Anyone remember "Last Starfighter"? Yeah... so, are all these drones and VR-capable controllers a portent of things to come, and are the clubs/Youtube/GoPro-ing all ways for the gifted to be identified for those upcoming events....

.... hmmm....

@nihil ~ The operator is not really controlling Lilly but just giving it simple commands (follow, lead, circle, stay put, return home), the Lilly is autonomous with regards to actual flying and just follows the user's bracelet. It is important to note, there is no obstacle detection with this so it can run into things (unlike the new DJI Phantom3 series).

Lilly is really just a great flying family/vacation action cam. IMO FPV stuff is a ton of fun but quite a bit more challenging if you want to fly fully manual without the aid of gyro stabilization.

I still fly a ton of acrobatics, giant scale and night flyers by site, commonly called LOS (line of sight), but we all get the FPV bug.

Here is a trailer from one of our past events; gadgets don't get much cooler than drones:

Thanks for the videos. Looks like I'm going to be doing some research this weekend.

I should have quoted your relevant post regarding drones. The Lilly I get, and I am very impressed with the concept. Not sure if it is something I'd invest too much money into though.

Your post on the drone race had me floored. I'm really digging the concept of FPV control of a drone. Your post today has me motivated to start doing some research into a new hobby. What would a decent rig set me back? $1k, $5k?

Also, to contribute to this thread, I had the pleasure of trying out a FretLight a few weeks back. It's a guitar or bass that has an LED panel built into the fretboard. You can basically load up a scale, the relevant notes light up, and you play in scale by site. It will also light up the notes if you want to play an existing song. Very cool for learning.

I'm a drummer that also plays synths and I suck at guitar.. don't even enjoy playing it. Within 10 minutes I was doing decent freestyle solo's playing along with one of the software's existing songs. Its one drawback is for the fret to light up, you need it hooked up via USB to a computer. Without the hookup, it acts as a standard electric guitar or bass.

I would expect to $200 for the aircraft and electronics, then there are a few items you will need to buy in the beginning that make entry somewhat costly- like transmitter, video monitors or goggles, and batteries.

I fly an Emax250 that I built myself and cost $180, and I am eyeballing the Vortex that comes out of the box as a ready to fly tank.

If you are in Cali, I can set you up with a buddy to fly with and he will get you all tee'd up.

New things? Windows 10, and it's great, if you have the right build. :disgust: Build 10130 really stinks.

Don't beta test Win10. My gmail app just stopped working for no reason. I may have to back up a couple builds until I get to a more stable one. This sucker gets released end of July. Come on guys, get this shit fixed. You're running out of time.

In Microsoft's defense, this is the first Windows version I have actually LIKED, and really look forward to the final version. It will be cool as hell.

I prefer to avoid being an early adopter when possible. I let you beta-testers work out the bugs before I jump on board :D

(Yes there are exceptions like the Grasshopper Vape, but otherwise, I typically skip "V1.0" of anything recently released)

I've beta tested vaporizers here too, and that's a lot more fun than beta testing programs. I've been beta testing for 2 decades, and I always bitch when things get wanky, but I still love doing it.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your efforts in not only beta testing, but reporting your findings.

Beta tester's are an unappreciated bunch of people. I know I often ask people to beta testers my products, and I value all feedback I can get (good and bad). Without it, I couldn't make a better finished product!

I have had a Pro 2 since the day it came out. I love it. Use it like a laptop most days but the Surface Pro's are the best tablet made in my opinion. What I am jealous of is the power plug on the 3. It is much better than mine. My wife's laptop is on its last leg and I'm trying to convince her she needs a Surface 3.

Almost there...
@FlyingLow

What would you recommend as a good beginners quad to start with?
I used to build and fly gliders, both silent and electric, then messed around with the dual rotor copters and lost interest.
These new quads look like a lot of fun!
Preferably indoor/outdoor.

I think you should start a thread dedicated to quads!
So i do not derail this thread or fill your PM box!

I have gotten a handful of requests for more info on drones, and am going to open up a new thread to help guide people to the best quad/aircraft for them.

It is a lot like vaping, and all have different uses/purposes. Ill edit this post and add a link tonight, but I am going to offer up a handful of recommended beginner quads with inexpensive and easily accessible replacement parts.

:D
So excited to get more folks into the hobby!

I loved The Last Starfighter! I was big into video games when it came out. I loved Tron too. I wonder how long it be before I can buy a light cycle....

Decided to buy a Syma X5C-1 as my first quad to practise with, ordered and shipped!
Couldn't wait for it to arrive so off to the hobby store...
There they had a few choices and i went with the Dromido KODO with camera.
Neat little flier and now i cannot wait to get the Syma and then build my own!
Photography and video looks like a lot of fun and where i live there is s huge escarpment with the whole city and lake below, very beautiful!

Excited for your thread and more to join!

I'm a HUGE gadget geek, but I typically try to stay behind by 1 generation so I don't have to play "beta tester" for the company. Here's a gift my wife got this past Christmas.

The Anova Sous Vide
http://www.amazon.com/Anova-Sous-Vide-Immersion-Circulator/dp/B00UET2UI2
20130916-anova-6.jpg

It's a tiny device to convert any pot (or modified cooler) into a sous vide!

For those who don't know, these cooking devices were once very expensive and used only in expensive restaurants. It allows you to precisely cook food to a desired temperature. If you like your steak medium rare at 132F, you can easily cook to a perfect 132F every time.

(Naturally, I've also used it to make ABV Cannabutter, and was amazed at the results. There was almost no smell until after I finished cooking and opened the bag!)

Coincidentally, the Anova SV started it's life as a kickstarter campaign!
I got sucked into this one... we've had ours a few days and used it a couple of times already. Its an amazing device and will change the way you cook forever.

Cant wait to decarb some flower in this thing.

Wow, your relationship has to be in a sad state of affairs, pun intended, to even need one of these.

I bought one also. Did chicken breasts and I should have added more spices so were a B+

Not sure what next, salmon or ... ribs which have recipes for 48+ hours, yikes.

I even browsed at cooking torches today to brown meats after sous vide cooking them.
Bed, Bath, and Beyond had a basic and upgrade torch---basic big enough for browning??
I just browned the chicken breasts in a pan with butter and garlic, which seemed fine.

I think I'm going to like it a lot. I need some killer recipes to try to get my wife on board as she thinks I'm nuts to get this..........

My wife got this behemoth torch ("Messermeister FT-912 Cheflamme Culinary Torch")
http://www.amazon.com/Messermeister-FT-912-Cheflamme-Culinary-Torch/dp/B002ZJXMDQ

It blows through butane like crazy, but works great to quickly torch the food.

Ever eat poach eggs? The sous vide can perfectly poach the egg in it's shell.

I rarely have poached eggs cuz if they aren't perfectly done (very runny yolk and just barely done white) then they suck!
I'll try to find time and temp for poached eggs and give it a whirl.
