The Agile line is considered a good value Korean knockoff Les Paul. Not cheap but not the real deal either.

Another factor/expense to consider is having the guitar setup/checked by a local Luthier. New or used.

thanks for that! the squier was coming from a guitar center so i assumed it was up to snuff.
am trying to save a few dollars and i need a lefty, which is why i posted those ads.
it's gonna be one of those for sure. i just cancelled the squier order. while it would allow me to play the RB3 tracks AND rocksmith, while i'll only be able to play rocksmith with the new lefty, the main reason was the expense/value of the guitar. from what i've read the squier perfoms at about the level of a $100 guitar. so if i'm gonna use a $100 guitar, i'd rather pay that much, and have it be lefty. $250 total for guitar and MIDI controller with RB3, $100-$115 total for a lefty guitar and the new game/ cord.

returned the squier b4 they could ship it.

Thank goodness dude. I didn't want to say anything, but those squiers are crap. You may find a good one if you go and play every one in the store. But, mainly they never hold a tune and sound like crap.

have started using the justinguitar.com while impatiently waiting for my rocksmith to get here. (have just gotten to playing the first chord 'D'). thanks again to @deadheadbill for the info!

a couple things about the guitar. it seems great other than a few small details.
1 - i am pretty sure my top fat (e?) string is sprung due to....
2 - so this thing is so new it still has the plastic coating on the scratchplate and pickups. well the first two closest to the neck, anyway. the third is free of the wrapping, but when you tighten the side closest to the fat (e?), it will raise instead of tighten. if you loosen it, it floats.

in addition, the story i got on this was the guy basically inherited it from a friend who tried to learn, didn't do well, gave up and just gave it to the guy i bought it from. sat there 'til i got it. also, as i said the fat (e?) is sprung, but if i tighten down the pickup it stretches into the string, giving it enough tension and is then closer in being in tune. if i unscrew it and let it float, and then back off the tuning (pin?) it becomes too slack to ring true.

is this something i can fix myself (not the string the pickup) or should i take it to a luthiers?

EDiT - i see i missed the conclusion of thought here. so, SINCE the pickup is free of wrapper, it wasn't used much, and it operates funky, my guess is the guy tried to take the pickup out all the way to get it free of the plastic, re-installed it wrong. gave up. now i have a halfway decent guitar for cheap that needs a little work.

previous owner obviously fucked w/ the pickup while removing the plastic wrapper.
when re-installing somehow it was done in such a way that tightening the screw does what it is supposed to, lower the pickup, but only on the bottom (thin string) side.
when i tighten the top screw (fat side) it actually RAISES the pickup, instead.

i believe that the previous owner (who never learned or messed w/ it after that, i think) left it that way, and instead of letting it 'float' loose on the one side, screwed it down hard, allowing it to cut into the string, where i believed it was later tuned in to.

i screwed the one side down all the way so that the whole thing was low enough to stay off the string when tightened (so it's still at the extreme angle, just all the way low) as a temporary measure. i have new strings (and strap-locks) and i should be getting a tuner from a friend tomorrow so when i restring it i'll try to fix the pickup.

i am assuming that there is a washer or something that is hopefully inserted backwards (and not missing) that is causing this. does anyone know about pickup engineering to help me?

nice! yea i have already hurt my fret fingers from trying to do to much too fast (had the same problem w/ rockband (RB) and guitar hero (GH). i actually use my all purpose salve that i used on my burns to lessen the pain. just had a friend suggest super glue as a buffer, until my fingers get less sensitive. (i already have very soft and sensitive girly hands to start with. seriously almost cried when i picked it up this morning after all the messing around the night before.) i used to use the salve for the muscle soreness in my forearm from all the fingering. i am gonna try some skin glue i am lucky enough to have and see how well that works. this is gonna be great for my patience as i really want to learn.

it'll be good to have someone else that little bit ahead of me on this journey!

very hard to stay as i like a wide range of rock/pop.

tool, nin, and pink floyd are my 'desert island' bands,

but that doesnt mean that they will be fun to play as i'm learning.

i am def. from early 90's grunge/hard rock era.
toadies, gashuffer, sunny day real estate, 7 year bitch, etc.

but i also love my industrial, kmfdm (pig/pigface), front 242, ministry, coil. not so much skinny puppy. wumpscut is 50/50, some i love, some is a little too distorted.
just to give you a base range.

i also love the range of psychedelia
you can search my posts in the cool music thread to get broader idea of the more eclectic stuff i post. (other than the ton of maynard and trent, of which there is a bit)

I've played guitar since 8th grade off and on, and what I've found in my case is that I get pretty bored doing lessons and doing chords or playing the pentatonic scale, etc. All those lessons kind of bored me and inhibited a lot of progress in my case because I never got excited to go do a guitar lesson.

