Musicians. What instruments do you play?

Did you know you can change the speed of play-back of You Tube videos by adjusting speed with the gear, located bottom, rightish. Keeps same pitch. Makes it easier to learn.
I knew this, but it never occurred to use that in this manner. Great tip!
An iPhone is a whole production studio these days :)
been that way for years! I actually downloaded fruity loops for my android last week. Forgot about it. Bout to install it n see how it compares to the CPU version

One thing I learned today. I for the First time, I Brought my guitar outside to practice as I was grilling. I had a strange problem. I could SEE the strings like I've never seen them before. It through me off so much I sucked more than usual during that time. I have terrible eyes, n it's dark in my room where I practice. Sunlight. Wow.... *Goes n grabs 2 new lightbulbs for my room*

Indeed it has! Thats why I got a fancy phone years back but found I cant stand how fiddly the screen becomes trying to do anything more than the most basic.

I prefer big knobs I can touch ;) :D

I'll be very intrigued to hear how FL works for you on Android. Latency always used to be a bit of an issue on Android.

EDIT: So, theres enough of us. When do we start the NFC album? :)

Lol. Seriously. I could imagine our sound would be extremely unique. 1 of a kind. NFC. actually a cool band name. A few layers of meaning in there.
You are actually better off if you play with eyes closed. Don`t look at the instrument any more then absolutely necessary to play.
true. But it was kind of confusing, disconcerting that I was seeing the strings in such a, new light? I have a long ways to go before I get there!

There is a plugin for chrome called Transpose. It enables transposing, pitch shifting, playback speed adjustment with pitch correction and looping.

Yeah, almost any phone today is a much stronger computer than the first pc I tried to record multi-track audio with.

For auto generation to practice with I used to use Band-in-a-Box, I think one of the early developers of algorithms for basic midi tracks; nowhere near as advanced about user input as something like Generative Music, which is Star Trek territory in my mind (speaking of theramins...).

For recording and processing I do use computer and a pretty good array of standard (digital) effects, and backing instrumentation like bass, drums, keys. Over the past 20 years far more time (multiple mountains of learning curves) and money has gone into tech like that, that is my vas. My setup is still not very fancy by most standards.

My greater pleasure is sitting and playing an acoustic instrument like the guitar. You can feel the vibrations come through your body. Singing does it for me, too even if just in the shower (which I've found to be an extremely creative space; something in my mind cuts loose a little...). I guess these are what qualify as my meditations.

***All that said, it's also a great rush to play live with other people, in a garage or a performance!!! That really gets you firing on all cylinders!!!

I can't wait until I'm decent enough to jam with others. The feeling MUST be unreal/so gratifying!

@EmDeemo that soundbox is insane! If I was doing sound work for movies, cartoons etc. I imagine them using a device such as that. I'm looking forward to hearing a sample of your creations!

I started playing clarinet in the 4th grade, private lessons, summer band, the whole scene. I had a book of duets and would record one part on a cassette and play along with it.

After a while I started to resent my parents making me practice 30 minutes a day, so I would just play the cassette and read comic books.

Did you ever go back to it? Clarinet sounds lovely :)

Yeah, I went on to acquire an alto sax and also played tenor. 7th grade jazz band is where I first got high. We would smoke at lunch time, come back and put sax mouthpieces on tubas, etc. Our band had Jill Sobule (I kissed a girl) on guitar and my bud Paul Taylor on lead alto. Jill would do her Pete Townshend act behind the bandleader's back to crack us up.

9th grade we moved to Florida for a year, where the kids started playing instruments much later than we did. My brother & I were years ahead of the others, and we got lazy. And then there was this nazi band leader who had come in 2nd in the previous FL state marching band contest and had something to prove. I was only interested in the jazz band, but this required me to be in the marching band and regular band. Marching band required us to give up lunchtimes for practice, and even some Saturday mornings. I could never count my steps and play my instrument at the same time, so I never played a note!

I said fuckit after this year and stopped playing.

