Looking for first vape, would love some advice.

Hi everyone.

I'm looking to purchase my first and hopefully my last (haaaahahahaha) vape.

...it won't be the last I'm sure, but I'd like to get as close to perfect as I can straight off the bat.

I've done so much research in the past week that it's begun to all blur together. I 'settled' on so many different vapes, researched them further, changed my mind etc. The most recent one I settled on was the Fierce, but then I had doubts about that too

Basically my needs are as follows:

- I only smoke dry goods.

- The healthy aspect is very, very important to me. I want the purest airway/mouthpiece possible (glass wins there I guess?), and I want no chance of combustion obviously, because, well.. fuck combustion (does that rule out conduction vapes or nah?).

- I'm a pretty light user. Mostly smoking evenings, but every now and then (not often) all day.

- Relatively easy maintenance would be nice, but not essential. I won't mind looking after this thing if I am in love with it

- Quality flavor would be nice but again not super essential.. I'm used to joints so most vapes are probably an upgrade.

- Mostly at home. Would be nice to be able to take it out (beach, bar etc), but again, not essential.

- It would be REALLY nice to have the ability to pack a bowl, draw a few, then come back to it every now and then over a couple of hours. Is my only option for this particular requirement one of the custom made ones like Nomad/Milaana (do those even meet that requirement? From what I understand (not much), they do... but if so, does anything else?)​

Even though I'm a light smoker I want to purchase something high quality. I'm not interested in the MV1 (although I think the design is really cool. I just read too many negatives about it).

Welcome to FC, have a good time and much luck with finding the right Vape for you!

Many Options, in my own experience it is important to get a powerful and high quality Vape for starting as this helps to be really able to fuck combustion...
And without experience it should probably be one with temp control and not much possibility for user error, which rules out some nice but more manual options which are more for experienced Vapers.

If money is not a big issue, a Mighty or Minivap would be good Options for a high quality Vape with safe Materials, easy to use and practical for home use with occasional taking it out.

I concur regarding the MV1 and it seems the Fierce is also having some issues.
I really like my solo ll although it is not on demand.
The Nomad looks really awesome but personally I am partial to precise temperature control.
You seem to have a good knowledge base to make a informed decision.

I would look at a portable conduction or hybrid vape as your first vape. A lot of options for that. Can go with a crafty, haze Dual V3. Vapir Prima.

I think you should go with the Fierce. It's true they had to replace the preorder units. If portability had been on your checklist everybody would be shouting at you to get a Fury 2. The Fierce builds nicely from the success of the Fury 2 and has the same versatility with better flavor, a more convection/hybrid experience, improved battery life, USB C charging, and better integration of the glass accessories.

I gave my Solo II to a friend I liked the Fierce so much. When I got the Solo II it beat my Fury 2 for vapor quality and epic battery life and became my go to at home. I like the Fierce better in most every way though. Solo II still has better battery but the proprietary charger is annoying to keep track of.

I also own and love vapcaps but don't recommend them for you as a first purchase. The mouth pulling takes a bit to get used to and ultimately I'd want you to ditch the torch in favor of an induction heater, which doubles the cost. A VapCap is a lot of fun though for toasty conduction hits so get one later during a sale maybe.

If you're feeling cheap you could just get a Fury 2 with a coupon code for Healthy Rips or PuffItUp, but the battery life is weak as a trade-off for the delightfully pocketable size, which it doesn't sound like you need.

So yeah, lots of fun vapes to own as you're learning what works for you. I think a Fierce with the glass accessories bundle sets the bar really high for any future purchases. Plus it's so easy to get great, consistent results. Session portables have that going for them. I use the bent glass stem or wpa and remove it to save my hits for later. I prefer my Lil Bud for true on demand convection, but it has more of a learning curve, requires stirring, and uses batteries that are high maintenance. Ditto for the Splinter, Tubo, and other artisanal wood vapes.

Welcome to FC!!! Sounds like you’ve really been doing your homework!

If you really want a one-and-done vape (and expect to mostly vape alone) it sounds like a true convection vape is what you’re looking for. That knocks out all of the hybrids, though there are some great ones out there. And hybrids like the Fury2 are so easy to use and maintain.

If the grasshopper wasn’t going through growing pains, that would be my recommendation. I still love that vape. But you may want to take a closer look at the Ghost. And the Lil Bud Elite is almost here...

May I suggest the E-Nano from EpicVape? It checks most of your boxes and its an established design with a proven track record. Unless you are willing to go with butane or spend big bucks all glass is a problem. However finding a mostly glass air path is much easier which brings me mack to the E-Nano

Relatively easy maintenance would be nice, but not essential.

A quick alcohol shake or wipe cleans the glass stem and an occasional blow gets rid of crumbs is about all one needs for a log.

The E-Nano fails on this point, being a desktop.