This is me personally, and if you can find lessons that you find fun then that's very valuable.

I typically just like to learn songs or chunks of songs by ear; that in itself teaches you a lot. You are decoding an artist's creativity and putting it in an arsenal in your brain. Your brain will later access that arsenal for inspiration when it's time to make up material.

I don't think there are many if any good musicians who didn't learn and cover songs they were inspired by. It's a great way to learn because it's fun and you are developing your technique and style based on the sort of music you like.

Get something like "Transcribe" (google it if interested; I'm typing on my phone) - - get something that allows you to slow down the music and play back certain parts. Find the notes on the guitar and practice. You are a detective who is trying to match the notes you hear to yours on your guitar.

Then later on when you have notes in your mind of how you want something to sound, it comes very naturally to move it to the guitar.

Also, make your own scales. To me they're just a series of ascending/descending notes that go well together. Then you can make chords or a riff or solo from them.

Edit - - Since you like Tool, try learning that catchy opening riff in the song Undertow by ear. It's all on 1 string (d string) and involves lots of sliding and is a fun beginner riff.

i want to practice so much, but my tips are not happy yet. even w/ the glue, the tissue underneath is still too bruised to play for more than a few strums.

Is it possible to post a picture of the guitar? Or even better, a pic of how the pickups are attached.


There are different ways the screws can adjust the pickups.

If the pickups are direct mount (screwed right into the body of the guitar), the pickups lower as you tighten the screws. This is because the screw and the pickup move down closer to the body as you tighten it.

Direct mount:

If the pickups are mounted on a pickguard (plastic piece like on a fender strat) or in a pickup ring, the pickups raise as you tighten the screws. This is because the screw is held in place by the pickup ring or pickguard, so when the screw is tightened the pickup moves upward toward the screwhead.

I just can't figure out how one side acts differently than the other unless one screw is into the baseplate and the other isn't. But it is impossible to tell without seeing it.

Here is a picture of a humbucker pickup (out of a guitar) that shows the screws in the baseplate:

If the screws are going into the baseplate, they ought to work the same on both sides of the pickup. There is no washer that can be inserted upside down. It is possible that on one side the screw is not threading into the baseplate, but just pressing down on the baseplate so it lowers the pickup instead of raising it (if you have a pickup ring or pickguard).

Sorry if that doesn't help much. I know I could have you up and running in minutes if the guitar were in my hands. Some pictures would help if it's possible. I know I can figure this out with a bit more info.


One general suggestion I have for learning guitar is www.songsterr.com

It is a site that you can put in the name of a song and it will show you how to play it note for note in real time in tab form. So it tells you exactly what notes to play on the guitar to play your favorite tunes. Makes learning a lot more fun than just playing the same chords over & over...

Ok, if you have a pickguard then tightening the screws (turning to the right) should raise the pickups. So it sounds like yours is working correctly on the top E (fat string) but not the bottom E (thin string).

Unfortunately pickguards are a bit of a pain to take off. But if you unscrew all the small screws around the edges of the pickguard then take the strings off (or loosen them up a lot on some guitars), the whole pickguard comes off the guitar in one piece with all the electronics attached.

Don't pull too hard because there will be wires attached to the guitar still. But you should be able to get the pickguard off the guitar enough to flip it over and look at the underside. Make sure that all the pickup screws thread through the tabs on the pickups. My first guess is that they aren't all doing so.

