over myself when I saw the Oysterhead performance.
It was that impressive.

Never a huge primus fan but the band oyster head, with trey anastasio from phish, les claypool, and the drummer from the police, cant remember his name, made some pretty interesting stuff.

Anything Trey does is amazing IMO. Fishman and Mike were both with Trey the couple times I saw Oysterhead. In fact, I believe one of the songs is dedicated to Fishman. Only 3 names may have appeared on the LP, but the influence of all musicians was palpable.

My favorite is always when Trey does an acoustic or spotlight solo. The world seems at peace.

BTW - Widespread Panic is my second favorite band behind Phish. Love the North Mississippi AS (remind me of Widespread). Bonnaroo!

treecityrnd,
I just might,thanks. :)
It's not that i'm not a fan as in disliking them btw,but rather from not having heard much from them. ;)

Thanks for the review, AGBeer. I'm a big fan of Herb myself (the drummer, though I do like the lowercase herb as well), and your summary of their discography was spot on. So if you like the new album, I probably would, too.

Come to think of it, my first first experience was the video for Jerry Was a Racecar Driver on MTV. I remember being impressed with them then but not mesmerized. Frizzle Fry was by far what pushed me over the edge. Talk about music to kick the hackey sack to!

Man, bringing back memories :D
