No Luck with Edibles

So Im a daily smoker (vaper?), and ive tried as many edibles methods as I can possible think of (ive tried decarbing, freezing, coconut oil, brownies, firecrackers, abv sandwiches, stem hot chocolate, etc) and I NEVER get good results.

Ill kill enough herb to get me high for a week vaping, but all it does is tear up my stomach and give me a very mild buzz. I don't understand it.

I live in an illegal state, so no dispensary edibles unfortunately, but Ive decided that I'm giving up on making my own. Any input guys?

From what you type, 3 things come to mind...

* You may have extracted most goodies already. How dark is your ABV?
* Your tolerance may be very high lessening the impact of the ABV.
* Overcooking of the edibles can boil off goodies, leaving little effect.

I know it's a risk, as no dispensaries, but have you tried to decarb fresh bud and make a small edible?

Yes, most of the time ive tried to make edibles has been with fresh herb, although my methods werent very precise and I was always pretty frugal with the herb. ive just never had good results, even with the coconut oil. I get a mild buzz, but the upset stomach isnt worth it. Ive recently heard of water curing, do you think that would help?

If it really bothers your stomach, water curing is one solution. Canna capsules another as the capsule could pass your stomach before dissolving, if you got the right caps.

When this happens, is there any food that settles your stomach?

I used to have stomach problems as well with canna coconut oil made with dried, or fresh herb. When i started making it with bubble or qwiso, that was no issue anymore.
The resulting endproduct when using bubble, is much lighter, both in color and taste.
It will still have this light green glow to it, but not that deep, dark green that comes from whole plant matter, and the taste is just lovely and smooth, you'll barely notice it when added to a (soon to be) edible.
I never decarb material before, just put the bubble together with the coconut oil and about half the amount of water in the double boiler and let it sit on lowest flame for 10 hours or so.

Im interested in trying tinctures, is there a specific method that you recommend?

There are a couple different methods that are used. One is with vegetable glycerin and another is with high proof alcohol. I haven't tried the glycerin method myself but it's quite popular. Here is an article on glycerin extraction.

Basically what you are doing is heating the alcohol (or glycerin) with the cannabis on low heat for 4 - 8 hours. I use the Magical Butter machine for this since the temp is controlled and you can decarb the herb right in the machine. Others decarb in the oven and then use the sous vide method in a crock pot where your container with your product rests in a water bath at low temp.

If you search 'tincture' or 'green dragon' here on the forum, you will also find some information on different methods of making tincture. It's really about finding a method that works for you. Here is one that uses the basic Master Wu recipe, but uses ABV. You could just switch out the ABV for decarbed herb.

Cannabis has little cystoliths on it which can irritate your stomach. You want to filter the cannabis out to reduce stomach upset. Some people it bothers more than others. I can't tolerate it much myself. I have to filter it out. Usually I will use trim, and butter or coconut butter, along with water, then put into the refrigerator for 24 hours and pull out the solidified matter and dispose of the trim and stinky water.

Sounds like potency issues among a few others.

Quick questions:

1. How long have you been cooking? I noticed "stem hot chocolate" made it in there, not to offend. I'm still learning myself ;)

2. What temperatures/times did you use for your coconut oil? What did you use to filter it?

3. What recipes did you use? What temperature/time did they call for?

4. What recipe had the best results?

5.How dark is your ABV? If your vaping it at max temp all the time then you'll need a lot more than you would think.

Are you able to do a qwet/qwiso wash to cook with abv concentrate? If you are not familiar with it, it is a simple method of concentrating your abv down to more or less a tarry oil. I normally make my tincture using a qwiso extract that i water cure for a week, hot water bath off 1/2 the everclear, no filter needed if you filter the qwiso and dry it properly.

These may help us get to the root of your other edible problems a little quicker while you try a tincture/swamp water :rockon:

Me n wife vape most sessions on med and finish at a high temp..abv always dark brown..fist few batches not effective when making firecrackers..bumping up to 3.5 g of abv did the trick finally I also marinate my abv the night before w olive oil did this and wife ate the whole firecracker dam near had a panic attack..lol

Nice, seems like the oil payed off! You should try cooking your abv into oil using a small, oven safe bowl followed by a quick filtration through an unbleached coffee filter/cheese cloth/muslin cloth. Like the bowls they sell for chip dip/fish dip/etc, if you can find one of those made out of good quality stainless steel.

-Preheat your oven to 230-240°F (Check the temperature with an oven thermometer placed RIGHT next to where you will place the small bowl, once its preheated take a look at what the thermometer says. My oven runs 10°F hot on the middle rack)
-Take your abv, grind it up to a coarse or fine powder (Finer=more filtering), add it to your bowl.
-Add just enough coconut oil to JUST BARELY cover the abv with a thin layer, just enough to make sure your abv wont burn. Then mix this up with a very small spoon/metal skewer.
-Then wrap that little bowl in tin foil, put it in the oven for about 2 hours
-Remove bowl from oven, allow to cool for 10-20 minutes.
-Filter into desired container (Eye dropper, vial, mason jar) using a funnel+coffee filter.