Self taught, mostly downloaded chord/lyric charts online and tired a few random instruction vids to help me a long. I lean in the classic rock x bluegrass flavor (jamgrass) myself, and had to find other people to play with to really start learning. All I can say for starting out is stay patient as possible, try to have fun with it. I gave myself a 5 year goal to be halfway decent, meaning I could at least flub my way through a camp fire pick... and I was able to move much further than that having recorded a CD and had many stage performances as (Moonshine Summit) we're on myspace and FB if'n you are interested in checking it out.

so i took the WHOLE thing apart, i mean almost every screw. i unscrewed the front, the back, all the pickups, and all the strings.

the problem was

the exact opposite of this. (correct on bottom/thin, loose on top/fat)

it was due to the top screw having been backed out so far that the spring had dislodged. then re-tightened w/out spring in place. took all the pickups out, took the plastic off the other two, re-installed. i am pretty sure they are the same direction as before, however i am worried that the neck-end pickup might have gotten reversed. does that matter?

also we broke the 'A' string when re-stringing it. i assume that is due to the super light strings i got. gonna have to get more tomorrow. should i just get amazon shipping me a pack every month? that said, the rest of them are really nice on my fingers.

still messing w/ it, practicing my 'D', 'E', and 'A' chords (shiver) without it.

i found a decent fender 30 dsp amp for $60 but the damn ad maker won't leave contact info and doesn't have an auto-reply email attached to the ad, either.

have been sending them notices about it all day. so what do i find when i check it an hour ago? they've dropped the price 10 bucks, but still NO INFO. the did mark the intersection that the are at and i'm half tempted to go stand there tomorrow shouting, "FENDER AMP WANTED!" over and over 'til the come out.

really wish i had rushed the shipping on the rocksmith!


@jambandphan03 , i really am giving myself a lot of room and patience to learn, but i am also very excited and want to play all the time. i am giving myself a year to do the same thing (be able to strum a few songs by campfire). if i don't i won't be down on myself, but i feel there damn well better be a good reason why! lol.

I hate to derail. BUT VERY NICE JAM!! I love jamgrass. Greensky Bluegrass is one of my faves. I've been able to hang out with them many times. Great bunch of guys. We have a campsite called Hopryland in which we bring a keg trailer with about 30 kegs and 5 taps on each side for Magfest and Springfest each year so all the bands jam at our sites till the wee hours exery night.

What gauge strings did you get? It's always good to have extras around in case you break one, but you may not want to order too many until you know what gauge (and brand) you like playing. As you move along you may find different gauges feel and sound better to you. When starting out, the thinner the strings, the easier on your fingers.

How often to change strings is a preference thing. Some people play until one breaks. Some people (like myself) like the sound & feel of newer strings so therefore change them regularly before they get too old. Some people don't care much, and change whenever. There is no right answer.

i went super light on the strings as i have baby hands as previously mentioned, .009-.042. my well dabbed buddy was doing the tuning, but the trade-off was he helped me get the pick-up situated. worth the 5-6 bucks for strings at the local shop. my wifeys warlock needs strings as well anyway so....

I got to play guitar with Billy once, in '04 after he played a valentines gig in Ned. I only really knew how to play Blackberry Blossom at the time... wish I could do it all over now that I can really play

rocksmith showed up on tues. have been hooked since.
having a hard time keeping up w/ my justinguitar.com lessons.
just got to level 3 'local support act'
have unlocked over half the guitarcade stuff. am loving that for exercises.
definitely have played multiple hours everyday.
i like to start by doing a round or two of every arcarde game, then onto practicing for the current event. if i feel shaky on a song pre-event i'll practice a few times in the 'songs' heading, but mostly i'm just going for it. i have to pause often between riff changes.

it was nice to see my jg (justinguitar from now on) work pay off in the chord challenge.

found my guitar online. normal righty can be found for $120. not surprised, mostly due to this things heft. a lot of weight for it's size i feel (but what do i know). found the fender version on ebay for $250. i am glad this is my first axe tho. it does hold it's tune well all day. i did even out the bridge when i re-strung her, not sure if that was a good or bad idea, but my ocd kicked in when i had all of them off. (i know, no a good thing in general, but remember i had to remove the entire pickguard.) either way she seems to be playing fine. i am glad for the rocksmith's evening out of sound while i get used to how easy an electric will make noise. so glad i went this way instead of getting that squire.

don't need the amp much now, but for $50 in brand new condition (still in box) it was worth it for the future. it also has two inputs so me and wifey can rock out at the same time (separate foot switch input).

