This segment of the BarnBoy series is thanks to the support from @
Sativape. Today I will discuss some preventative maintenance (PM) that I now do. Some of these ideas are borrowed from others on the forum. I recommend everyone re-read and re-like the posts on this thread from the beginning! Some ideas are things I found playing with the PNP over the past month. There are several layers of preventative maintenance needed to keep a PNP in good operating condition. They break down to: Every Use, Daily and Weekly (or longer). All of these will depend upon the kind of stuff you use. My NorCal stuff largely dictates what I have to do to my PNP to keep it fresh. So your PM schedules may differ!
I already discussed how I clean bullets
here. This is the biggest and most time consuming part of keeping the PNP fresh, but well worth it. If you don’t keep your bullets clean, the inside of your PNP will look tan/brown/tarnished very quickly. So let’s discuss other items in the Every Use and Daily PM schedules.
First up when you open up the PNP after a use is the PonG. I give its screen a vigorous brush with the little brushes I make or the PNP brush. Give it a really good scrub to try to knock out any resin residue from the screen. Then give it a quick back-blow to rid it of any dust created by the scrub. Inspect looking down PonG bore (see photo way below). If screen is clogged, deep clean the PonG. I also find I need to wipe the outside wall of the PonG tube. The tube side that is most exposed is the surface on my PNP that collects the most. It also gunk’s up on the tall back inner wall in the PNP. It is easiest to wipe these surfaces while the unit is still warm. Then due to all the bad PonG posts, I inspect it for cracks. Knock on wood, nothing yet…
Once I dump a bullet into a
hot tray holder, I will then wipe the back wall of the PNP with a paper towel, shirt tail, finger or Q-tip. As stated above, the exposed tube surface and this wall really collect gunk as seen by the grunge on the Q-tips in the above and below photos. If there is a spare Q-tip handy, I might just swab the insides of the PNP. I noticed if I let the PNP simmer because I’m busy doing other things, this surface will still get dirty, no matter how clean I keep the bullets. Some of these steps are done more daily than after every use…
Once clean, I put the PNP back together empty and draw as hard as I can. Occasionally I get particles that got into the air pathway. Don’t recommend doing this hard draw without a PonG else the chunks go down your throat. So except for PonG deep cleaning details, this covers all of the PM the BarnBoy does to keep his PNP better than day new (no new device fumes/flavor!).
@
herbivore21 –I am sorry you an others have had PonG issues and feel for your international issue. The black goop I saw on your PonG posts looks much like my PonG after a session brought up to setting 4 (see photo collage below). The subtle issue with the PonG/GonG is how the residue collects along the walls. I believe as unit is used, residue will slough with gravity and collect on the screen. As noted above, I have areas that appear to collect more gunk than others. The areas looked like the same areas you had gunk and issues. There are other
photos as of late that show a broken tube sections, and the inner & outer tube walls are thick with goop. Thus my comment about cleanliness! You can even see the damage I did to my PonG by not cleaning it the first three weeks in the photos below. Even after ultra-sonic cleaning, there is still stuff stuck to the screen. The quick PonG cleaning below was a simple hot water flush, and then scrub with PNP brush and a mild soap…