I play the Native American Flute ... or, if not made by a card-carrying registered member of a federally recognized tribe, such a flute is known as a Native American STYLE flute.
I picked it up about 20 years ago, but got really immersed in it 10 years ago when I was in Heart Failure and had an LVAD in me while waiting for a donor heart. Long story short = I believe my extensive playing of this simple flute helped my heart to heal well enough such that I never did need a transplant. I still have my native (albeit Anglo) heart.

I can't read a note of music but this instrument doesn't hold that against me. It's not for playing others' music, but for self expression and it's natural pentatonic scale makes creating simple melodies pretty easy. Unlike the silver transverse concert flute, which require a challenging manipulation of the air-steam via pursing one's lips into a controlled embouchure, this Native American flute (NAF) only requires a gentle, natural breath. If you want to learn more, I enjoy teaching others - feel free to reach out. I am an active participant in the forums at The Flute Portal (you will recognize my user name!)

The video here was shot at a local radio station where my drumming friend and I were guests ... promoting my friend's Raptor Rehab Center. We played a half dozen "songs" ... all improv, "music in the moment". My buddy liked this one and he suggested we call it "Visions". I still haven't really "learned" it ... it comes out different every time I try to recapture the original, which is fine = no worries! Native Flute Video of Mono Loco

Edit: NAF-AS is real, too - different keys, different wood species, different makers, ... I have dozens in my own collection, plus dozens more "in stock" for resale at local events or for classes I host. I never collected Hot Wheels, Baseball Cards, Marbles, or anything as a kid ... I now collect flutes, I guess!

OK, I'm gonna get a funky drum beat and bass line together in about a months time. I'll try and keep it vague and with not much going on in it. I'll post it in here and if anyone wants to record something to go with it, that would be a fine thing :) Maybe we can crowd source a track of some description together? :)

I dont expect it'll work out but it might be fun and distracting attempting it :)

I'm now 61 and most of my life i've been playing Air-Guitar, i've ended up quite good at it really!

I play guitar and i suppose i'm around the intermediate level. Years ago a friend and i became buskers in Brisbane, each with acoustic guitars and i did the singing. We were called
The Bollock Brothers![nice family-friendly name.]

Favourite guitarists are Jeff Beck, Brian May, Devin Townsend, Dave Gilmour.

Drums muthafuckaz!!! Give it to me hard or give it to me slick! :brow: Don't matter what style as long as it kicks!

Ska ruined horns for me! Fela brought me back! If I had to listen to no music or ska...NO MUSIC!!!

Seen a lot of great technically proficiant players but some lack depth, feeling & soul. Combine them all & now your on a roll!

Drums are the shit, but the vibraphone is the most amazing instrument ever created!

Dilemma, dilemma. My guitar is only 6 months old. The D string has developed a buzz. I had heard about this phenomena but more experienced now I knew it was off immediately. Out of nowhere from the 1st to 5th fret. Driving me nuts. A friend says I should change the strings. So I ordered a few sets n a Peg winder. Should I be upset? Or this is normal? As a beginner should my strings wear so quick??

On another note. (pun intended), I've been microdoaing psilocybin for the past 4 days. Wow. Day 1 at one point I couldn't concentrate n play. Picked it up later in the evening, couldn't put the guitar down. Following days same thing. The amount of attention to focus, the desire to practice, so strong. Has me thinking when not abused and in extreme moderation, it's possible psilocybin is more therapeutic than thc/cbd?

Well, far out, as we used to say.

The string buzzing does not stem from use of psychedelics. Those would be more harmonious vibrations with colors added to the sound, not a simple buzz; that's usually weed.

I don't think it's string age either, unless there's some obvious fraying of windings or such (that would be very rare).
But at 6 months it's time for a change anyway, they just get dull-sounding and don't stay in tune as well as new ones.

It is possible the buzz lies in the way the string is seating in the bridge, and changing strings may correct the issue. If not, a closer look at the 'set-up' may be in order. Could just need some tweaking as it settles down from factory-new to older wood, etc., that's not unusual. Maybe a simple neck truss rod adjustment?