No vape is perfect so you should be aware of the following. You can combust a load if you push the dial too high but its easy to avoid. The temperature is controlled by a rotary switch which is located on the cord and it can accidentally rotate to a new setting. A rubber band or a piece of tape is a quick fit. A small percentage of the wooden bodies will split but the manufacture will replace it for free in most cases. Good Luck

A couple to consider are the woodscent which has already been mentioned and tubo evic which is portable, easy to use, on demand or session and gives control over temp in F or C.

(All my vapes but one have been in storage for 4 months and the one I miss most is the tubo so I'm a bit obsessed about it. The one I've been using since others are in storage is the fury 2 which is also a good vape.)

I've always been eyeing both the Crafty and the Mighty whilst researching other vapes. They are both on the list without a doubt. I had not once come across the Minivap in my entire week of research, so I'm going to look it up right now.

I had actually decided on the grasshopper at one point.. it is pretty perfect and discreet. I did read about those growing pains though. If that is solved in the future it will be something I buy for sure.

Your narrowed list has 4 very similar vapes. If you will mostly be vaping alone, I think you should start with the Fury2. And my recommendation is mostly due to cost. Performance is similar across those 4, but a BIG difference in price.

I wonder if I'll ever buy a Mighty if only to be able to compare it to the assortment of vapes I have now. Mighty owners are really devoted and appreciate the vapor quality despite the plastic airpath with that uninspired mouthpiece. It's supposed to be annoying to clean so a lot of people use dosing capsules. The oven/chamber is on the larger side so folks use a concentrate pad to keep a half pack in place. Max temp is only 410°, which seems dumb in 2018. And I believe charging is a bit slow if I remember correctly?

It must be a winner since owners are so happy with the vapor despite all those quirks and the high price. I object on principle to S&B resting on their laurels with products that haven't improved in ten years. The "new" Mighty has improved battery life but it's not like they ever developed the Mighty 2.

The Healthy Rips vapes aren't perfect either. I agree with the post above that you should consider starting with a Fury 2 because it works so well and is so much cheaper than your other finalists.

If you get a Fury 2 my advice is to order from HR and opt for the free wpa (water pipe adapter) and also buy a bent glass stem. The glass serves three purposes: it improves the vapor quality, it makes microdosing more convenient by reducing the chamber size, and it allows for a bit of a cheat to your on demand preference because you can take the Fury 2 off the glass between hits. Sounds like maybe the Fury 2 and bubbler (a bong with a percolator) combo isn't ideal for you if you have to step outside to vape. You could use the wpa with a j-hook for added cooling. It's fun and makes you think of the Fury 2 less like a vape and more like a little heater you cap on whatever glass you're using.

For me the Fierce is the sweet spot for home use. I got the glass bundle and use the bent stem or wpa most often.

Moving on to your Tubo questions, yes the on demand portables are good for doing just one or two hits and saving the rest for later. Something to understand about the Tubo is that the draw resistance is extremely open. There's more risk of scorching and more need for stirring to get even extraction with the Tubo and other on demand convection devices too. There's also more of a learning curve and a greater likelihood to feel like you're getting too much heat in your throat when using it without water.

Comparing my own uses I'm tempted to recommend the Lil Bud again as your convection purchase that takes a month to receive. Owning both, I find that I almost always reach for the LB for convenient solo use. The Tubo (I have the Tubo X) is still good for sipping at lower temps but gets hot too easily at anything over 400°. I only use it at higher temps with a bubbler and then it's best for fully vaping a bowl in two massive, airy hits.

If you opt for a Fury/Fierce now and a LB later I'd recommend the basic cherry model, a longer glass-lined stem (Mike offers those now), and just the standard unregulated single button unit rather than the new model he's developing with a screen and settings like the Tubo has.

The beauty of the LB is its simplicity. Hold down the button and start your draw and the rest you learn by feel. With the glass lined stem I get huge flavorful clouds and a lovely convection high. Keeping the batteries fully charged is annoying but it's worth it.

Can I ask why you recommend the basic cherry model? Just for cost? Which option on the vapwood site is the glass lined stem?

As far as my 'regular' vape purchase, I have actually been gravitating towards the Fury 2, I feel like it is pretty perfect for my at home/sometimes-portable needs. I've read multiple people say that you can take a couple of hits and turn it off to save the rest for later.

However the only thing I don't like about it is the idea of the standard mouthpiece being plastic, and the way the glass stems attach. That's one thing that really drew me to the Fierce when I thought I had decided on that - the way they've designed the accessories for it is a big improvement. I'm a really big fan of the Fury/Fierce general design and the fact that the Fierce retains that when using the optional mouthpieces is excellent. I'm really keen to hopefully read some more impressions of the Fierce now that the replacements are going out... but I was also hoping to buy something really soon!

I don't think the glass lined stems are available on the vapwood site- yet. However, they are a thing in the works- to the Lil'Bud thread, there is discussion on them there. @Bravesst is also quite active and responsive via PM- Should you want to inquire about special ordering one.

I just want to add a differing opinion about the tubo- I used the setting that FJ had and didn't experience any learning curve. I have several of the wood vapes you mentioned considering- (all but the lil bud) and the advantage of the tubo is the degree of control you have including being able to choose between session and demand mode.