actually had a dream that i was talking to slash about band fuse, lol.
wondering what kind of cheap MIDI drum kit i could get for the wifey that would be good with that.

i do feel that the constant auto difficulty on rocksmith (RS) is a bit nerve racking. as soon as i feel like i'm starting to get the hang of it, it gets harder and my barely made progress falls apart for awhile as i get flustered. am hoping there is some setting that i am missing or that it's corrected in the next version. i know that you can go all the way to full difficulty on the new one.
i got the first as i am impatient, but also so i could have the full music library.

i know 8 chords, lol! so the new Rocksmith looks like they solved all the issues with the first version, i.e. difficulty settings, menus, load times. gonna post a link of a review with some videos. brendan small makes an appearance (personal hero!). i am spending more time on the guitarcade than anything as i want to build a good foundation before really trying to learn songs. i grabbed the pre-order w/ another cord so me and the wifey can play together. she can either use one of the acoustics (removable pickup) or her B.C Rich Warlock (that's right, my wife plays a warlock. don't hear that too often, do ya )

the guitarcade and session sets look very impressive as well as difficulty control everywhere!

also picked up 'learn and master guitar w/ Steve Krenz'. switched to that from justinguitar do to not having the tablature for the practice songs. i like the fingering exercises he has you doing right off the bat with the chord practicing. started that last night.

don't have calluses yet, but i do have that numbness beginning. i have one small blister, but it is deep and healing it seems. i am so happy that technology and oppurtunity and desire are all meeting at the same time.

I took half hour lessons 1x a week for 4 years. I never got good because I never practiced.

I played rocksmith for about a month, after a few years of not picking up a guitar, and felt like I got more out of it than I did years of lessons. IMO making it a game like that with numerical values encourages you to keep practicing. "oh I got 72% last time, now I got 78%!" vs "I still can't play it right".

Just easier to see the progression. I have a few guitars around (I collected more than I played) and I keep meaning to get back into rocksmith.


The good news is that they are relasing 2014 version of rocksmith this month. Bad news for PC users is that it uses Uplay DRM, which means I'll likely have to pirate it I want to support it like I did the first game, but UPLAY has deleted games from my account that I paid for before, and customer service simply didn't believe me. That's fine, but don't expect me to ever pay for one again lol.


Anyway rocksmith is AMAZING imo. If you like video games at all, and/or guitar at all, you really need it. Possibly the most productive game since fat fat people used DDR to lose weight.


Oh and I sold this guitar unfortunately. I made $300 to hold on to it for a couple of years, but I still wish I never sold it, because I can never justify spending that much to replace it. Oh and it was one of 200 or 300 total made The DMM1 signature guitar for Daron from System Of A Down. Paintings done by his dad too. Didn't play like $1k, but it sure made up for that with looks. It was a sweet guitar. Ended up shipping it to australia. I keep telling myself if I ever get really good I can reward myself with that gibson SG gothic edition I wanted the whole time I was taking lessons as a kid.

Bob don't bother with an amp. I was so surprised at how good the amp settings and emulation was with rocksmith! I don't think I'd bother getting an amp at this point unless I was going to be playing gigs or something.

Got a TV/PC with rocksmith? Its like you've got a hundred amps in one. Is it as good as a $2k tube amp? Nope. Is it better than spending $2k on a tube amp and still sounding 90% like it...yes IMO.

Bob don't bother with an amp. I was so surprised at how good the amp settings and emulation was with rocksmith! I don't think I'd bother getting an amp at this point unless I was going to be playing gigs or something.

Got a TV/PC with rocksmith? Its like you've got a hundred amps in one. Is it as good as a $2k tube amp? Nope. Is it better than spending $2k on a tube amp and still sounding 90% like it...yes IMO.

too late! lol, but it's ok for $50 a almost new in box fender 30 dsp is a steal. and i can practice w/ my headphones when i am not on the game. i do love the different guitars/pedals/amps, etc. that you can 'play' within the game. it's like having a friend who manages a shop that let's you come in and try everything. will definitely help me make better decisions when actually buyin' quality gear!


EDiT - p.s. that guitar looks sweeeet. i love System of a Down. even their solo stuff. i bet that was hard to let go of.
