Old Head Freight Train

Hello everyone! I just want to give you an update on Old Head device production.

Without going into detail (this is unfortunately ongoing), the Hot Rod launch was an amazing record day for Old Head, selling out in a day, which turns out to be a bad thing... and now a bank somewhere in the financial network that makes this fairy tale possible is going to go ahead and hold onto those sales for 'a while' because of what I have been assured are in fact, reasons.

I know there have been a lot of people asking when more Hot Rods will be available, but given my losses so far on the labor of love I call the Hot Rod - I am (temporarily at least) halting production of it. I think I need to shift my focus, at least temporarily, to something else I've been working on for a while now to get some wind back in the Old Head sails. Something for the masses, that has a more affordable price of entry, so that I can get them into more hands…

The Hot Rod is about the beautifully handcrafted wooden accents and the careful balance of performance and energy efficiency - but this is decidedly more industrious. No frills, just raw power. So that's why I've decided to call it the Old Head Freight Train.

Here it is with the 'flower engine' that it will ship with at launch. The Ti 'flower engine' is filled with (34) 4mm ruby pearls, slides through a 20mm coil, and gets capped with the Freight Train's Ti 18mm finned injector. This screenless design provides for a purely titanium and ruby airpath, providing crisp, clean extraction. If you've got your own suitable pid, coil, and extraction chamber; the Freight Train will retail for $120 for the flower engine, rubies, and injector. A package with the Freight Train, along with pid, 20mm coil, and an extraction chamber will run somewhere around $250, and of course there will be a stand option available - but those looking for the cheapest point of entry can easily get away with using something like a double walled stainless steel coffee mug to house your Freight Train...

Thank you everyone for your support, you guys have kept me going and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

Interesting that he kept the bottom half empty; given the recent trend of getting the extraction closer to the material (a la Taroma 2.0); I wonder if the planned bowl will help getting it closer to the elevated injector?

If he can't meet demand, why pivot to a product which, due to the alleged affordability, will have more demand, thus making it even more difficult to keep up? Seems to me like it'd be a better call to figure out how to keep up first? maybe this will help with that anyway as there's less craftsmanship to it. We'll see

Have you heard about the boom on Mizar 5?
Regardless of any of the surrounding details this does look like a pretty rad piece of hardware and at that price point would come into a interesting part of the market while continuing to grow the interestering ruby ball vape ecosystem . I just love to see more desk tops, especially in the more budget oriented realm!

Horsin around
kinda torn here.

on the one hand, doesnt hurt to have another 20mm coil vape out there.

on the other hand, I would have expected more of a "terptorch tip kit and stand for your soldering iron" approach from Brian. cause as we've seen with the pinky: PIDs are the main upfront cost with these vapes and can be a fucking nightmare with all their connectors, pinouts, non-existant grounding and price fluctuations that dont represent any actual "value" in better soldering or the before-mentioned grounding.

but I totally see why he ended up with the current design on this.
he's giving people easy access to play with and/or replace their balls (thats a bit finicky on the terptorch and just non-existant with the hotrod) while assembly and/or packaging is so easy that it doesnt even have to be handed by Brian himself - its just 2 metal parts and a bunch of balls. and hey, its just a bunch of parts, clearly not a vape that would be hit by the PACT shipping restrictions or create any fuss if customs looked at the package...

If he ever starts selling them pre-assembled with a PID he selling you the performance (lets scratch aesthetics for a moment) of a hotrod with only like 5% of the manual work he needed to put into a hotrod. he's also avoiding the horrible handling of a terptorch in use or the wonderful world of cable strength vs magnet strength that didnt align for some of the hotrods out there.

so while I feel a bit disappointed, I'm not the indicator of success and at the end of the day he's creating a nice drop-in solution for other enthusiasts with pre-existing PIDs that just doesnt satisfy the DIY-itch of some cranky dude thats WAY too much into innuendo jokes and happily remembers the good old days when he spent all his time playing with that red hot ceramic rod and loads of big balls... in his terptorch :brow: 6mm right at the tip, baby...

I have a hot rod and i am going to for sure pick this bad boy at lunch. The hot rod is everything i could ask for and more. I believe who you buy one of Brian's product you are not only getting a crazy vape but the best customer service I have every experienced. he cares about his product and the customers so if your considering his work just do it you will not regret it.

He'll have unexpected competition now (Pinky, etc) but there's got to be a market out there for something like this, an unbreakable, unspillable, simple-to-assemble head for standard coils, assuming he finds the right price. I'm sure CH is confident in their screen system, but this would be more secure.

Looks like Cannabis Hardware, via Secreagent’s TiTi hack totally beat Old Head to it. The BZero, the TiTi, the Pinky…all DIY-ish that do the same thing as well if not better I’m sure. Talk about wrong place wrong time. The CH BZero is exactly THIS and is sold out. I don’t see a Market for this at all anymore, lol. Unless it’s $129.99. Anymore…why? I have a TiTi in a 16mm coil and a Flowerpot BZero. All under $300 total. This guy totally missed the boat on pretty much EXACTLY what he was designing. Plain and simple. You snooze you lose.

Any word on this one?
Seems like it's lagging behind other similar devices.
According to his Instagram, it’s looking like a June release for this one, potentially.

I would also agree that Brian missed the boat on this one, but I’m sure there will be a bunch of heads still interested in getting one just because.

Fair enough cool news, thank you!

I have a terp torch and a hot rod, so it is tempting to complete the old head trio collection. Both the terp torch and hot rod are boss heavy hitters ofcourse, but provide a considerably different hit and experience despite there similarities in design. I would imagine the freight train might feel more different since it uses a coil instead of a ceramic core for heating. I am especially curious what the difference in hit smoothness is.

I don't have the TT but this is tempting. No doubt more powerful then the HR but how it would compare to similar heads is the question for me, things like airflow and heat retention, I guess. If it's not remarkable, B0 head setups can be had for less than half. If it performs especially well it could claim a safety edge. He could let Troy test it and see how it holds up.
