Log Vapes: Making edibles using the vaporizer's own heat?

For owners of MyrtleZaps, Purple Days, or Woodeez Vaporizers:

Bought some olive oil and had some duff that I wanted to make edibles out of. I took the glass jar that was holding the duff and simply placed it over the vape after submerging it contents in oil.

It will stay there for a while. I don't want any bacterial infections so it will stay on the vape for no more than two days.

I don't have access to proper cooking sources (I live in a dorm), so this will have to do. Any opinions? Do you think that this is a bad idea? Too hot?

I've always had the best luck in a double boiler, so you can pick up a cheap digital cooking thermometer (like $15) and as long as you're not exceeding 100 C it should be fine. When I've made edibles I've also only ever simmered for about 30-45 min with great results at about 0.25 g per person.

I am pretty sure this is in the wrong section. ;)
Yeah, I didn't know if it fit here as a "tip" for specific vaporizers or in the "ask questions" section...

Modnote: Moved. Being that this is a question thread and not a Vaporizer thread it belongs in Ask FC, not Vaporizer Discussion. :)

Get a crappy little crock pot from walmart, prolly $10 or $15, put it in at lunch, take it out at dinner, works for me, but make sure you take the occasional temp to be safe. Or use everclear to make swamp water/green dragon, no heat needed.

So for how long should I leave it on? The jar is hot to the touch, too hot to hold comfortably. Would I be risking anything before two days on the vape? Do you think that any bacteria will grow in it?

Do you have a microwave in your dorm room? Make Leary biscuits with cheese and crackers.

I think my method is a lot more efficient. I will let it sit for at least a weak with continual heat for 2-3 days. This leaves a lot of time for the actives to bond properly to the lipids. As the duff is already decarboxylated, there is not much need for higher temperatures.

I am still paranoid about bacteria growing inside of it... although the jar is too hot to hold (perhaps hot enough to kill bacteria?). I don't know. I will report back my experience after a few more days.

Won't you be cooking with it anyway when your done? (higher heat which should kill anything)

I don't think you will have any problem with bacteria. In fact olive oil contains oleuropein, which is anaturally occuring anti-bacterial compound that inhibits certain bacteria growth.

Nope, I'll just drink the oil or put it in a soup.

I wouldnt leave my vaporizer on for any prolonged duration. That would probably cut down the life of your heating element, and not to mention its a potential fire hazard. Get a hot plate or something like that instead, and you shouldnt leave one of those on unattended either. :2c:

lol.......seems like I'm disagreeing with you at ever turn here.

These types of vapes are designed to stay on 24/7 and after the hundreds, if not thousands of them being sold, there is not one report of any issues. I leave mine on 24/7 and have done so for over a year. I don't believe that there is any more danger in leaving these types of vapes on than there would be in leaving a light bulb on, or leaving your modem on.

As far as cutting down the life of the heating element, I contend that a fluctuating temp of it being constantly heated up and then cooled down puts much more of a strain on it than a constant temp of it being on all the time.

Honestly, (I dont know if this holds true for vaporizers) but I have ruined soddering irons by leaving them on for really prolonged durations. I left one on for a week once (still sitting in its cradle) and by the time I realized (the next time I needed to use it) it was dead.

Well I wouldn't leave my soldering iron or a VHW on 24/7 but the PD.... Yes sir! 24/7 - on for many months, ready anytime.

:o

I ate about half of my oil yesterday on a sailing trip with a friend (he got the other half). It was his first time, so normally, he didn't feel anything.

Me on the other hand... I was the highest I have ever been! This method works great, and I recommend it for everyone! It is much easier to use than conventional heating methods because it allows you to cook the duff for days with no worries, with optimal results!

Smell while cooking? The smell was completely nonexistent. I used a closed jar and placed the vaporizer/jar in a closed drawer. Even when the jar was opened, you could only smell the oil if your nose was right above it.

This is a very discrete method to cook the oil.

I just ingested oil made using this method. 2g of ABV from my PD were soaked in a generous amount of olive oil for 36 hours (It was on heat for only 12 hours). I have a feeling that the majority of THC that binds to the lipids in the olive oil occurs in the first 12 hours. After that, heat and time get you the last XX%. So it'll be interesting to find out of this is true.

I ingested an amount roughly equivalent to 0.5g vaped bud.

I mixed the oil with milk and shook it up (emulsifier). I didn't filter the plant matter out, so I almost threw up a couple times. I'm able to chug olive oil, but the plant matter makes it quite difficult for me.

I'll update on the results.

Drinking lots of olive oil sounds nasty.

Just make some butter, brownies, or Leary biscuits instead. Someone on this site claims that eating duff with nuts works too.

I know you're in a college dorm so you don't really have many options for baking things aside from the vape and jar and maybe a microwave but I'd just vape and save the duff until you have access to an oven and stove, unless you have friends that live in an apt with an oven and stove.

Yes yes.
Drinking 1/2g worth of ABV/olive oil brought me just above baseline.
I probably need around 1g worth. I have not tested it yet though.
