The yellowing bag effect that Volcano (and other bag users) see is not tar. The yellowing is caused by accumulation of the resin (the "goo" in marijuana trichomes - cannibinoids, etc...) that has been vaporized. This stuff is soluble in alcohol or oil. In a bag (or a vapor whip or vapor pipe) it accumulates.

By the definition commonly used in smoking studies, that resin is tar. Read the thread again.

Well then there is a huge difference between resin "tar" and smoke tar because one is amber and the other is black and smells like ass.

All particulate matter in a smoking study is called tar, so the quotation marks are uncalled for. The difference you refer to is the point of these studies, namely that the tars produced during vapourizing are reduced and have a different composition.

I think we should stop with the meaning of the word tar, since it is quite obvious what the OP meant with the use of the word, which should be the main concern: proper understanding of the question posed.

Not to mention the thread got sidetracked quite a few posts ago.

Smoke tar, the one that as carcinogenic properties is not found or found in residual concentrations not enough to cause harm to the lungs, according to the latest scientific data as well as the anedoctal evidence presented throughout the FC forum.

The yellow substance you see accumulate in bags, stems, whips and glass is the THC condensation commonly refered as wand hash or thc resin, etc.

If you still want to eliminate potential threats whilst maintaining your vaping habit just use temps lower than 190C and water filtration. Also, taking breaks will help the body regenerate.

Other than that, just quit! The healthiest alternative is not really an alternative, at least for me. :2c:

The answer to the original question as written isn't possible without drawing the distinction, since nucleo separates tars from THC/CBD/CBN.

There is no tar-free temperature. You can minimize the undesirable tars by using low temperatures. The reason high temperatures produce clouds is the increase in particulates, or tars. This is also why high temperature vapour tastes worse than low temperature vapour: it has more crap in it. A lot of people don't want to hear this because they are convinced you must have clouds.

He separates because of lack of better knowledge i believe. I also did not know that chemically speaking THC/CBN/CBD are also tars.. but i did understand the focus of his concern.

Thanks for that last tidbit of info, i am always learning or correcting whatever inconsistencies i had in my knowledge. One of the reasons i spend so much time here. ;)

The thicker clouds also contain significantly more water vapor (even dried plants can have up to 30% water in them still). When you're vaporizing at higher temperatures, you're desiccating the plant matter on top of vaporizing the resin in the trichomes. While that gets you more terpenes (more taste), it probably doesn't increase tar much - to a certain point.

The "thc goo" is part of the tars or particulate matter, so by definition increasing it in the vapour increases particulates and hence gives thicker vapour, or clouds. That aside, I'd be interested to hear how clouds can be created at lower temperatures through better vapourizer design. I'm assuming you don't mean by simple accumulation and concentration. That's probably a separate thread, however.

Terpenes are more volatile than THC/CBD/CBN, so they are driven off at lower temperatures. This is why low temperature vapourizing gives better flavour than high temperatures.

lower temps/less tar is pertainent, me thinks -- opening up the herb and exposing more surface area to the heat; an oven type structure that surrounds the herb and can melt the plant wax even at a sub-vaporization temperature; and, an airflow that remains at a constant temperature.

That's how i do it. In fact, for the last several months i've dropped my vape temp from 385°F to 375°F and still get plenty of clouds --- when the herb is decent.

Ahh yes. Thanks for the correction, I got that reversed. Terpenes vaporize first and cannibinoids later. Forgetting my education these days... I must be getting older.

depends on the terpenes. I was reading this the other day.

for example pulegone, which is often a fairly low concentration terpenoid in MJ, doesn't boil till 224 c so I would assume we get very little of this terp at vaping temperatures. There are a few mentioned with boiling temps above 200 C (terpineol-4-ol, α-terpineol, borneol), as well as many below.

It does seem that the lower temp ones are more flavourful though, or at least the nicer tasting. I wonder why or if that is the case.

If you're vaping correctly and not combusting or smoking at all you're only going to get THC and you won't get tar at all.

ok fuck all the reports. i been smoking since i was 15 and until i switched to vapes i always coughed up little black dots in my flem. I am 44 now and been vaping for 6 years. i am a heavy smoker and i work out 2 hrs a day. My work out was seriously hampered by smoking thru bong, bowls and joints. they made my lungs feel like they were coated in concrete when i worked out. since vaping IF i cough no black dots and i no longer feel like my lungs are coated and heavy. I smoke only concentrates and keep my temp at between 160 and 170C and belive this is the safest way i can smoke. My last chest Xray showed i had normal everything and i had it done cause i wanted to get better insurance and was worried about lying on the form as to wether i smoked or not.

Although vaping leaves much less tar than smoking, i've only been vapour free for 4 days now and I can definitely notice I can like breathe easier or something. So I can somewhat empathize about your concrete coated lungs, although obviously not to that extent. And although vapour is much better for the lungs, the massive increase in cannabinoids i'm not sure is that great for the brain/body although i'll take it over the gross smoke anyday.
