No tree this year...

Never had it... never will !

Christmas died many decades ago to me once the greed and commercialism set in. I do miss the week long gathering of family & friends sharing their year past and plans for the next. When laughing and general happiness was THE gift.

I kinda now just eagerly await Jan 3rd.

Holiday? What Holiday ? ... sure not feelin' it here either, thinking it'll just be another day on the calender.
,

It'll be that way for me, more or less, this year.

Miss the family thing the most. The feasting thing was great too.

Family diaspora.

Some friends and I are planning a wilderness festivus in the middle of winter. Maybe I'll be feeling it then....there will be beer.

Thinking of reaching out to some of the lonely old people that I know too. That could be us some day.

I'll enjoy the days off from work...

but, no. Putting up decorations has no real meaning for us, at this point in our lives. And we have cats!

We will go to our family event, on Xmas Eve, and give the grandkids some (quality) gifts (we usually do books, music instruments, and/or classic wooden/fabric toys). We've requested no gifts for ourselves, as we still need to get rid of more crap! Downsize mode.

I won't even go to the mall until after...

Naw, It's Not just being a 'scrooge' for me. Everyone gets a gift from me even though a couple get little gifts like Food and electricity every month anyways and can't bother to ever say "Hey thanx, Don't know where we would be without ya" Then i sit and watch on X-Mas as they give at least a thousand bucks worth of gifts to people they see once or twice a year like it's the Law of the land or something.

It all seems pretty stupid to me at this time in my life since I give of what I have 365 days a year, now if it was still treated as a Holy Day and not just another holiday I may feel differently.

:bigleaf:<<< My Christ Mass tree

EDIT; Now at least we get to watch some great real Football games( called "soccer" here for some reason) on Boxing day.

Scrooge thread

Bahh.

Not really. I appreciate the spirit of the holiday but not so much the way it's been corrupted.

As a kid, even if there weren't presents involved it would've been an awesome holiday. I'm not so sure I feel the same way about it these days.

I don't begrudge those who get into it either. But getting divorced and having your kids grow up and move out gives one the time reflect on it a bit more. Exclude the materialism from it and what does it leave over for you? That's what matters.

I guess I'm the rarity here? I love Christmas. (Almost as much as Halloween :p)

We have a fresh cut tree every year (this is a state that grows them so it supports local economy). I decorate the whole house and put fresh greens everywhere; inside and out. I buy presents but don't expect anything. And I bake my fool head off and give it all away.

When the kids were younger, we would go to a soup kitchen and work on Christmas and Thanksgiving. It's something that I'd like to see us start up again. And we also would go to nursing homes and visit people who don't get visitors... take them a little goody tray.

It's all about the spirit of giving and loving eachother. That's the beauty of Christmas.

I was born and raised a Jehovah's Witness, so was denied Christmas and every other holiday, even my own birthday. Now that I am no longer a JW, Christmas is a big deal to us. Hubby says he is trying to make up for all the years I didn't have it. We always go all out, as much as we can. :)

This is a big year present wise for the cats. (we have 10 now after the 3 recent deaths) They got a new cat tree, and they love it! (not our Christmas tree, one from Petco, lol) They got it early. The dogs all got new Kongs. Yes, I wrapped their presents and put them under the tree.

I would put up decorations for you...

I really do love the whole "festival of lights" thing, lots of decorations, and I spend hours watching the light shows some people do...

... I just reject crass commercialization of it. and, since we no longer have kids underfoot, and do have a cat that WOULD destroy it all, it's just simpler to not.

I love the lights too, always have. We are going to go look at all the houses with their Christmas decorations tomorrow night. We do that every year, our family tradition. :)

I agree about the commercialization. I was pissed seeing Christmas stuff out at stores before Halloween. :disgust:

This is the first time we've had a tree in years, and it was a big deal for us. Putting decorations on as a family and just having a good time checking out all the different ornaments we've collected, and broke, over the years. We have some cool ones like from when the Twins won the World Series, or the ones we've made ourselves.

I do wish Christmas was more focused on what's around the tree then what's under it. For our family, we are all on completely different schedules but it's a great time to take a few days vacation and just lay low with the people you love.

I'm not huge on giving gifts, or receiving them to be honest, but I did get my mother and girlfriend some great gifts this year. Some people focus on others more than themselves, so it's a good time to make it about them.

Be safe with the lights! Those things can get sketchy. We went driving looking at all the beautiful Christmas lights last week, I think we'll go again before Christmas Day.

I just realized that I actually adore Christmas...

EveryDayAmnesiac - THANKS for ADDING TO MY HOLIDAY HAPPINESS.....A 'like' just wasn't enough for that post. There really should be a button for 'Like to Infinity'.

Not shooting for a Hallmark moment or anything but....Growing up we never celebrated Christmas but were surrounded by those who did. On Christmas morning when everyone was opening presents around the tree with their family.... the streets I played on where never so empty and I felt that same emptiness.

For over 33 years my wife and I have been making a huge deal about Christmas because of me trying to make up for the past and I still can't get enough. We have ornaments with dates on them for every one of those years...First Christmas Together, Baby's First Christmas, First Christmas in the New House, etc...and we've developed some much loved traditions surrounding the holiday, like ugly pajamas and a huge breakfast on Christmas morning. Even though my babies aren't babies anymore we still all get together to put up the tree the first Saturday after Thanksturkey, reminisce about the ornaments and past Christmases and my favorite .... the biggest crass commercialization day of the year....Christmas morning! Even the dog gets a new pair of ugly pajamas/costume and presents in his sock and under the tree. I hope I can continue to make up for those missed Christmases until I'm 100 or more but it still won't be enough.

This was my expression at 3 seeing the Christmas tree and it hasn't changed much since, lol.
It's great that you've managed to maintain some child-like wonder towrds the holiday.
TBH about it, up until a couple of years ago, I used to be pretty enthusiastic about it too. I'm just kind of at a point in life where the spark has been extinguished.

What I don't get is why people create an environment of stress over holidays in general and Xmas in particular. My ex used to go into full-on bitch mode at around this time each year. That didn't add much to the joy. The politics of gift giving is something we could all probably live without.

Now the kids are older and see christmas for what it has become, there is not much interest in our home this year.
Plus not being a religious type, I find it a little hypocritical to get on all the hype trains that arrive around christmas and easter.