Depending on the amount used (I need 40-45ml of coconut oil for a brownie mix- which taste amazing) you can use it however you want. I prefer capsules for easy dosing (I.E lets say I take 5ml of oil, thats 5 capsules)

If you want a more potent oil (For capsules) make some QWISO, dry it out, then make the coconut oil using the qwiso. Hell, since you use high temps maybe look into qwiso and then cooking with the qwiso.

I've found for my tolerance that 1g of abv in this recipie is 1-3 doses of potent oil, depending on how much you vape your bud. I stick to low/medium temps on my PAX.

Wow, when I make ABV butter and cookies with it, the result is hardcore! I challenge anyone to eat two of them and not be severely stoned. I'm a pretty heavy user too, about a qtr. oz a week. I take about 21 grams of ABV which is fairly well used, some yellow in it but not much, and throw 3 sticks of butter in with the 21 grams in a crockpot and simmer on low for 10-14 hours. Strain through a coffee filter and try and squeeze out the material, then you have two sticks of canna butter to cook with (one stick gets lost to material and cooking). Those Betty Crocker chocolate chip cookies are perfect, they take one stick of butter and an egg and you can cook them a bit lower temp. It always makes very, very potent cookies!

so im seeing alot of suggestions but nothing too scientifically tested (no offense to anyone). I too have struggled with making edibles and have found the following rules help out (especially w/ my high tolerance):

#1: TRIM is awesome. doesn't have to be bud. however, the better ur trim/bud, the better the "high". either way you'll be stoned...like stoned. hard. haha.

#2: DECARBING. this could mean a whole bunch of crap, but basically after many tests, i've concluded it means "heat the friggin weed in an oven at 240F for 1 hr". i like to cover/wrap my buds in parchment before putting in the oven to prevent any possible scorching.

#3: SOUSVIDE/MAGICAL BUTTER MACHINE. you need either one of these devices to produce quality results. however, if not, just keep this in mind. weed needs about 3-4 hrs to infuse into butter properly and about 1-2 hrs for oil. you can use the same temperature for both but the weed has to infuse at a consistent temp of 160F for the entire remaining time. a consistent temp of 160F will gently infuse most of the thc from your plant matter w/o killing much of it. Therefore ending up with close to 90% of your thc still in tact. (Google: sous vide. you can find many lower priced sous vide machines for cheaper these days. sous vide is good for many things actually, but in this case it makes this process 100% painless. almost like set it and forget it.

do not infuse trim/bud into oil/butter at temps higher than 250F. above 250F kills thc and all the goodies. keep it consistently at 230-240F and you'll be happy to know most of your thc is still in your product.

once you've made the butter and bake other things, the higher baking temps cannot be avoided, and may in fact help bring out a better high in your end product by doing so. (think of how fire flames hitting buds cause amazing highs, lol, idk makes sense to me.)



at any rate, if you're confused at all just remember:

#1) 1 HOUR AT 240F (CAN BE DONE IN OVEN OR IN SOUS VIDE WATER BATH, EITHER WAY IT HAS TO BE 240) TO ACTIVATE THE THC IN THE BUD SO YOU CAN GET HIGH

AND THEN

#2) 1-4 HOURS AT 160F TO TRANSFER THE ACTIVATED THC INTO BUTTER OR OIL. 1-2 HOURS FOR OIL. 3-4 HOURS FOR BUTTER.

GOOD LUCK! (oh yea and grind up your weed real good AFTER the decarb, not before. the butter/oil cannot reach parts of the plant if they're not exposed.)

almost forgot, lastly, in order to know how high you get from an edible you have to calculate dosage. so a good way to measure this or estimate is for example: 1g bud =1,000mg bud. and since most weed is about 15% THC that means 15% of 1,000mg of bud = about 150 mg thc.

low tolerance user needs about 40-50mg of thc to get stoned
avg tolerance user needs about 60-70mg of thc to get stoned
high tolerance user needs about 75-100+mg of thc to get stoned
really high tolerance user....make sure you add kief and/or 2-3g hash to the butter lol. i dont add wax tho because wax is made from butane and chemicals. dont wanna eat chemicals, yuck.

so if you put a 1/4 oz of bud into a stick of butter, 8tbsp butter=1 stick so each 1tbsp butter = 131mg thc. the whole stick would be 1,050mg thc (since 1/4oz = 7g = 7,000mg so then 15% of 7,000mg = about 1,050mg thc)

Hey OP,

Just a suggestion for next time you go to cook, you might want to consider some sunflower lecithin because it aids in potency in your product and also allows your body to absorb the effects faster. I'd recommend like almost 2 teaspoons per half-o from my cooking experience and what has been successful for other people. And don't underestimate this method because I have read lots of people don't feel the potency of edibles until they try it with this, I'm not a marketing guy or anything I just legit believe in this stuff as a good emulsifier (& it's healthy!)

I just put about 5 teaspoons of fairly dark ABV onto a graham cracker with nutella, and then another nutella layer on top of the ABV. It got me fairly stoned, but without the head buzz as I vaped that already. Try using your ABV and don't be frugal, you will get good results without having to use excessive (or any) amounts of fat which can cause an upset stomach. ABV can be eaten as is without further processing. Try using it as garnish.

That's nice, I live in a country where coming by good dank is hard so I have been vaping until its dark. I miss the good old days of mason jars filled to the brim with wonderful pungent potent jary mane :shrug::leaf::zzz:
